The Audubon Center of the North Woods (ACNW) is located on Grindstone Lake in east-central Minnesota. Our unique location puts us in a transition zone where several habitats are present, creating outstanding birding opportunities.

Through preservation and dedicated, responsible land management efforts over the last 45 years, our property contains old growth white and red pine groves, old growth northern hardwood forests, multi-aged conifer stands, birch and aspen stands, tall-grass prairie, oak savanna, shrub carr, wetlands and lake and stream habitats.

Our 535-acre nature sanctuary lies on the east shoreline of Grindstone Lake, a 154 ft. deep, 528-acre oligotrophic lake. We also own an 80-acre parcel near Finlayson, MN that represents one of the best wetlands in the area. The avian results are that these habitats create the conditions where over 200 bird species have been recorded!

Happy birding to you!

Abundance codes are defined as follows: C = Common -- present, relatively easy to find U = Uncommon -- observed, may be difficult to find O = Occasional -- may or may not be present in any year R = Rare -- has occurred at least once, may or may not be expected to recur
