What do you do when the Zombie craze takes over your town? Celebrate of course! It was a great week-end for Cynthiana! Here are a few photos of their event which brought people in from all over the country. The creators of this popular show are from Cynthiana and have be great in giving back to their hometown.

What was to be a sign unveiling created a com-munity wide celebration. In addition to helping with this event they also purchased a digital projector for the Rohs theatre.

KHC Site Identification Mgr. and daughter Claire

and I served as judges for the window contest. MS

director, Stephanie Burden took notes.

Dentists, lawyers, and even churches got

in to the spirit with displays at their loca-

tions and the Cloth Peddler even had

Walking Dead fabric for sale!

One local merchant created Zombie dolls for her

window display and then sold them.

You will want to print this page and share with others. (full size page is the last page of MSM) These are the KHC tax credit numbers over the last 11 years. These credits can help revitalize your downtown Main Street community. There will be several opportunities to learn more about tax credits, how they work, and how they can help your community at the fall conference. There will be a session for the public so those of you in the area be sure to invite building owners, realtors, homeowners, and others. More information, agenda, etc. will be in the August 15th edition of MSM

Are your businesses capitalizing on Pokémon??

This is Cynthiana director, Stephanie Burden’s first design project. What a big difference it made to the entrance to the parking lot! They are waiting for their sign (you can see the pole) and the garden inside makes for a much friendlier pedestrian experience.

While visiting Holland, MI, a former GAMSA

winner, recently I took some photos that could be

implemented in many of our communities. (I

don’t ever stop thinking of Main St) Let me know

if you try any of these :)

Signage at a local restaurant Seating and planting bays

Plaque downtown about their energy

efficiency in their streetlights.

Who takes photos of trash cans? MS folks

of course! The handles created on the

cans makes it much easier for public

works to remove them to empty contents.

Something simple that could make their

job much easier.

Lots of public art, lots of trees, a

very inviting downtown. One street

which I think may have been their

art district had banners of famous

artwork recreated by artists that

were hung over 2 city blocks while

others showed they were bike

This piece was interesting, it was

part floral and part public art.

Wayfinding, and bollards to protect

the curbs. You can also see a brick

crosswalk to the right that matches

their brick sidewalks.

Street view after the rain.

It’s a busy place.

Flowers and seating are everywhere along the Main Street corridor and other locations.

In Saugatuck, MI which

is a much smaller like

many of your communi-

ties, a local restaurant

used a system made from

gutters to grow their

herbs and create a street

garden. A pallet garden

was also located nearby.

An interesting bicycle

planter. I had not seen

pots actually attached

to the bike in this way

before.

This empty corner lot in

Saugatuck was turned into a

wonderful garden space

that attracted many people

walking by on the street. All

of these photos were taken

in about two minutes and

you can see the foot traffic

it receives. It also had some

beautiful sculptures and lots

of flowers along with a few

benches.

I took these photos so that

you could see the context of

its location within the

downtown.

This small community is located on the water and they too have a lot of trees and places to sit and rest or sleep in this case :) These chairs could easily be made out of pallets and painted.

What to do with that empty lot ??
