This year shrimp will be cooked, cooled, and

bagged on Thursday, August 28th at St. William. The fun begins at 2:00 pm and will go until done.

Come any time to help. Hope to see you there!

A friend wrote about Frederic: “He has the sacred fire. There is such an air of interior conviction in this man, that without the ap-

pearance of doing so, he convinces and moves you.” Frederic’s sacred fire was faith. Faith for Frederic Ozanam was indeed a living reality that permeated his entire being; it was his “second sight.” Yet it was a hard-won gift. Frederic attributes the foundation of his faith to his parents. “In the midst of an age of skepticism, God gave me the grace to be born in the true faith. As a child I listened at the feet of a Christian father and a saintly mother.”(Ramson, Praying for Frederic, p.49)

Respect Life Judy Hyatt

In recent weeks, we have looked at the evolution of how Roman Catholics initi-ate children into the life of the Church. How did cus-toms evolve in the Eastern Church? At one time, Christians in both East and West preferred to celebrate baptism in a community setting, with large numbers of adults and children initi-ated at Easter. The two branches of Christianity began to split on the proper time to do this. In the East, water was blessed in abundance on the feast of the Epiphany, which marked, among other things, the baptism of the Lord. Once infant bap-tism was fixed on that day,

Treasures from our Tradition

local customs marking a birth began to evolve. One cele-bration was the giving of a name on the eighth day, an-other was the “purification” of the mother on the fortieth day after birth. In that bless-ing, re-enacting Mary and Joseph’s journey to the tem-ple, the priest took the baby in his arms and placed the child before the altar. Just as Simeon received the child Jesus, so the priest received the new Christian while chanting Simeon’s prayer. Later, normally on Epiphany, the priest would baptize, chrismate (confirm), and give a few drops of the Precious Blood to the child in a joyous celebration of the whole community. —Rev. St. Bernard Abbey Monk’s Bread

“It’s Divine” For the first time ever outside the Monastery, St. Ber-nard Abbey’s Monks Bread will be offered at the 44th Annual Seafood Festival. An estimated 100 loaves of

bread will be available for purchase at the festival for $5.00 each. Let everyone know about this heavenly “treat” we will have at our

dessert table this year.

“I know well that it is hard, and sometimes even ap-pears to be impossible to forgive, but it is the only way, because all revenge and all violence give rise to further revenge and violence. It is certainly less difficult to forgive when one is aware that God never tires of loving and forgiving us.” Pope John Paul II, World Peace Day January 1, 1997

Please bring baked goods to Craven Hall on Friday before the Seafood Festival or to Civitan Park early Saturday morning for our Dessert Sale. Individually packaged brownies, bars, cookies, candies, small loaf pans and pies, etc. sell quickly. Cakes are always welcomed too. Please no items requiring refrigeration.

Propane Tanks The festival is in need of 12 propane tanks. Please con-sider donating your tank (preferably full) during festival weekend. Label tank with your name and bring to Craven Hall by Friday, August 29th. Tanks may be picked up on Sunday, August 31st.

$1000.00; Segundo premio, $500.00; Tercer premio, $250.00.
