Rick Stringfellow, Senior Art Director from Electronic Arts Canada returned to Campbell River On April 18th, visiting Timberline School’s Animation and Digital Arts classes.

He also spoke to an enthusiastic audience of students and VIP’s from around the region.

“The response has been phenomenal,” said Timberline Animation teacher Dave Coad, “this is a wonderful opportunity for my students to have their work critiqued by an expert and fi nd out fi rsthand what is happening and what kind of future this industry has to offer, the kids were stoked.”

“The digital animation, visual effects and game industry leaves a yearly economic footprint of over two billion dollars in British Columbia,” says Joan Miller, Campbell River Creative Industry

Council Director (CRCIC), “the majority of the work goes on in the lower mainland but we now know it is possible to carve out a piece of the industry here in our region. The talent coming out of our local school system is phenomenal; so much credit goes to teachers like Dave Coad. We are so fortunate to have this kind of dedication to innovation and new technology.”

Infrastructure is the key to the growth

of this industry but education and training go hand in hand with the development of creative industry clusters.

“We require the talent to grow,” said Miller, “we have been in a series of meetings with educational institutions like North Island College and School District 72 as well as with experienced talent willing to create mentorships and partnerships with seasoned veterans of the industry. The

most recent example is the expansion of a “Youth Radio” program partnering the CRCIC, CR Arts Council instructor Fred Jiles, 99.7 The River, School District 72 and Matt Gionet, an experienced Audio Engineer who has recently moved back to Campbell River to open a new sound studio business.

With fi lm, animation, radio and the game industry it all starts and fi nishes around the strength of a good story.

With this regions close relationships to the environment, the area’s history of working the land and the sea and the wealth of First Nations stories there is incredible potential to create content for years to come.

“I don’t know what you’re doing around here but keep it up,” commented Stringfellow. “What the CRCIC and the dedicated instructors are doing is so amazing for the community. It’s

Industry pro helps grow animation talent

CUMBERLAND — ‘The ultimate expression of generosity is not in giving of what you have, but in giving of who you are.’

Thus spoke Johnnetta B. Cole, an American educator/humanitarian whose words are included on the website of the Cumberland Community Schools Society.

For the past 11 years, the non-profi t, volunteer-driven organization based out of Cumberland Elementary School has helped connect the village’s schools with the community at large. It does so by way of activities such as dancing, fl oor hockey, cooking, knitting and jewelry-making. There is also a running club, a BMX club — in conjunction with Coal Hills BMX —

and a twice-weekly homework club.

“It’s getting parents involved in the school,” honorary director Jeremy Grasby said. “It’s a great program. This year, we’ve got Grades K-6. We have about 240 kids in the school.”

He said the soccer club has drawn a “wicked response” of about 90 students, which exceeds a 30 per cent participation rate.

“It shows a real need through the community, so we’re meeting that need,” Grasby said.

Another CCSS cornerstone is the Environment Club, comprised of students seven to 12 years who tend to the food garden on school grounds. The club also helps maintain the Community Garden, and hosts guest speakers. Last year’s group helped clean the Cumberland marsh and marked storm

drains with yellow fi sh.Families have an

opportunity to shape up together at Tuesday evening boot camps, while mothers and toddlers can spend an hour walking and socializing on Wednesday mornings.

The society also provides a healthy lunch program, free to students in need. Otherwise the cost is three dollars for a small lunch or $3.50 for those with bigger appetites.

Grasby, who co-ordinates the after school and lunch programs, notes a “pretty good participation level” in the latter, usually with 50-60 lunches handed out each day.

The program is supported by Tarbells Coffee Bar, Cumberland Village Bakery, Carmie’s Cafe and Catering, Plates Eatery in Courtenay and Acropolis Kuizina in Campbell River.

“We try and source everything locally,” Grasby said. “We always make food available.”

For two years, Sunshine Organics has supplied a free fruit bin on a weekly basis. Cumberland Elementary is also enrolled in the B.C. School Fruit and Vegetable Nutritional Program that provides free fruit and vegetables,

compliments of B.C. Agriculture.

Another component is the community events, particularly Santa’s Breakfast and the Easter Egg Hunt.

May 29 is the third annual Huge Garage Sale fundraiser from 9-3 p.m. in the school gym. Donations can be dropped off from 10 a.m to 4 p.m. May 28, or picked up. Call Jennifer at 336-7902.

hard work but keep going I’m sure something will come of all this effort.” “The ability to call upon a core group of industry professionals like Rick

with such impressive backgrounds in the digital animation, visual effects and game will have a tremendous impact on our ability to foster the growth of the creative industries

here in our own backyard” said Miller.

Michael Bortolotto possesses a rare talent for instilling inspiration in audiences, or any person he comes into contact with, for that matter.

He encourages others to be all they can be, regardless of their situation. What makes Bortolotto special? He is a genuine person who cares deeply.

When you meet Bortolotto, you are meeting a pure soul, with a message everyone can use. His message is one of determination, persistence and overcoming barriers. He has taken one of his greatest weaknesses and turned it into an advantage.

Bortolotto says, “There are no

limitations to the mind except for those we accept”.

Michael Bortolotto was born with Cerebral Palsy, a condition that effects his large and small muscle coordination and for many years, the clarity of his speech.

He has overcome his disability by challenging internal and external limitations to become a motivational, inspirational and educational infl uence to many.

Bortolotto graduated from Southgate Secondary School in 1980 and was the fi rst student in the Campbell River School system with a disability to be entirely mainstreamed into an all-inclusive academic educational program.

His remarkable learning achievements were attained prior to computer use. During the fi rst fi ve years of public school, he relied completely on his memory and his mother’s support to write all assignments out on paper.

From grade six onward, he had an assigned scribe with whom he would visit in the counseling offi ces three or four hours a week where he

would explain to her what assignments to write out.

While attending Malaspina University/College, in Nanaimo, Bortolotto used an electric typewriter to complete a Diploma in applied Arts and Sciences in Recreation Administration.

He has paved the way in the public school system for many students who followed.

Bortolotto developed his public speaking skills, talents and abilities by joining Toastmasters International.

Since 1992, Bortolotto belonged to fi ve different clubs, has been the keynote at four regional conferences, has competed in numerous speech contests and has either won or placed second in all of them.

He has been a member of the Canadian Association Of Professional Speakers and has delivered two keynote speeches at two different chapters of the Canadian Association of Professional Speakers in Canada.

Bortolotto has been sharing his gifts with the world through public speaking

for over 18 years. He has presented talks to numerous organizations on issues involving leadership, change and effective thinking, teamwork, and how to be a positive rebel.

He speaks to youth of all grades and ages on the subjects of preventing bullying and negative peer pressure that occurs in the schools and throughout the community.

He is especially gifted at teaching students how to succeed in conquering and going beyond adverse challenges and impossible obstacles to turn their dreams and desires into reality - a lesson humans of all ages and abilities can benefi t.

One of his heartfelt passions is speaking to people with disabilities and empowering them to believe they are just as capable of living and succeeding in life as anyone else.

In 2002, Bortolotto was awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship from Rotary International. He has been inducted into his High School’s Wall of Fame, voted as the top citizen in the history of Nanaimo, and in 2009 he was chosen as one of the top entrepreneurs with a disability in British Columbia by Community Futures and Western Canadian Diversity Corporation.

The Centre for Spiritual Living Campbell River will to host an evening presentation with

Bortolotto on Friday, May 20 at 7 pm in the Willow Point Lions Hall.

Tickets are available at the door or in advance by contacting the Centre for Spiritual Living Campbell River at 250-850-3064 or via email at [email protected] . Adults $20, Students $5.

Door prizes, raffl e and dessert bar will be offered. For more information about this infl uential speaker, visit www.positiverebel.ca Bortolotto will also be the guest speaker at the Centre’s May 21 Sunday Celebration at 10:30 a.m. at the Willow Point Hall. All are welcome.

• The distance between essential sites averages about 16 kilometres.

• Other alternate sites give paddlers further options and additional safety margins.

• Most sites are

located on Crown lands, in Provincial Parks, National Parks, or Regional Parks.

At its completion, the BC Marine Trails Network will become the longest continuous water trail in the world! It will draw an increasing number of paddlers from other

parts of Canada, the US, and overseas.

Q. When might an outright lie feel like something less than fi bbing or prevarication?

A. When you’re able to get away with calling it “terminological inexactitude,” as did Winston Churchill when he coined the phrase and warned fellow Parliamentarians about its risk, says Ralph Keyes in “Euphemania.”

In time, his phrase became a popular euphemism for “a lie.” Some years later, Britain’s Cabinet Secretary Sir Robert Armstrong created an uproar by admitting he’d been “economical with the truth” when

testifying in a court case.

Men in particular try to avoid giving other men the opportunity to say, “You callin’ me a liar?,” which can get fi sts fl ying--or worse.

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the term “liar” is “normally a violent expression of moral reprobation, which in polite conversation tends to be avoided.”

Little wonder there’s such a demand for euphemisms and so many to choose from. Rather than accepting lying as a fact of life, we “manipulate” notions of truth, or “massage” the truth, or “sweeten it.”

“Credibility gap” and “humbug” are golden oldies, as are “stonewall,” “trim,” “whitewash.”

Lies can be “factually fl exible fi ctions,” “alternative realities,” “untruths.” A liar can be someone who is “in denial,” or suffering from “fi ctitious disorder syndrome,” or as one psychiatrist put it, “A liar is someone for whom truth is temporarily unavailable.”

Q. Who invented the cellphone and when and where?

A. Martin Cooper, then an engineer at Motorola, invented the fi rst hand-held cellphone in 1973, says “ScienceIllustrated.Com” magazine.

The model weighed over two pounds and had many thousands of component parts squeezed in. (As late as 1983, a portable hand-held phone cost about $4,000.)

Standing on a Manhattan sidewalk, Cooper placed his fi rst call to his rival, Joel Engel, whose team was also trying to invent a mobile phone for Bell Labs.

“As I walked down the street talking on the phone,” he remarked, “sophisticated New Yorkers gaped at the sight of someone actually moving around while making a phone call.

“Remember that in 1973, there weren’t cordless telephones, let alone cellular phones. I made numerous calls, including where

“I crossed the street while talking to a New York radio reporter--probably one of the more dangerous things I have ever done in my life.”

Q. As U.S. Air Force Captain Chuck Yeager described it, “the ride went smooth as a baby’s bottom. Grandma could have been sitting up there sipping lemonade.” What was the historic occasion?

A. After WWII, Yeager volunteered to fi nd out what would happen if a plane fl ew faster than sound (known as Mach 1), says Shawn Connolly in “The Book of Potentially Catastrophic Science.” Would it hit an “air

wall” and be smashed into smithereens?

Would some outer limit of human endurance be reached, causing eardrums to burst and brains to turn literally to mush?

Two days before the fl ight, Yeager broke two ribs in a horse fall, but afraid of a cancellation, told no one about his injury.

So on October 14, 1947, in the skies above California’s Mojave Desert, he boarded a B-29 bomber with the Bell X-1 rocket plane affi xed underneath.

At 20,000 feet the X-1 was released, which Yeager took to 45,000 feet before stepping up its speed.

When it exceeded 670 mph--the speed of sound at that altitude--people on the ground miles below heard the loud boom predicted by scientists.

Yeager brought the plane down smoothly. Afterward, a second generation X-1 was developed capable of Mach 2; by 1955, planes were fl ying at Mach 3.

At Mach 4, however, the fuselage gets too hot for a pilot to control, says Connolly, “with the potential for catastrophe extremely high.”
