Pet Food Bank opens in Morinville

by Stephen Dafoe

An adopted turtle and a financial rough spot have combined to create a new community service in Morinville. Rachelle Wood, an avid animal lover, has opened a Pet Food Bank to assist others who find themselves in a similar spot to what she and her family experi-enced.

Wood said her turtle Robin, a purebred red-eared slider, was left alone in a tank from the time it hatched and had little socialization. She adopted the pet and began working with the turtle, letting it out of the tank. Now socialized, Wood said the family can hold and pet the turtle.

But caring for the pet became problematic when the family hit a rough patch and couldn’t afford the food for the turtle, which Wood says has discerning tastes.

“We ran into a hard time and couldn’t get her food,” she said. “It killed us because we couldn’t feed one of our animals. That started me thinking if I’m having a hard time, how many other people are having a hard time?”

Wood said she has acquired a business license for the venture and is working on acquiring donation bins that can be set up around town to col-lect various pet food to assist families in need.

“I’m trying to find the wood for free because we are a non-profit,” she said. “We’re trying to get into the stores. We’re trying to get as much do-nations as we can. We do have some. It’s not just dogs and cats; it’s all an-

imals. We have birds, cats, dogs, turtles, fish, guinea pigs, bunnies. Not all are mine. A lot of them are fostered because I am an approved home with Infinite WOOFS.”

Wood said the program will run similar to the way regular food banks operate. She is getting assistance from a Pet Food Bank in Spruce Grove on the various paperwork she will need in running her Morinville operation.

“Everything will be inventoried into the computer, and it’s going to end up going per month if needed,” she said. “We’ll need proof of what animals you have, and then we go based on what that size of an animal should eat per day, per week, per month. We will measure everything out, label it all, and hand it out. It is a one time month, just like the Food Bank is every six weeks.”

Wood said until the bins are in local stores, donations are being dropped off at her home in Morinville. From there the do-nations go to storage areas. Once sufficient stocks are on hand, Wood said they will be-gin meeting those in need in a local parking lot to pick up their pet food supplies.

Right now donations are slow coming in as the project becomes known in the com-munity.

“I would rather see more coming in but because it’s so new, and I’m using a lot of Facebook and word of mouth to get it out, [donations are slow],” she said. “I’m hoping once the bins are out; there will be more.”

Wood has set up a Pet Food Bank Face-book page. Those wishing to donate can contact Rachelle Wood at 780-860-2895 or by email [email protected].

Block party funThe Father’s House Christian Fellowship’s Youth Group put on a Block Party at the Bob Foster Skate Park Friday night. The free event ran from 5 p.m to 9 p.m. and included a large number of activities for all ages as well as food and beverages.

National Column: Another Orange Wave for Alberta?

Can a revolution repeat itself twice in five months? Or is lightning in a bottle, by its very nature, captured but once?

That is the political question in Alberta in this federal election, but the fact that any questions are being asked in Alberta during a federal cam-paign is news in itself.

So is this: In the federal riding of Calgary-Skyview, NDP

organizers claim that more than 1,500 people showed up for a nomination meeting.

In the federal riding of Edmonton-Mill Woods, 10 times more memberships have been sold in advance of this election than 2011, organizers boast, and 21 people contacted the riding associ-ation president about running in the riding.

A Conservative leader, Stephen Harper, comes home to warn Albertans about replicating their provincial "disaster" and rolling the dice with the federal NDP.

There are a number of factors that have yet to be properly parsed before anyone can sug-gest that Albertans are prepared to move to the federal NDP under Tom Mulcair the way they did in the spring with the embrace of NDP Premier Rachel Notley.

Right now, it doesn't look like it. In fact, NDP support seems to be fading and, in some select ridings, its strength and improved Liberal for-tunes may make this province look more like Ontario in 2011 with Conservatives counting on progressive splits for re-election.

But dismissing the possibility of another Or-ange Wave means ignoring what happened here in the spring.

Conservative support in the province appears to be running anywhere from the mid-40s and

mid-50s, unachievable for parties anywhere else in any other region but disappointing here where Conservatives have become accustomed to sup-port north of 60 per cent.

Insiders agree that incumbents Joan Crock-att in Calgary Centre and Tim Uppal in Edmon-ton-Mill Woods have tough races, but if they fall, they will most likely fall to Liberals.

Edmonton Centre — once the riding of Liberal cabinet minister Anne McLellan, whose narrow victories earned her the nickname "Landslide Annie" - could easily go to New Democrat Gil McGowan, the former president of the Alberta Federation of Labour, now that former Conserva-tive MP Laurie Hawn has vacated.

Edmonton-Griesbach is also a potential NDP gain and the party will almost certainly hold its only seat, Linda Duncan's Edmonton-Strathcona.

St. Albert-Edmonton is also in play and unique in 2015 Alberta.

Brent Rathgeber, who quit Harper's caucus over what he called the prime minister's sup-pression of his MPs and has written a book on the lack of Parliamentary accountability, cannot be counted out against his Conservative rival Michael Cooper. Or Rathgeber and Cooper could split the conservative vote and create an opening for another NDP seat. Rathgeber dismisses that, saying he is in a tight two-way fight with Cooper, but he also says the fallout from the plunging price of oil is the main electoral story in Alberta.

It's not Harper's fault that oil prices have fall-en so badly, he says, nor is it Notley's, but when people lose jobs they tend to punish whoever is in power. Harper made a similar point in a recent Edmonton stop, saying neither he nor Notley can be blamed for the price plunge. Still, he blamed

Mr. James O’Brian, our letter Aug 14/2013 spoke to the broader community about the need for doctors, the article made this statement for the Chamber:

“At a recent Chamber discussion the Board agreed unanimously that they would like to “support government, business, and the medical community to attract and retain a full-time phy-sician for the citizens of Morinville.

“Morinville needs a broader community effort to attract full-time family physicians in the wake of our continued growth and aging demograph-

ics,” said MDCC President, Simon Boersma in a release late Wednesday afternoon. “The MDCC wants to assist.”"

The Morinville Chamber is working hard to bring these services to our community; we are still at step one. The “Plan“ we have not given up on. Every day we have exciting new orga-nizations coming to our community to invest, evidenced by our growth.

the premier for dealing with the crisis improperly.

"Where's their economic action plan?" he told an Edmonton audi-ence.

In a bid to help the Mulcair New Democrats, Notley will not introduce a budget until after Oct. 19, but she has hiked taxes on the wealthy and increased the corporate tax rate to 12 per cent from 10 per cent, both campaign promises.

New Democrats had always believed Notley would still be in an extended honeymoon period when federal voters went to the polls, but she is not impervious to cratered oil prices and layoff notices.

She will still be popular, but there is growing uneasiness with her lack of a budget and her industry royalty review and tax hikes - the Harper message - says James Rajotte, the outgoing Edmonton-Leduc

Conservative MP and long-time chair of the parliamentary finance committee.

"People here are hurting and 2016 is not shaping up as a very good year in Alberta," he says.

Notley is also not Mulcair and the federal leader has had to temper his oilsands comments.

Notley also benefited from a strong protest vote and a split right between the Progressive Conserva-tives and Wildrose.

She essentially took the Harper route to victory, conquering a divid-ed opposition.

What the NDP does have is en-thusiasm, provincial polling numbers in some Edmonton ridings rarely seen outside North Korea, and a much stronger roster of volunteers.

Sometimes political enthusiasm can cover a number of cracks. If they believe they are in these races, that can go a long way, and New Democrats may eventually muscle themselves into those races.

Re/Max offices mixes old and new on 100 Avenue

Larren Monti stands in front of the newly finished Re/Max offices on 100 Avenue, pleased with the project he has been involved in since the beginning. The 4500 square foot, two-story building is home to most of the Morinville Re/Max branch’s real estate agents.

Monti said the project began when Re/Max franchise owner Brent Melville approached Monti with a diagram of the building pocket and his wishlist of requirements - the need for 19 offices, and the need for the building preserve the look

and feel of Morinville’s historic downtown area. “We wanted to do everything to make it blend

in and kind of go along with Main Street,” Monti said. “There was a lot of back and forth. Every-one was happy with the final design.”

Monti said the new building is the first building to be completed since the Coeur de Morinville Area Structure Plan, a document that requires buildings to preserve the look and feel of old Morinville while using modern elements. “What I wanted to do was tie in the fact it is a com-

The custom builder said the project would not have been possible a few years ago when the province required a 30-foot setback from the road’s edge for redevelopment on 100 Avenue. “We were able to move the building right up to the curb without that setback, which was huge,” he said. “This building would not be here. There would be no parking. That plan [642 Functional Plan] helped expedite this, no question about it.”

Monti said the ability to work to the curb al-lowed him to have 15 parking stalls behind the building.

Monti and his company Atlas Premium Home Development specialize in custom built residen-tial homes that are fully designed in 3D, allowing

clients to do a walk through of their new home. He used the same process for the Re/Max proj-ect.

One of the custom elements in the Re/Max building is a fully automated fire system, moni-tored 24 hours a day. “If there is a fire upstairs at midnight, it sends an automatic signal to the local fire department telling them what room it is in and when it started.”

Re/Max co-owner Jocelyn Blackburn said the company was pleased with Atlas’ approach and work. “He had everything really organized ... and made it very easy for us,” Blackburn said, adding the expansion of their offices was greatly need-ed. “We’re happy to be in a place where we can spread our wings a little bit.”

Remembering Erin Doylby Stephen Dafoe

Engines revved Saturday afternoon as more than 100 riders departed from Kil-roy’s Pub in Legal for the annual Erin Doyle Memorial Poker Run. All proceeds from this year’s event go to Kids with Cancer.

Master Corporal Erin Doyle, who was with the 3rd Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, was killed in southern Afghanistan Aug. 11, 2008 when insurgents attacked his command outpost in the Panjwaii district. It was his third tour in Afghanistan.

But while the soldier and the man may be gone, his memory lives on in the hearts of those who knew him and those who knew only the kind of man he was.

“Erin Doyle was a monster of a man,” said organizer and Veterans’ Paratroopers Motorcycle Club Prairies Chapter President Kevin Lloyd. “He cast a big shadow, and he had a heart like a teddy bear. He loved his brothers, and he’s got brothers amongst us today because he gave his life. He gave his life for his brothers. And that’s what it’s about, and any veteran that’s here today - they know that.”

Legal Town Councillor Trina Jones re-called the effect Doyle’s death had on the community and the importance of the an-nual motorcycle event.

“It’s rides like this that help us remem-ber that [sacrifice] and gives them [sol-diers] the support they need to ask for that help from societies like Wounded Warriors and from you guys who’ve been there and done that,” Jones said.

Amounts raised from Saturday’s event were not available by press deadline.

From top: The first batch of riders departs. K-97’s Terry Evans addresses the riders. Bikes line the street outside Kilroy’s Pub. Bikers wait to depart.

Music in the Park wraps up a summer of song

by Stephen Dafoe

About 50 music lovers grabbed their lawn chairs, blan-kets, and non-perishable food items for the third and final installment of Music in the Park Thursday night.

The event was started by Sturgeon County residents Jan and Jim Baker this summer. Although the July 23 first event was cancelled and rescheduled due to a sud-den storm, Music in the Park grew steadily over the three events held under the clock tower on the St. Jean Baptiste Church grounds. The sessions offered locals and visitors an opportunity to enjoy a free evening of music while helping out the Morinville Food Bank with food and cash donations.

Co-organizer Jan Baker and Canadiana singer/song-writer John Spearn performed the first 90-minute concert July 30. Rob Heath and Bill Wortman, owner/operator of the Northern Lights Folk Club, were the Aug. 6 performers. Thursday night’s event featured a trio of talent, including Jessica Heine, Laura Bachynski, and Tim Chesterton.

The Bakers tossed the Music in the Park idea around for a few years before securing space from the St. Jean Baptiste Church Parish this summer. Both said they were pleased with the response and the turnout to the events.

“It’s been a bit of a process because being an outdoor event we are weather dependent,” said Jim Baker. “We’ve provided some great music for the community.”

The three events brought in $500 and 300 pounds of food for the local food bank.

The Bakers realize none of it would have been possible without the support of the musicians who provided their time.

“The music community itself is very generous with their time and their talents,” Baker said. “Basically, with a performance like we have tonight and previously, they just want to showcase their music. It’s really nice to perform it in front of an audience. When we have a setting like this in Morinville, this park setting, it’s just necessary to utilize it in a public setting. I think everybody wins.”

Singer Tim Chesterton performs a Canadian folk son as fellow performers Laura Bachynski (left) and Jessica Heine (right) watch.

Morinville Jets readying for another season by Stephen Dafoe

The Morinville Jets will hit the ice for a series of seven training camp sessions between Aug. 28 and Sept. 10. The annual gathering of Jets and Jet hopefuls gives the club the opportunity to start the formation of a team that will take on rivals in the Capital Junior Hockey League's 2015-2016 season.

Morinville Jets President Brent Melville is looking to create an even better team than the one that hit the ice last season. That season saw the Jets finish in 3rd place in the West Division. The Jets took the first round of playoffs in two games straight but were knocked out of the playoff season by the North Edmonton Red Wings in the second round.

"If we get the players back and some new ones that are possible, we could have a better season than last year," Melville said, adding he is still awaiting full commitments from a few solid former Junior A players they are trying to recruit.

This year's camp will start the weekend of Aug. 28 with an 8:30 to 10 p.m. session on Friday, a 4:15 to 5:45 p.m. slot on the Saturday, and a 2:30 to 4 p.m. slot on the Sunday. Would-be players will next skate on Sept. 1 and 3 from 9:45 to 11 p.m. and on Sept. 8 and 10 from 8:30 to 10 p.m. All skates are in Morinville.

Tournament to follow

The Jets, new and old, will get an opportunity to show their skills in a pre-season tournament Sept. 11 to 13 set for Morinville. That tournament will put the Jets up against the Leduc Riggers, Stony Plain Flyers and Ed-monton Mustangs.

Games will run Sept. 11 at 6 and 8:15 p.m., Sept. 12 at 6:15 and 8:30 p.m. and Sept. 13 at 4:45 and 7 p.m.

Those interested in trying out for the Jets Camp should contact Brent Melville at [email protected]. Additional details can be found online at www.morinvillejets.com.

QuidditchThe soccer pitch at Cardiff Park played host to a game of Quidditch, a sport from the Harry Potter novels. The Morinville Community Library has used the novels as the theme of this year’s Summer Reading Program.
