Several years ago I was
out with a wonderful
Christian brother
named Matt who is
now a missionary in
Albania. We were out
sharing our faith and
struck up an interest-
ing conversation with a
man named Randy who
believed following God, being a
Christian, was boring and didn’t hold
enough excitement for him. He said,
“He wanted to be free to fly like a
kite and being a goody-good Chris-
tian would just cause him to crash
and burn.”
Years later I heard a great illustration
from a pastor that I wished I had
heard prior to Matt’s and my conver-
sation with Randy. It goes something
like this. There was a kite one day
flying around and he began talking
to himself. The kite said, “If I could
get rid of this stupid string I could
really fly! I could fly above the
clouds…as high as I wanted. If I
could get rid of this annoying string.
nothing could hold me back! I’m lim-
ited by the string.”
Well, one day the kite got his wish.
The string broke and the kite came
crashing down to the earth. What the
kite had failed to realize was that the
same string that kept it down kept it
up as well. Cutting the string didn’t
make it freer at all.
The point is that we will always head
toward disaster when we cut the
string of dependence on God in
search of more pleasure. The same
string that at times may seem to
hold us down also keeps us flying
high.
My prayer for the world-wide Church
is that they will begin to trust God
and let Him hold the string. When we
allow God to hold the string and we
put our complete faith and trust in
Him, we will soon see just how
“exciting” Christianity can be!
Brothers and Sisters, we have a lot to
be thankful for and excited about at
MUCC! Let's get busy serving the
Lord!
God Bless You All,
Pastor Greg
Pastor Greg Bouck
“But be very careful to obey all the
commands and the instructions that Moses
gave to you. Love the LORD your God, walk
in all his ways, obey his commands, hold
firmly to him, and serve him with all your
heart and all your soul.” - Joshua 5 NLT

Women’s Fellowship will be
starting our new year on
Wednesday, August 1 at 7:00 p.m.
in the Fellowship Hall. This is the
meeting we celebrate our Past
Presidents with a birthday cake!
Every past president’s name is
read, and it is a time of reflection
of the women that have served our
church.
This year our bible study is
entitled: “God’s Promise: I am with
You!” In nine lessons, this study
traces God’s recurring promise of
presence from Genesis through
the Gospels . . . from the begin-
ning to the end of the age. YOU
too are invited to join us in a time
of studying God’s word and won-
derful fellowship!
We have an exciting year ahead of
us with the hosting of the
Hospitality Banquet this fall, which
will be the first time since 2011.
Women’s Fellowship meets on the
first Wednesday of the month. We
hope you will come join us as we
begin a new year on August 1 at
7:00 p.m.

Out-going President

The Yard Sale on June 16 took in $1381.61! Thanks to everyone
who donated items, helped with set up and/or clean up, worked
the sale, prepared food items to sell, served, purchased items or
participated in any way. It takes us all to make our yard sale a
success!
This summer Monticello UCC part-nered with Covington Wesleyan Church in Reidsville for
June 24th through June 28th. “Shipwrecked” was this year’s theme & the children “ventured onto an uncharted island where kids survive and thrive.” There various activities “anchored the kids in the truth that Jesus carries them through life’s storms”. As these pictures show, they had lots of fun along the way!

In Concert
Tyler and Naomi
Woods
On June 10th, Tyler and Naomi Woods presented a concert to support their mission trip
to Costa Rica, planned for the first week in August. They will be joining a team from Cal-
vary Church under the ministry of Mercy Mission Teams that will include medical personal
as well. They are excited about being able to make a difference in the lives of those they
will serve as they share in tangible ways the love of Christ with those they meet. Their
concert included beautiful music in song and instruments. The concert was well attended
and $1,236 was raised to make their mission trip possible!

Back to School Humor
• Summer is over. Time to officially remember what day of the week it is!
• “Labor Day is a glorious holiday because your child will be going back to school the next day. It would have been called Independence Day, but that name was already taken.” (Bill Dodds)
• Receiving new textbooks, one student to an-other: “Psst. How do you turn this thing on?”
• Parent: “What did you learn today?” Kindergartner: “Not enough. I have to go back tomorrow.”

On August 19 our Men’s Chorus will sing during the 11 a.m. worship service. This is always a favorite event, and all
men are invited to join us. Practices will be
August 7 and 14 at 6:30 p.m.
Choir practice will resume on Tuesday, August 14 at 7:30 p.m. The members of the choir have enjoyed a vacation from weekly choir practice this summer, but we’re anxious to get
back to our weekly routine.
As we begin this new year of music, we would like to extend the opportunity for those of you who have been considering singing in the choir to join us. It is a wonderful time of music and fellowship as we learn new songs to sing

. . . Nancy and Greg Bouck in the loss of be-loved, long-time canine companion MoJo last month.
Congratulations to Monticello UCC for being a 5 for 5 Church!
Being a 5 for 5 church means that MUCC has provided funding to support the success and sustainability of the United Church of Christ's national ministries by contributing to its basic operating support and mission. Being 5 for 5 means our church is a leader, providing support to Our Church’s Wider Mission and the Special Mission Offerings: One Great Hour of Sharing, Strengthen The Church, Neighbors In Need and The Christmas Fund.
Thank you to Friendship UMC for hosting the July 5th Sunday Sing. Browns Summit UMC, Jackson UMC and Fairgrove UMC also participated. Thanks to the choirs for the beautiful music, everyone who came out in support, and to Frances Cable for sharing the great pictures.
Jerry Alderman . . . is having what could
be the final reconstruc-tive surgery on his foot on August 1. The doctor
is hopeful that Jerry will be back walking on that foot in about a month.
Thank you to: . . . Everyone who attended the JUNE MUNCH! And also to our hosts Tyler, Nikki, Karrington & Harper Faucette, Mike & Tama Faucette, Sharon Hall, David, Clyda, Leia and Adam Johnson. The barbecue dinner received rave reviews, totally sold out and raised a grand total of $1475.00 for the Building Fund!
