As for the lack of a chart consensus on “Homeboy,” Dungan says, “The major Cumulus stations are still not on this record. We’re still selling in Indy (WFMS) and Dallas (KPLX), but not nearly at the ratio we’re experiencing in other areas.” Cumulus’ SVP/Programming Jan Jeffries tells Country Aircheck the song is “getting airplay in nights on Cody Alan’s show on all Cumulus stations. The Eli Young Band’s Mike Eli, Jon Jones, Chris Thompson and James Young give an industry spin on the artist interview:What station did you grow up listening to? ME: KILT/Houston. JY: The only time I ever won anything in my life was from KHYI/Dallas. It was a large pizza or something. We grew up listening to the

radio and rigged a cassette player to make my own mix tapes. Has your radio tour taken you to a part of the country that has blown you away? ME: I love Seattle. It’s beautiful in springtime. We were in Three Forks, MT not too long ago. Down in Texas, we really don’t have mountains, so anytime we go anywhere that has these huge majestic mountains is pretty amazing. What is your go-to food stop? JY: Whataburger is our guilty pleasure; especially if we’ve been out of Texas for awhile and can’t find one. ME: We are absolutely crazy about Indian food. Before we even get to a town, we know exactly where the nearest Indian food place is. We only eat it on the road because our wives don’t like it. So when we’re out, we treat ourselves. What nasty truck stop food tempts you? CT: I tried a Tijuana Mama one time. Those are the hot pickled sausages. Why do they make that? Which regional is the worst driver? JJ: As easy as it is to call all our regionals out for their sketchy driving, I feel bad because we’re just playing on our iPhones in the back of the van doing nothing. Meanwhile, they’re driving, making calls, figuring out directions. We don’t want to hurt their feelings but one of our regionals is terrible at handling big rides and we’re a band; we can’t fit in small cars.Who’s the best road companion? ME: Jon is definitely the best front-seat driver because he’s really good at navigating and always has his eye out for the nearest Indian restaurant. James is the music guy. His iPod has got more music than all of ours combined. Who have you seen live lately that you’ve tried to emulate or borrow ideas from for your performances? ME: Jack Ingram. I’m a huge fan of his music. I’ve pulled and stolen more from his show than anyone else. What question do you never want to answer again? ME: Which regional is the worst driver?

Benken discusses his most influential songs, albums and concerts:1. Randy Travis, Old 8x10: It was my first country album. I wore out the cassette. Go back and listen if you haven’t in awhile because it’s an amazing piece of work.2. Nikka Costa, Exit/In, Nashville: I’ve seen her twice there, and she’s only the most energetic, creative, funky, talented, fun artist I have ever seen. I would pay

nearly any amount of money to go to her shows.3. Muse: Pick any album or show. Everything they do is different than anyone else. They’re talented musicians that just blow me away.4. Garth Brooks, Atlanta, 1995: Tom Baldrica took me to this show. I was a promotion coordinator at BNA at the time. It was country music packaged as a rock show. Why didn’t anyone think of this sooner?5. Van Halen/Scorpions/Dokken/Metallica/Kingdom Come, Hoosier Dome, 1987: My ears are still ringing, and the sight of 15k people losing their minds is still vivid.• A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: I tend to listen to a ton of music from all genres from Pat Benatar to Eddie “The Chief” Clearwater to Kate Bush to Juanita Sue Leonard. I’ve tried about everything, I think.• An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: The Beatles. Good music? Yes. Ground-breaking and innovative? Not in my book. I just think they were solid, but “I Want To Hold Your Hand” didn’t really change my world.• An album you played or listened to incessantly: Nikka Costa Everybody Got Their Somethin’. See above.• One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: “I’ll Stand By You” by Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders. It’s just raw! Same with “Angry All The Time” by Kelly Willis and Bruce Robison.

RCA VP/Promotion Keith Gale: “John Hart, the PD when I was at WXTU/Philadelphia, elevated me to Promotion Director shortly after his arrival. Warner Music Nashville Creates New Movement with ‘Drifters’; Encourages Fans to “Give Blood” Fortheoff-the-cuffheartland,countrysoundthatembodiesthehot new group The Dirt Drifters, staying in a proverbial artistry “box” isn’t exactly what they’re looking for. And their label agrees. “As we all know the model for the modern day record company and how we break artists is changing,” said Chris Stacey, Warner Music Nashville’s Sr. VP of Promotion. “The Dirt Drifters perfectlyexemplifiesthis.Ourstrategycertainlyinvolvesradio, but we are also heavily investing in their touring, merchandise sales and online strategies as a major part of our game plan.” This new approach is certainly not conventional, but it is just the sort of strategic creativity that the staff at Warner Music Nashville embraces. This platform for new artist development gives fans an opportunity to truly know The Dirt Drifters and lets the band do what they love the most – play their music. Among the many eclectic steps in The Dirt Drifters’ marketing plan of branding, touring and radio is one in particular that strays from the normalcy of the industry – giving away their entire album, This is My Blood, for free. The unique physical copy of the album is a dual package that allows fans to keep a copy of the album, tear off the bonus album and pass along to a friend. This virtually unheard of tactic in the label world proves that The Dirt Drifters music can truly speak for itself and they are ready to make some noise. “Even though the plan for The Dirt Drifters is to seed the marketplace with free copiesofthisterrificalbum, and much of

the company’s focus is on touring, we greatly value our radio partners and their support of this music,” said Bob Reeves, Warner Music Nashville VP of Promotion. “In fact, the tour targetsspecificmarketswithradiostationsthatcouldimpactthissinglesignificantly.Thatmakesitdifferentfromyourtypicaltop ten, 40 week, land grab single. We’re focusing on reaching an audience one market at a time.” And the excitement behind the group with their unparalleled energy is a formula that cannot be beat. “I had the opportunity to see The Dirt Drifters two days in a rowincompletelydifferentsettings;AClubandaFestival.Inboth cases they were just simply great. The live performance, coupled with the great sounding ‘Always a Reason’ on the air makes it a home run,” said Nate Deaton, GM KRTY/San Jose With exciting momentum on a road not often traveled, The Dirt Drifters offer a fresh, raw blend of music that gives country music fans the sound they have been craving for. We’re all ears.
