I read this article by an amazing minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, Bob Russell, and I knew I needed to share it with you all. I pray we would be inspired by his observations.

Spiritual Lessons from a Dramatic Rescue

People all over the world were captivated by the plight of a dozen boys and their soccer coach who were trapped in a cave in Thailand for eighteen days. I’m a little claustrophobic, and frankly, that would petrify me. However, as I followed the news reports of their dramatic rescue the past couple of weeks, I couldn’t help but think about the spiritual parallels to Christianity.

They were hopelessly trapped. Once the cave was partially flooded, they couldn’t get out. They would have to swim for hundreds of meters under water, and most couldn’t even swim at all. Escaping on their own was impossible. The Bible teaches us that we are hopelessly trapped in sin. We can’t get out on our own. We can’t overcome our own addictions and habits.

They were destined to die. If no one came to their rescue, they were doomed. It was just a matter of time. The Bible says, “We are dead in our trespasses and sins.” We are destined for hell “…without hope and without God in the world.”

Someone with superior resources came to rescue them. Thailand’s Navy SEALs with oxygen tanks and scuba-diving gear endangered their own lives to rescue them. Jesus, the Son of God, came from the protected environment of heaven into this hostile world to rescue us and lead us out of darkness into his marvelous light.

There was only one way out. The Thai Navy SEALs proved by their very presence there was a way to escape. But that was the only way. Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Their rescue required trust. Those young athletes had to put their faith in someone who obviously knew more than they. They had to trust in a person and follow him for as long as three and four hours, through a narrow, treacherous labyrinth of caves. That’s faith. Jesus said, “Follow me,” “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me will live…”

Everyone rejoiced with their rescue. A friend told me he was riveted to the television and wept for joy when all twelve

boys were saved. The Bible says, “There is more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who don’t need to repent.”

The boys had to be nurtured and cared for once rescued. They were taken immediately to a hospital where they were given food, liquid, and medical attention. A new Christian needs to be nurtured and discipled in order to survive in a hostile world.

Their salvation cost the life of one Navy Seal. There was one rescuer who paid the supreme sacrifice. The soccer team’s salvation was not without a high cost. Ours isn’t either.

“You know that it was not with perishable things such as silver and gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from our forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect” (1 Peter 1:18-19).

The soccer coach was the last one out. After the Thai Navy SEALs risked their lives and each member of his team had escaped safely proving it was possible, can you imagine that coach telling the SEALs, “No thanks. I’m going to look for another way out,”? No…of course not! He realized this was his only hope of survival and he jumped at the chance.

Only Jesus proved He was God by performing undeniable miracles. Only Jesus died an atoning death for our sins on the cross. Only Jesus conquered the grave and arose to live forever. Only Jesus can legitimately say, “Because I live, you also will live.” That’s why the Bible asks, “…how shall we escape if we ignore such a great salvation?” (Hebrews 2:3).

As we have been focusing on sharing our faith in Christ, this article makes me think about the people here in the valley who are also trapped in a pit waiting for salvation. Since we know that Jesus Christ has already died for them, we need to let them know about Him, too.

I love you all,

Pastor Dan

Jesus, our shepherd said that "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me." (John 10:27) Your elders are very blessed to be serving God with you all here at Appleton Christian. Over the next several months, we will be using at least part of our Elder’s Corner to introduce ourselves to those in the body who may not have met us yet.

Hi, John Wilson here. You've probably seen me around from time to time (since my family has been members here since about 1999 or so). Back in those days, there was just the three of us: my wife Angie, two-year-old Josiah, and me. It seems like just yesterday that Josiah was quietly pushing around his plastic tractor under the table while we were holding Bible study in the – then fellowship hall – now Worship Center foyer. We added Elisabeth to our family in 2001 and Thomas in 2006. And they’re all nearly “full-growed” now! I’ve served as an Elder in the past, but have a new passion alongside my fellow shepherds. I can really feel that God has some important work for us in His church and that things are on the move. I’ve seen a lot of people come and go over the years, and I really want to see a lot more people come than go. People are searching for a place to belong, and that place is securely in God’s arms alongside fellow believers who can share life’s joys and sorrows. I really want to become better acquainted with everyone who comes through the doors, so that I can better minister to them. One of the things I love is to study God’s Word and trying to teach it. I hope that I can be of use to those around me to become better rooted in Scripture, so they won’t be “…tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching…” (Eph 4:14, NIV). I love “visiting with people”, as they used to say. So, next time you see me, ask me some provocative question and we’ll have a conversation about it – and maybe a laugh or two.

Ministry: Western Colorado Christian Campus Ministries is a collection of churches, businesses, and individuals that have teamed to support the students of Christian Student Fellowship on the campus of Colorado Mesa University. This involves three main areas: 1. Encouraging and ministering to the needs of these college students. Helping them to stand on their own in a broken world. 2. Equipping students with everything they need to discover what God has for their lives. 3. Enabling students to

become leaders in their lives and churches. Prayer Requests: There are 10,000 young adults on the campus of CMU. Many of them are on their own for the first time and facing pressures of every kind. Please pray that God meets them where they are and covers them in His loving arms. We are in need of people to join this mission. Three areas of support: 1. Prayer for these hurting students. They need to know that they are loved and that there is hope in a broken world. There is a great deal of pain in the eyes of these kids. 2. Experience. We need you to share your lives with them. 3. Finances. We need about $50,000 a year to do this ministry. Please go to the website: www.wcccm.org and sign up for our monthly newsletter and needs list.
