SCHOOL OPEN DAY Thanks go to the many parents and community members who attended school last Friday for our Open Day. There was something for everyone, including the annual Book Parade, Biggest Morning Tea and Science Week celebrations. I was interested to catch up with parents who recalled their own time as students at our school, enjoyed the opening verses of ‘The Man From Snowy River’ and observed some human robots! Donna Mackenzie, Donna Plant, all other members of staff who contributed, our students and visitors are to be congratulated for ensuring a successful day. POSITION VACANT Our Business Manager, Kevin Tootell, has secured a new position at Whittlesea Secondary College on the outskirts of Melbourne and will be finishing his role with us at the end of this term. I must thank Kevin very much for the expertise he brought to this role and to the various programs he was responsible for in his time at our school. The departure of his technical skills will leave a void that now needs to be filled. Our school is keen to recruit a new Business Manager and information regarding this role can be obtained from the Office. TASMANIA CAMP Liz Glazebrook, Wayne Riches and Lyndal Taylor have accompanied our Year 7-10 students in Tasmania this week. They negotiated Bass Strait successfully on Monday night and have since been taking part in a self-drive tour, including a visit yesterday to Port Arthur. One of the most important aspects of a week-long camp is dealing with unfamiliar situations – this may be dealing with different people, with fatigue or with different activities. I hope everyone comes back with some great memories, plenty of new knowledge and improved skills in coping with unfamiliar situations. EDUCATON SUPPORT STAFF A crucial component of any school is its staff. Our staff is made up of Teachers, Education Support (ES) and casual staff. This is ES Week and it gives our school community an opportunity to formally recognise the work done by our ES team. Kevin Tootell, Cheryl Storer, Leonie Carroll, Lyn Barnes and Kate Grant do essential work to keep our school functioning so I invite all members of the school community to thank these people for their contributions.

James welcomed our visitors to the assembly and everyone stood to
sing the first two verses of the National Anthem.
Jorja and Justin shared their information reports on Australian
Olympians. Jorja’s athlete was swimmer, Cate Campbell and
Justin’s, kayaker, Ken Wallace.
Jay-Jay then introduced the Athletics’ Day Movie and Alex asked the
Prep/1 students to share with us. They very capably read the story
of The Three Little Pigs.
Alannah and Hamish then shared their information reports about
Tessa Lavey and Dawn Fraser. Hamish then went on to talk about
Write a Book in a Day before the audience saw photos of the day
and viewed the finished book – The Great Save.
Lachlan announced the Year 2/3 students who further acquainted
us with the funny old man. They also shared their “here” and
“head” questions (questions that can be answered directly from the
text or those that you have to think about).
A number of Year 4/5/6 students then shared their Olympic data charts with facts about
the ancient and modern Olympics and some of the associated symbols before all others
stood and revealed facts about their chosen Olympians.
Gabby asked Mrs Mackenzie to come forward and present stars to students who had
met the reading requirements for the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Alannah, Bailey,
Holly, Justin, Geordi, Douglas, Cooper, Kyle, Luke and Markus all added their names to
the display.
The audience then listened to Holly’s report on Bronte Campbell.
Aaliyah announced the birthdays – Hailee, Bailey, Jayda, Rhys and Kyle – and everyone
sang Happy Birthday.
Mrs Zanker then thanked everyone for their attendance at
the assembly and invited them to move into the shared
space in readiness for the Book Day Parade and to share in
the Biggest Morning Tea and other Open Day activities.
After a brief intercession to allow participants to change
into Book Day costumes, Miss Trunchbull (Donna
Mackenzie) tapped her whip and called everyone to order.
Each class paraded and announced who they were and
which book they were from. It was great to see all
students (and some younger siblings) making an effort and
coming in costume.

Tooleybuc Sports Day
The Tooleybuc Sports Day will be held at Tooleybuc Central School on Tuesday, August 30th. The day commences at 8:30am with an assembly of all students.
School for all primary students is at Tooleybuc on this day. There will be no provision for classes at Manangatang.
NEWS FROM YEAR 4/5/6
Students in Year 4/5/6 continue to participate in Reading Rotations each morning to develop and
extend their reading skills. It is great that we have a number of parents, grandparents and friends
coming in to support those in the Literature Circles activity. Books being read at the moment
include: The Ghost on the Hill, Charlotte’s Web, Blabbermouth, Deep Water and Then. Thanks to
Debbie, Bev, Donna, Tarryn and Nat for their support of this activity (and for hearing reading in
other rooms too).
Some of our Olympian information reports were shared at assembly last week. We found that it
was easy to find information about some athletes but it is important to sift through this to
determine what is most important.
In Theme, we are continuing our Social Justice theme. At present, we are working in groups of
three to develop emotive messages about water, health or education – issues that remain
prominent in today’s society. We need to ensure that we present our messages in a variety of
ways to cater for visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learners. These should be ready to show at our
next assembly.
In Maths, we have completed work from a number of topics including probability and judgements,
reading and interpreting column and line graphs, using timelines, learning about volume, capacity
and mass, learning about transformations and ordered pairs. We continue to practise basic
number facts in with our long and short tots and tables on the ladders that have been taped to our
classroom floor.
The concert date is fast approaching and this week we started rehearsing our act. No further
details will be revealed at this stage but we hope you will be entertained on the day.

Outdoor Education Students in Outdoor Education will need a suitable bike,
helmet and change of clothing for bike riding sessions during lessons each
Thursday. The school has some bikes available for student use, however not
enough for all students. It is important students have their own helmet.

FASHION PARADE
The Uniting Church will once again be holding a Fashion Parade as their main fundraiser for the year on September 11 at 1.30pm. Some garments will be cash sale on the day by the providers; Jeans West, Millers, Pumpkin Patch and Kerrie Barry.
$10 entry includes afternoon tea.
