The report called out thegovernment of VenezuelanPresident Hugo Chavez formaintaining "its economic, fi-nancial, and diplomatic coop-eration with Iran as well aslimited military related agree-ments."

Growing antagonism be-tween Washington and Cara-cas in 2010 led both countriesto withdraw their ambassa-dors.

MANILA (AFP) - Tens of thousands battled neck-deepfloods in the Philippines Tuesday as Typhoon Saola con-tinued to bring heavy rains, with the death toll from thestorm rising to eight, officials said. Heavy downpoursbattered parts of the country for the third day in a row, forcing the evacuation of more than 145,000 people, saidcivil defence chief Benito Ramos. He warned that the badweather would last for at least two more days as thefloods rose in coastal areas just outside Manila. Al-though Typhoon Saola did not directly hit the Philip-pines, its massive rain has slowed down as it movedaway, prolonging its effects over the northern portionsof the archipelago, said Ramos. Saola was headingslowly northward to Taiwan, packing maximum sus-tained winds of 120 kilometres (74 miles) an hour nearits centre, state weather bureau said. SYDNEY (AFP) - A surferwas bitten by a shark in Aus-tralia on Tuesday before escap-ing to safety, police said.

South Australian police saidthe 48-year-old man was surf-ing at a beach at Streaky Bay,a town on the country's south-ern coast, in mid-afternoonwhen he was bitten on the armby a shark.

"The man has been taken toStreaky Bay hospital with non-life threatening injuries," po-lice said in a statement.

It is not known what kind ofshark was involved in the latest

attack but sharks are a commonfeature of Australian waters.

While fatal attacks are rare, experts say the average numberof attacks in Australia -- about15 a year, with at least onebeing fatal -- have increased inline with population growthand the popularity of watersports.

(AFP) - Twitter has comeunder fire for its handling ofthe account of a British jour-nalist critical of US broad-caster NBC's Olympicscoverage, with their commer-cial ties under the spotlight.

Guy Adams, the Los Ange-les correspondent for The In-dependent newspaper, tweetedhis outrage over NBC's deci-sion to delay broadcasting Fri-day's opening ceremony inorder to catch the primetimeUS audience.

But he was suspended fromTwitter for publishing theemail account of a high-rank-ing NBC executive.

Twitter and NBC have whatthe companies say is a strate-gic, non-financial partnershipfor online content during theOlympics, but media analystssaid the fact that Twitter

alerted NBC of Adams's criti-cism had raised concerns.

"This is the inevitable re-sult of what happens when wesafeguard our free-speech pro-tections to private corpora-tions," said Dan Kennedy, aNortheastern University jour-nalism professor who writes amedia blog.

"In the new interdependentmedia environment, your rightto speak and write freely ex-tends only as far as someoneelse's business interests,"Kennedy told AFP, question-ing whether Twitter had pro-vided impartial mediacoverage.

Jeff Jarvis, a City Univer-sity of New York journalismprofessor, made the same pointabout how journalists andcompanies should operate insocial media.

HONG KONG (AFP) - Scores ofendangered reptiles including tur-tles and a python that were smug-gled into Hong Kong will bereturned to their native Philippineson Wednesday, officials said.

A 22-year-old man is servinga six-week prison sentence forsmuggling the 105 reptiles intothe city packed in plastic contain-ers inside his checked-in luggageon June 14, the officials said.

The 39 Philippine pond tur-tles, 46 Southeast Asian box tur-tles, 19 Mindanao water monitorlizards and one reticulatedpython required specialist carebefore they could be shippedhome.

"Many of the animals whenthey arrived were underweightand dehydrated and so they re-quired treatment," KadoorieFarm and Botanic Garden headof fauna conservation Gary Ades

said.adding most of them had re-covered.

Trade in the reptiles is re-stricted under the Convention onInternational Trade in Endan-gered Species of Wild Fauna andFlora (CITES), although it islegal to keep them as pets inHong Kong.

"By returning these reptiles totheir native range, we can sustainpopulations in the wild,"Kadoorie Farm conservation of-ficer Paul Crow said.

Hong Kong endangeredspecies protection officer AlfredWong said the reptiles mostlikely would have entered the petmarket.

Trafficking in pond turtles ispunishable by a six-year prisonterm and a million-peso ($23,000)fine in the Philippines, but author-ities say they lack resources toproperly enforce the law.

The19-year-old American-born fighter -- who quali-fied for Trinidad throughhis mother -- lost 16-6 toTurkish battler FerhatPerlivan, but had littlegood to say after hisbrief moment in theOlympic spotlight. "Theproblem with amateurboxing is it's tag box-ing," said light flyweight Suarez. "He was throwing slap punches, getting points. Hewould have beaten me in a game of tag but not in a boxing match." Suarez, who wasTrinidad's only boxer at the Games, made fun of his opponent and said it highlightedwhat was wrong with the amateur ranks. "I thought it was bullshit. It's amazing, theseOlympic rules. I was only lightly slapping him on the side of his head and he wasfalling to the floor, and it was me who got docked a point," he said. He didn't want tofight with me or hang with me and I would have beaten him in a fight. There was noway I was going to get seven points in the final round."
