COURTENAY — The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

For Bruce Gordon, a circumnavigation of the globe began with the fi rst push of a pedal on his Bacchetta recumbent bike.

The former Comox Valley resident is on a solo trip around the world with a two-fold purpose: to beat the Guinness world record for fastest unsupported global circumnavigation by bicycle and to raise funds for World Vision.

Taking some major time off from his job as a roofer in Sechelt, Gordon has had many adventures, the most recent in celebrating his 49th birthday on July 23 as he peddled through the sweltering heat that has hit the east coast of North

America.“Right now the

biggest challenge has been the heat,” Gordon said in an e-mail sent from a recent stop that had WiFi access. “This morning, 10 a.m, as I rode through Greenwich (in New York), the temp was 97F. Not sure what it was at noon but I can tell you, it was smokin’ hot. The breeze felt like it was coming from an oven.

“As I am set to travel south as far as Fort Myers (Florida), then turn towards the Canadian Prairies, then turning back towards Yuma before turning towards home, I best not be complaining about the heat,” he said.

Gordon’s remarkable journey began April 8 from the driveway of his Halfmoon Bay home (just north of Sechelt

on the Sunshine Coast). That’s also the fi nish line, but he says nailing down the day the trip will end is tough.

“Somewhere around the end of August. I will know better as I get closer.”

While enjoying spectacular scenery in locales such as Italy, Spain, Greece, and Australia, Gordon also has an eye on the clock as he attempts to get into the Guinness Book of World Records.

“The current record is held by Vin Cox of the U.K.,” Gordon said. “He completed the circumnavigation (29,331 kilometres) according to the Guinness rules in 163.5 days — an average of 177 kilometres per day. My average has slipped some since arriving back in America.

“Still, I’m sitting at

about 185 kpd. I hope to fi nish with at least a 200 kpd average. That means I’ve got some work to do.”

Gordon says the number of hours a day he spends on the road varies.

“If I were to fi gure out the average, I’d guess it would be around eight hours of actual ride time, not including the breaks for lunch, etc. Many days have been over 12 hours actual ride time, some have only amounted to fi ve or six.”

Gordon says he has not suffered the loneliness of a long-distance solo cyclist.

“I thought it was going to be a lonely adventure but it hasn’t been. I meet lots of folks who want to gab. Lots of people interested in the bike, then the adventure. And I keep in touch

Recumbent journey

Former Comox Valley resident Bruce Gordon has begun his solo round-the-world journey on his recumbent bicyle. His goal is to to beat the Guinness world record for fastest unsupported global circumnavigation by bicycle and to raise funds for World Vision.

with a growing numberof friends throughsocial media – Twitter, Facebook, TMT, e-mail, etc.”

Speaking of social media, all the details of Gordon’s tour are on his website at www.globebent.org. There is a link to donate to World Vision, and a regularly updated blog that is well worth the

read – especially thetale of his run-in witha Mad Max-type big rigtrucker in Australia.

The tour has its challenges and highlights, Gordon said.

“Major challenges change from day to day. Sometimes it’s the headwinds, or the rain. Sometimes it’s simply the terrain. If it’s hilly for days on

end, it really wears youdown. Sometimes it’s just getting up in themorning when what you really want to do is sleep ... but then, everybody has that challenge.

“Highlights? There have been many ... making it back to the spot I cruised into when returning to America by cruiseship. The Cunard pier in NY Harbour. I fl ew from there to St. John’s, Nfl d. to begin the America leg of my ride on Canada Day.

“The last day in Australia was both the toughest of them all

— for a lot of reasons— and the mostmemorable. It reallytested me, that one did. So many evenings riding into the sunset, then after dark, as the desert came alive with the night sounds. East coast New Zealand with its huge waves crashing the shoreline, seals by the hundreds, surfers.

“The day I creeped over the record holder’s daily average. Meeting other cyclists travelling the world. The kangaroos. The open vastness of Australia. Barcelona. Food ... sometimes a

big meal at the end ofa tough day is a hugememorable highlight.People’s kindness and generosity. The crazy rain and awesome lightning show in Macedonia. One very windy day in Italy. There’s plenty more,” Gordon said.

Gordon’s proud mom Audrey Fallock, who lives in the Valley, encourages people to visit her son’s website and help him meet his goal of raising $16,250 for Zambia’s poverty-stricken children.

“Let him know you are rooting for him,” Fallock said.

COURTENAY — A 55-pound chocolate Easter egg was recently on display in the Hot Chocolates store.

Veronica Hastings, a Grade 4 student at Valley View Elementary School whose mother works at the store, mentioned to Hot Chocolates owner Jorden Marshall how she would love to be able to share this egg with her classmates.

Marshall liked Hastings’ message of sharing and decided to donate the egg to Valley View School.

In keeping with the spirit of sharing, kindness and generosity, each of the 17 divisions at Valley View “hatched” a plan

of how they could “pay it forward” and give back to others.

Marshall donated an additional 33 pounds of chocolate to the school, and the 88 pounds of chocolate were divided evenly amongst all of the classes.

Each class chose to use its fi ve pounds of chocolate in different ways.

Many classes baked with it and raised money for various organizations through bake sales, while others donated the chocolate itself.

At the end of this process, Valley View students raised $102 for the popular Comox Valley charity You Are Not Alone (YANA); $196.80 for the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life; $43.88 for the SPCA

and $145 for Ronald McDonald House.

Marshmallow chocolate cups were also presented to the nurses at St. Joseph’s General Hospital, peanut clusters were made for Father’s Day gifts, chocolate cookies were donated to the Comox Valley Food Bank, and chocolate was given to the fi refi ghters at the Comox Fire Hall and elders at the Big House.

Several classes also chose to share their chocolate with their

10 MidWeek / August 3, 2011

Whether it be for fun, profi t or a deeply held compulsion, people collect things.

Perhaps it is in our genes, something that goes back to the early ‘hunter gatherer’ days. With the advent of TV shows and the Internet the collecting of ‘things’ has perhaps never been more prevalent.

As children, many of us collected things such as stamps, toy cars, dolls, and even insects. The collector phase was usually short lived and was a part of us learning about the world around us. For some the collecting bug stayed with us into adulthood or spawned some kind of scientifi c interest which later led to a career. But now, boy oh boy, it seems to have gotten totally out of hand.

Of course if one is an actual ‘collector’ there is no shortage of stuff out there for you. As if the bloomin’ Beanie Baby craze was not enough, I even know of a collector’s club for lovers of strands of barbed-wire fencing.

Then there are those people who collect: beer tins (usually empty), cigar bands, cigarette packages, beer mats (coasters), match books, champaign corks, pottery frogs, bus tickets, John Deer ball caps, pre-paid telephone cards, expired credit and bank cards – the list is seemingly endless. For many of these collectors I paraphrase the lady on the TV commercial for a bowel moving medicine wherein she says, “and they’re what I like to call: wrong!”

Collecting has long been something of a craze, but why the emphasis on collectibles in the fi rst place? Have you ever noticed that many antique stores and

antique-type events seem to add the tag “and Collectibles”? It’s become common to see print ads for such things as an Antique and Collectibles Show or Coins & Collectibles.

One would think that antiques in themselves are collectibles so why

the need for the tag? Well, and I know that many dealers will be up in arms about this, the “and Collectibles” thing evolved for many reasons.

Under old legislation,

particularly in the U.K., the Sale of Goods Act required sellers to clearly defi ne exactly what they were offering for sale. Under the Act, traders and retail outlets had to be specifi c about their goods and services. Antique stores in particular had to offer antiques and only antiques. And, as mentioned in several previous articles, the defi nition of an antique is that it has to be a minimum of 100 years of age. Any younger than 100 years and it is simply second-hand or to use the current and more gentrifi ed term – previously enjoyed.

So, because of the Act, dealers discovered that they could not sell a mix of old and new items as all stock had to be genuinely antique. Thus, to avoid prosecution and the wrath of bureaucrats many antique dealers adopted the tag “and Collectibles” in order to cover their backsides in the event that some of the stock didn’t meet with the Act’s requirements. By adding the words “and Collectibles,” dealers were able to offer not only antiques but virtually anything that could even remotely be described as being sought after by a collector. Other dealers, such as my father, hated such petty bureaucratic

meddling so he changed the name of his store from Antiques of Abersoch to Annteaks of Abersoch.

So now we have the unfortunate situation where stores offering genuine antiques have virtually disappeared and instead we are left with a plethora of establishments selling anything, from toy cars to candy wrappers. Yes indeed, there is apparently a market for old candy wrappers!

But where, we ask, where are the real antique stores? The stores which take you back in time as you gaze upon items three or four hundred years old. Places where even goods from the 19th century are still considered modern? If you look hard enough there are still some out there but sadly they have all pretty much gone, disappeared, pushed out of business by on-line charlatans and junk dealers who cater to customers who are less informed than they ought.

While many antique dealers continue to have a passionate love and deep knowledge of their trade they have found that market forces severely impact the type of stock which they can offer to their clients. To make things more diffi cult the supply of genuine antiques has diminished partly because of a slowdown in the world economy and partly because vendors are using online sites to sell.

Second in a SeriesAs you venture

further afi eld on your tropical adventure, you start travelling by boat to reach exotic destinations along rivers and canals.

After a peaceful tour to see all sorts of colourful birds and maybe a few monkeys, your tour guide speeds up to get back to the hotel for a siesta.

You’re having a Sean Connery moment as your quiet boat ride turns into a high-speed chase.

And with the water so brown and murky it’s hard to picture the creatures beneath the surface.

Out of sight, out of mind.

The effects of boat

motors on Manatees and River Dolphins has been well documented, but a

recent study has now revealed the adverse effects on Spectacled Caiman.

A signifi cant number of Spectacled Caiman were recorded with injuries, and it’s speculated that many fatalities went undocumented.

In Tortuguero, Costa Rica, the range of Manatees has been limited to a small canal without boat access.

It remains to be seen how resilient Caiman populations are as boat traffi c continues to increase.

The solution is obvious and easy – slow down.

Speed limits can be put into place on canals.

The downfall is that these speed limits are treated like school zones – some drivers think they’re skilled enough not to hit anything, and the guy with the Ferrari just has a need for speed.

But you can always ask your driver to slow down.

Not only will you be doing the caiman a huge favour; you’ll get to enjoy the scenery at a more leisurely pace.

The Island Voices Chamber Choir hopes to add two voices.

The choir is comprised of 24 singers from the Comox Valley, Campbell River, and Quadra Island.

Since its creation in 1997, the choir has been has been committed to “singing excellent music excellently,” and has been building a loyal following in its home communities.

Island Voices

typically performs two major concerts each year as well as appearing in community and charity events.

Rehearsals are weekly, on Wednesday evenings, from September through to April in centrally situated Black Creek.

“We work hard at our music, but have plenty of fun in the process,” the group says.

There are openings for two tenors.

If you are keen to sing challenging music as part of a warm friendly team, aged 19 to 55(ish), able to read music and sing in an a-cappella setting, contact the choir director Jo-Anne Preston to arrange an audition. Phone 250-337-5730, 250-202-4300 or e-mail [email protected].

More information about the choir is available www.IslandVoicesChamberChoir.bc.ca.
