Presidents Message Presidents Message Presidents Message Presidents Message Linda KohlerLinda KohlerLinda KohlerLinda Kohler I hope everyone is having a good summer! The dog days of summer are upon us! I
just recently found out that the dog days of summer have nothing to do with our four
footed friends - rather the fact that Sirius, the dog star, rises with the sun, and some
believe that their combined energy makes the weather even hotter! These hot days
(or rainy!) makes me want to stay inside and catch up on unfinished painting projects!
I dont know about you, but I have tons of those!
Our club has an exciting next few months coming up! The HOOT bus trip on August 6 is fast approaching.
It is a stress-free way to get to Columbus, and there is still room on the bus! Check out Alices article for
information. We have a special guest at our next meeting on Sunday, September 13. Keith Maupin, father
of Matt Maupin, will be with us for lunch and to pick up our donations for the Yellow Ribbon Support Group.
Sandie Tieman will also teach a Christmas project after the meeting. And we have a seminar taught by
Stephanie Hauser on Saturday, September 19! She is going to show us how to add sculpting to a cat
gourd to enhance the look. We have so much fun stuff coming up! Please make plans to join the fun!

GCDA HOOT BUS TRIP AUGUST 6TH ALICE GOLDFUSS, COORDINATOR
Picture this: You drive to the HOOT trade show where, for several hours, youre in Art
Heaven. This is your once-a-year opportunity to stock up on all the art supplies you
want and need and to purchase new products you might not easily find elsewhere.
You find lots and lots of things you want to buy and maybe one or two of them are
fairly large. Your friends who came with you found treasures as well. As the after-
noon wears on, youre all wondering how many people and purchases will actually fit
in your car. Then images like these come to mind:
IT DOESNT HAVE TO BE LIKE THAT! For only $25.00, the GCDA HOOT BUS will take care of all the driving, parking and
transporting of your purchases. (Plenty of space for purchases, large and small!) You
can sit back, relax, enjoy muffins and a beverage and just visit with friends!
The bus will make pick-ups at Sams in Western Hills, leaving promptly at 8 am, at the Ken-
wood area in the Sycamore Shopping Center by Macys Furniture/Babies-R-Us about 8:15.
and Lebanon along the way if needed. We plan to leave the show at 4:30 and enjoy dinner
along the way at Ruby Tuesdays in Grove City, returning before dark.
To sign up, e-mail Alice Goldfuss, at [email protected]. Bring a
check for $25 payable to GCDA or mail it to Alice at 4389 Simca Lane,
Cincinnati, OH 45211. The bus ride will be available until time of departure!
Before you know it,
you have a fleeting
thought about
which friend might
be persuaded to
ride on top of the
car, but then quick-
ly dismiss it.

Christmas Baskets & Ornaments Raffle
Melanie Wilmhoff
At the July meeting, Sandie Tieman and Carole Arend turned in their Christmas Raffle painted items. So
far, I have painted items from (13) of our members. Please, please, please paint your ornaments or bas-
ket and turn them in to me! The deadline for turning them in is October. We would really benefit from
having the baskets earlier so we can photograph them to use for selling the Raffle tickets. Below are the
(2) baskets I have so far. Pat Hull painted the one on the left and Sandie Tiemans is on the right. They
are exquisite!!
In order for you to receive your member-in-good-standing status, you must paint 6 Christmas ornaments
or a Christmas raffle box or incentive piece. If you turn them in by October, you will receive tickets for a
chance to win the incentive prize. If you turned yours in in July, you will receive 20 incentive tickets.
If you paint a raffle basket or incentive piece, you do not have to paint ornaments. If you wish to paint or-
naments in addition to the basket or incentive, you may do so. We can always use more ornaments for
the baskets.
The Christmas Raffle is one of our money makers for the year, so please support this activity for our club.
You may turn in your ornaments to me at any meeting. I plan to have Raffle tickets for you to start selling
on the bus to HOOT.

Just a reminder that Keith Maupin will be attending our Sept. meeting to pick up the donated items for the
Yellow Ribbon Support Project. Please bring your donations to the meeting in an easy-to-carry box. Keith
will have lunch with us and maybe talk a little about his service to our Military.
Also, Robert from Star Fire Council was unable to make our July meeting. He plans to attend our Octo-
ber meeting and help us paint the rest of the walker bags. He will then take them to the nursing home
where he works.
As requested, below is a list of items that can be donated to the Yellow Ribbon Support Project. Remem-
ber we are trying to stay away from perishable items. Thanks for your generosity!

MEMBER IN GOOD STANDING The term member in good standing often gets mentioned at
our meetings. What exactly does that mean? It is basically
the best way for members to be active in our group and
show that they support what we stand for. The white binder
contains everyones member in good standing log, and is
passed around at each meeting so it can stay updated. The
requirements range from attending 2 meetings to participating
in a service project, or bringing a food item to the meeting.
There are several other things, but the most famous of them
is to paint 6 ornaments or a raffle box by the October meeting. The 6 ornaments are an important
show of support from members, because they are raffled off at the Christmas party to 6 lucky win-
ners but that raffle is also one of GCDAs biggest money makers!
Members in good standing get a few perks back also! It allows members to run for and serve in a chapter
office. We receive two $15 vouchers that can be used to reduce the price of the seminars that we offer.
A $15 deduction off of retreat is also given to members in good standing. The club is paying us back $45
in total, if we choose to use it. If the $15 dues is taken out of that, then each member can get $30 back
during the course of the year!
Please stay current on your Member in Good Standing status! It is the most important thing you
can do to show your member spirit!!

August Program Report
Emily Stamm, VP Programs
Our July 12th meeting was great fun! The business part of our meeting accomplished a lot and the month-
ly project was a Haunted House Votive taught by the very talented Nancy Vincent. There were 14 peo-
ple who had signed up for Nancys class! Thanks so much Nancy, for teaching this project-it was a great
seasonal project!
There is no meeting in August because many of our members visit HOOT in Columbus. Plan ahead for
our next meeting in September, which will be a canvas painting with Sandie Tieman. This monthly project
will cost $8. This is a great value and a project that will encompass many painting techniques and
brushstrokes! Please look for the class registration sheet in this newsletter-it will give you the details and
show you a picture of the project.
Stephanie Hauser will be teaching a 6-hour seminar on Saturday, September 19 from 9:30-3:30. The
project, called Cat and Company is a gourd painted with Acrylics and uses Quickwood to add onto the
piece. This is our second seminar of the year-any member in good standing may use their voucher for
this project. The project will cost $40 or $25 if you have a voucher to use. The registration sheet is in-
cluded in this newsletter, so sign up ASAP-registration deadline is September 12th.
Thank you for all of your suggestions, help, and support in planning our programs. I have been schedul-
ing the monthly programs for 2016-it is wonderful that we have so many skilled members, willing to share
their talents with us! Please come to our monthly meetings and take classes and seminars!
Happy Painting!
Emily

2016 Retreat Chair: Theresa Morris ; Co-Chair: Jo Ann Sharpshair
The retreat committee has begun planning meetings.
Tickets for the Retreat 2017 Room and Board raffle prize will be sold prior to retreat weekend. This offers the oppor
unity to win room and board for the 2017 retreat to anyone not present for the 2016 retreat.
It was determined that offering one day classes at retreat would be a logistical nightmare. This is meant to be a weekend
away and it would be difficult to track class/meal/lodging participation. GCDA offers one day seminars throughout the
year.
Please share your ideas and thoughts with a committee member.
A preview party is being planned.
Christmas Raffle: Melanie Wilmhoff
Melanie is collecting Christmas ornaments/baskets for the raffle. Sandie Tiemans ornament basket was received today.
