From Rose on The Golden Girls to Sue Ann on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Betty White has played some of the best-loved characters in television history. Discover the woman behind the laughs in the new documentary Betty White: First Lady of Television, premiering Tuesday, August 21, at 7pm on KQED 9 during the August pledge drive. White is an industry pioneer. She was the first woman to produce a national TV show, the first woman to star in a sitcom, the first producer to hire a female director and the first woman to receive an Emmy nomination. Filmed over the course of five years of White’s life by the team behind the acclaimed Pioneers of Television series, Betty White: First Lady of Television is a warm look at the life and career of the beloved television and film legend who celebrates 80 years in show business this year — officially the longest career in the history of TV. Betty White: First Lady of Television traces her remarkable career, from her early days in radio to her first TV series as co-host of a live, five-and-a-half-hour, six-day-a-week variety show. She produced and starred in the pioneering sitcom Life with Elizabeth and was a popular TV personality throughout the 1950s and 1960s. A rabid game player in real life, White was a much sought-after game show contestant. It was during an appearance on Password that she met the love of her life, the man who would become her husband, Allen Ludden.

The 1970s saw White win two Emmys for her role as the man-hungry “Happy Homemaker” on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. White earned another Emmy in the mid-1980s for her role as the innocent Rose Nylund on The Golden Girls. She made history when she hosted Saturday Night Live in 2010 at the age of 88 — and won yet another Emmy. Although she continues to attain roles and accolades, White’s true love is animals; she has been a passionate animal advocate throughout her career. Viewers will see White behind the scenes at work, entertaining at home and interacting with her close friends, one of whom is a 900-pound grizzly bear. The film is packed with hilarious clips from her long career and comments from friends and co-stars, including Valerie Bertinelli, Georgia Engel, Tina Fey, Valerie Harper, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Gavin MacLeod, Carl Reiner, Ryan Reynolds, Tom Sullivan, Alex Trebek and many more.

Betty White: First Lady of Television premieres Tuesday, August 21 at 7pm on KQED 9.

Calling all Deep Look fans — KQED’s award-winning YouTube series is expanding its coverage and needs your help! Deep Look has launched its first-ever, fan-funded initiative on the popular crowdfunding site Patreon to find alternate revenue streams and take the series places it has never been before. Deep Look marries the cinematic tradition of PBS nature documentaries with personal, question-driven YouTube shows. The series explores big science concepts by going very small, releasing three-to-five-minute episodes shot in ultra-HD (4K), using macro cinematography and video microscopy, approximately 20 times a year. Its YouTube channel currently has more than 600,000 subscribers. By partnering with Patreon — which enables creators to foster deeper relationships with their fans through behind-the-scenes looks, additional content and a sense of community in

exchange for getting funding — Deep Look will be able to film more videos and travel to locations it would not be able to go without these patrons. If Deep Look reaches its first major goal of raising $5,000 per month, the team will travel to the deserts of the southwestern United States and produce three episodes about the wild creatures of this forbidding wilderness. Deep Look’s supporters on Patreon can contribute as little as $2 a month, all the way up to $250 or more. Deep Look will offer patrons exclusive access to its production process and special rewards like online chats with producers, digital downloads and exclusive swag. “We already know from our Deep Look fans on YouTube that they are very passionate about our science videos and highly interested in how we make them,” says Craig Rosa, Deep Look’s series producer. “Having Deep Look on Patreon will give us the opportunity to identify

our super fans and hopefully give us the extra resources to give them more!” Patreon’s CEO and co-founder Jack Conte adds, “KQED is leading public media’s charge on digital innovation, so for them to be using Patreon’s membership tech to finance their programming is an exciting, pivotal moment for Patreon and for public media holistically.” Help Deep Look reach this goal. Join Deep Look’s community on Patreon by visiting patreon.org/deeplook.

Funding for Deep Look is provided in part by PBS Digital Studios. Deep Look is a project of KQED Science, which is also supported by the Templeton Religion Trust and the Templeton World Charity Foundation, the S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation, the Dirk and Charlene Kabcenell Foundation, the Vadasz Family Foundation, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the Fuhs Family Foundation and the members of KQED.

Does your child like to eat? Does your child have a sophisticated palate? Is your child a budding food critic? We want to feature that child on Check, Please! Bay Area — Kids! For the first time ever, kids will have a seat at the table on Check, Please! Bay Area. It’s the same show you know and love, but with three kids sharing their opinions of each other's favorite restaurants under the guidance of our host, Leslie Sbrocco. We’re looking for young, articulate and passionate foodies between the ages of 10 and 14 years old to come into our studios at the KQED headquarters in San Francisco to star in four new episodes of Check, Please! Bay Area — Kids! If your children simply cannot stop gushing

about the last meal they enjoyed at their prized local eatery, restaurant, cafe, diner, hole-in-the-wall or food truck — send them our way! On Wednesday, July 25, casting officially opens online at kqed.org/checkplease. Slots are limited and applications will be processed on a first come, first served basis. In addition to completing an application, kids and their parent/guardian must be willing to travel to KQED in San Francisco for an interview on Saturday, August 18, from 11am to 2pm, and be available for the taping of the shows in September. Kids and their parent/guardian are required to visit three eateries, and they may be required to travel up to 50 miles to visit restaurants. Pre-registration via

the online application is required for this event and parents/guardians must accompany kids at all times. For more details and to apply visit kqed.org/checkplease.

Congrats to KQED reporter Sukey Lewis, whose three-part radio series, “Inside Santa Clara Jails, Predatory Bail Schemes Flourished for Years,” received a National 2018 Edward R. Murrow Award from the Radio Television Digital News Association. The Edward R. Murrow awards recognize the best journalism produced by radio, television and digital news organizations in the country. Lewis’ piece was honored in the Large Market Radio category. Lewis’ reporting explores the unprecedented arrest of 31 California-based bail bond agents. Through court records and interviews with inmates, district attorneys, correctional officers and others, Lewis exposes a system of “bail capping,” whereby county inmates steered or coerced newly arrested

inmates toward certain bail agents in return for money, favors or access. She also found that the Santa Clara Sheriff’s Department was aware of the problem, but failed to stop it. The series was edited by Mia Zuckerkandel and supervised by Tyche Hendricks. The story also aired nationally on Reveal, from the Center for Investigative Reporting. “This award recognizes the power and importance of watchdog journalism that exposes corruption, wrongdoing and the exploitation of vulnerable populations,” says Holly Kernan, vice president, KQED News. “I hope people understand how critical journalism is to a functioning democracy in this time where journalism and journalists are under sustained attacks.”

KQED also received a Regional Edward R. Murrow Award in the same category for The California Report’s profile of three refugees and their distinct paths to California. “Three Refugees, Three Journeys to California” was produced by Sasha Khokha, Laura Klivans, Suzie Racho, Ryan Levi, Victoria Mauleon and Carrie Feibel.

Radio Specials and Highlights

On February 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, authorizing the designation of military zones and paving the way for the incarceration of more than 120,000 Japanese Americans in internment camps. Families were forced to abandon anything they couldn’t carry and detained under desolate conditions often surrounded by barbed wire and armed guards. A vast proportion of the incarcerated Japanese Americans were residents of California, and two-thirds were American citizens. These Americans were ordered to relinquish any loyalty to Japan — a country many had never even visited — and swear their allegiance to a country that was violating their human rights. As a testament to the legacy of this injustice and its lasting impact on our community, KQED is proud to present Order 9066, a three-part series on Japanese internment from APM Reports and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. Narrated by Pat Suzuki and Sab Shimono, veteran actors who were both interned as children, the series traces the history of Japanese internment through archival audio and personal narratives — from the racist sentiments that motivated the executive order and upheld the injustices of incarceration to life in the camps and the incredible ways Japanese Americans endured.

Today, Executive Order 9066’s impact remains. Internment sites throughout California (including Sacramento, Fresno, San Bruno and Salinas) are now designated historical landmarks, often holding Day of Remembrance commemorations on the anniversary of the signing of the order.

The Queen’s Favourite Animals tells the story of Queen Elizabeth’s life and character through her relationships with her animals. The documentary profiles the 13 generations of corgis the queen has bred since her 18th birthday (when she received Susan, the matriarch of this corgi dynasty) as well as her triumphs in the horseracing world. This is a portrait of the queen as the person she perhaps always wanted to be — a countrywoman.

The Queen’s Favourite Animals airs Thursday, August 2, at 8pm on KQED Plus.

Go inside the closed society of Iran with New York Times correspondent Thomas Erdbrink on the new two-part FRONTLINE, Our Man in Tehran. With humor and curiosity, Erdbrink shares a rare journey into a private Iran often at odds with its conservative clerics and leaders. Whether protests about headscarves, visits to America or dreams of martyrdom, Erdbrink gets Iranians to reveal the intricacies of their private worlds and the challenges of living under theocratic leaders.

FRONTLINE’s Our Man in Tehran airs Monday, August 13, and Tuesday, August 14, at 9pm on KQED 9.

Step into the large-scale, light-based installations of British artist Bruce Munro in the new documentary Light — Bruce Munro. Munro conveys his love of experimentation through flickering light tubes, LED-lit bottles and innovative repurposed materials set in outdoor environments. This documentary illustrates the inspiration for Munro's first outdoor Field of Light in Wiltshire, England, through to his U.K. and U.S. exhibitions.

Light — Bruce Munro premieres Wednes-day, August 22, at 8:30pm on KQED 9.
