NEWS AND COMMENT

This issue is not scheduled – it’s an extra because we are concernedthat support for club events is not what we hope for, maybe it’s theresult of the weather, the money supply, the lack of interest in theextra events we try to lay on or that the bi-monthly news was notkeeping you updated late enough for your memory!Since May we have flopped! Attendances at Dinner 22, WalliswoodTrial 13, Practice Event 7, Mountain Bike Ride 7, Working Party 2 andMotorcycle ride out 5. Poor attendance at Trials loses money afterAMCA costs.

Now it’s up to you to TELL US what you want by e email or atsigning on.

HR COSTSIf we do a monthly Newsletter post is £6 pa and print about the same

– that’s the membership fee gone, but we have other basic items tocover – stationery, punch cards, affiliation fees, wear and tear on kitetc. At the next Committee Meeting we will have to decide on whatto increase to keep the club in the excellent financial state it is in.Membership fee £12, Trials Entry fee currently £12 adult and £8schoolboy, Practice Trial fee £10. Once again we seek your opinionsTELL US YOURS – IF YOU DON’T YOU’RE CONTENT EITHER WAY!

RAFFLE PRIZESThe caravan holds 3 prizes unclaimed at camping weekend, they arefor Adrian Beech, Les Castle and John Charman, if not they will beraffled again or drunk!

ON THE NEWSLETTEROne Club that still has a printed version gets members to collect theircopy at the next event, those not collected are then posted. It meansa delay of a couple of weeks but would result in significant savings –and results will already be on the website.

THE REVERSE TRIAL – CONCLUSIONS? 5TH AugustThis was an idea by Mike which Ian agreed to run, needless to sayMike went to do an event elsewhere and left us with the finer pointslike how to organise! Most riders I spoke to thought it was a goodidea providing 20 sections ridden twice but there were many BUTS!Problems with later entries, getting those impatient early finishers

Page 3: August 2012 Horsham Riders News

away. Setting out : the gates need to be visible both directions, begins and ends and punch location sorted, and card control …….Good job Elaine stepped in to sort out who had what. How did they get on, I asked Ian J once lap 3 was under way – chaotiche said …. One rider started at section 10 and still did the section fromthe last route, another didn’t find a begins and started in the middleetc etc. I think we’ll try again but clear instructions will be needed forthe marking team, the riders and start and finish times. A longdiscussion on this topic is assured at the next Committee Meeting.Tom H said that a Hants club always ran their club trials this way, theyhad no markers stapled to trees, begins and ends were reversible onwires, but he did say entries were low and admitted that if a rider wascoming the other way in a section you just waited for him to finish.

My conclusions (at this point) are :· Set up – Combine with a one route trial and no markers

behind trees· Begins/Ends – Different colour flags, no signs· Punches moved in break by team· Time limits – Laps 1 & 2 Start 10 am – Finish 12.30· Time limits – Laps 3 & 4 Start 1 pm – Finish 3.30 pm

At finish times the course is closed and scores will have any sectionnot ridden taken as 5. I bet that starts an argument!

REVERSE REPORT Mannings Heath, 5th August 2012The Indian Team had a job on their hands setting this one out soanticipating foul weather they marked it easy particularly the blueroute with a halfway score of 10. The Indians comprise the mostexperienced riders, Chairman Ian, Brian B, Eric S, Paul B and Ian J –but Ian No. 1 got worried when a thunder clap at 9.15 only heraldeda minor shower, from then on and all day the course was dry, only thevans slipped attempting the main track.

A different story as riders arrived; rain, hail as big as tennis balls!,buckets filling in 2 minutes, flooded roads. Jackie A had taken a videoto show me, it lasted 20 seconds – Oh! She says the battery ran out.Instructions for the event were displayed at signing on, it wasobviously inadequate as it led to many queries, especially from JohnY and Kevin M who enjoyed winding me up and concluded - it’s thesame difference then. Duncan Archer made a comeback after a yearor two but his newish Gas Gas was boiling over and he only did one

Page 4: August 2012 Horsham Riders News

section then 3 laps running round with his lad, reminding him hewasn’t a member he reckons his entry will pay for it – 3 months of theyear left so that’s OK.

Ian J had taken a 1947 Ariel from his ancient collection but couldn’tride as the tank was leaking – it was very rattley but that’s how helikes them. Adrian and Mick D commented “that bike reminds me ofyou Dick” – “it’s very old, noisy, smokes a lot and leaks!”. On hearingthat Ian Mac said we’ll call you Ariel now! The team went out and putthe punches on the other end of the sections when required – Iwonder how the bloke going the other way managed. Nigel and Elainecollected the two cans of petrol they’d left behind at the campingweekend, it may have been well stale but the bikes went OK. Adrian’sshoulder problem allowed him to ride, he only ventured on yellows soended up equalling ITMA (John Y).

Whites had a good entry with Steve F in front of new member Andy D

who levelled with Mick Huskinson. So Tony Flegg was not 1st HR buta good few marks in front of Ed C. Tommy B only 5 behind Ed is goingwell progressing up this enlarged white group – keep it up!A surprisingly small Blue group had a very easy time, Sam A droppingan average of 1 per lap to end on 4, Tom H on 8 and Tim H on 10.Ian was the only one who demonstrated the difficulties of the coursewhich he’d set out, probably the lone rider going the right way!

Yellows were led by Joe A on 7 with Adrian and John Y losing 11, whileBob C and Mick D led a group into the 20’s, so there were tricky bitsout there as Rob E will tell you – he found a lot of them.

Grandson of Eric, Jack T, only lost 16 on reds but Joel C was wellbehind on 44 to the dismay of his grandfather Bob. Elaine didn’t evenlook weary after losing 55 ahead of Emily who just smiles, but whenyou look at the half way reds had it the hardest with a 34, well doneall.

The team were a bit thin on the ground clearing up but we were allcomplete by 3.30.

Thanks to the Indian Team for sticking their necks out and bringinggood luck with the weather.

ROAD RIDEOUTWith the promise of fine weather for the Sunday ride out I monitoredthe phone on Saturday like an expectant teenager, ready to marshallthe hoards of Horsham Riders with final instructions. Steve Parkerrang, he was going to a wedding and was unable to predict hiscondition early the next morning ….. and the rest from CampingWeekend? Perhaps it was the beer talking.

He made it, (red eyed) and Gordon B and has mate too. Set out at 8am in fine sunshine, a bash down the 272 and stop of the café for theslimmers option – on round Winchester and Salisbury, we only got lostonce. A B road detour led to some fine bike handling skills asovertaking whilst going into dark overhanging trees we were present-ed with a series of mountain like hairpins (the Buell’s brakes areexcellent!)

The Pre 65 scramble was just east of Wincanton set on a half bowl ofa hill side with Glastonbury Tor in the distance. They pack the racesin one after another so an almost constant din! Mostly Maico’s, someAJS/Triumph/BSA etc, even a couple of Gas Gas trail bikes. The usualpile ups etc and baking hot with no shade. Some in our party wentfor a second helping of the slimmers’ option, including curry chips, aculinary offering – visually best described as a dog’s navarone. ThePA announced some nit had left his lights on, which we smirked at.Luckily when it was time to go the Buell still had enough batter tochug over!

A fine run back, missed a few turnings here and there and onlymurdered a million bugs but a good day out ….. next year you shouldtry it!Tim
