Audition Requirements

Page 2: Audition Packet - storage.googleapis.com vie Page of Mary Poppins. Audition Packet. IMPORTANT DATES. Wednes day, October 5th, 201 6, 6:30 pm. …

Due to the large number of students auditioning, we have a few important guidelines that must be followed in order to keep auditions running smoothly.

1) ALL applicants must complete the following: The Parent Volunteer Form and the Audition Application (with photo!), each signed by a parent. These must be turned in to the school office by 3:30 Friday , October 1 4 th . This will allow us to organize the auditions ahead of time so that they can proceed smoothly. Be sure to CIRCLE the part you want to read ON PAGE 4 of this packet . No late or incomplete applications will be accepted!

2) 2rd through 5th Graders – On the day of your audition, report to the outside lunch area as soon as you are dismissed from school. You will be checked in and confirmed for your audition. You must stay in the lunch area until you are called for your audition. You may only leave the area to use a restroom, with permission. You will not be allowed on the playground, in the library, or computer lab. Parents are encouraged to wait with you in the lunch area, but will not be permitted to watch auditions.

3) Bring a drink, an after-school snack, a book, homework, a deck of cards or some other quiet form of entertainment and a sweatshirt or jacket. The lunch area is a protected area, but can get cold in the late afternoon.

4) Bring all sample script sheets. Be prepared to read one of the parts from the attached sample scripts (Choose your favorite character!). It MUST be the same part you checked on the information sheet (on page 4) that you turned in. You do not need to memorize the lines, but it is best if you have rehearsed them several times so you are familiar with your part and you can do your best! You will not need to follow stage directions for your audition. NO MAKE-UP, COSTUMES OR PROPS ARE ALLOWED.

5) Be prepared to sing a song (max 1 minute) that will demonstrate your singing ability. See the attached song list for approved songs to choose from. You will be reading and singing at the same audition. You will not be auditioning twice.

6) After your audition: If your parents are not at school, be prepared to phone them to come pick you up immediately. If you are a YMCA student, you must return to the YMCA immediately after your audition.

The narrator of the story, and is a good friend to Mary Poppins. An “everyman”, Bert has many occupations, including hurdy-gurdy player, sidewalk artist, and chimney sweep. Bert watches over the children as well as the goings on in Cherry Tree Lane. He has charm, speaks with a Cockney accent and is a song-and-dance man.

Mary Poppins:Jane and Michael Banks' new nanny. She is extraordinary and strange, neat and tidy, delightfully vain yet particular, and sometimes a little frightening but always exciting. She is practically perfect in every way and always means what she says. Precision and diction is key.

JaneThe high-spirited daughter of Mr. and Mr. Banks, is bright and precocious but can be willful and inclined to snobbishness. MichaelThe cute and cheeky son of Mr. and Mrs. Banks. Excitable and naughty, he adores his father and tries to be like him. Both he and Jane misbehave in order to get the attention of their parents.

Winifred BanksGeorge's wife and Jane and Michael's mother. A former actress, she is loving and distracted homemaker who is busy trying to live up to her husband's desire to only associate with "the best people" as well as be the model wife and mother. She has great warmth and simplicity to her tone.

Miss AndrewGeorge Bank's overbearing and scary childhood nanny, brought in to care for the children after Mary Poppins leaves. With her bottle of nasty-tasting brimstone and treacle to keep naughty children in line, she is a bully who only knows one way of doing things - her way. She has a heaviness and gruffness to her voice.

AUDITION SCRIPT ONE: Bert and Mary Poppins

MARY POPPINS: Oh. So you are a sweep now, are you?

BERT: The best view in the world, eh? And who gets to see it? The birds, the stars, and the chimney sweeps. Nothing to beat it, eh?

MARY POPPINS: Bert… (MARY POPPINS stands and picks up her umbrella and bag.)

BERT: Oh, you’re going then?

MARY POPPINS: The wind has changed.

BERT: But they’re good kids, Mary.

MARY POPPINS: Would I be bothering with them if they weren’t? But I can’t help them if they wont let me, and there’s no one so hard to teach as the child who knows everything.

BERT: So?

MARY POPPINS: So, they have to do the next bit on their own.

BERT: Good bye, Mary Poppins. Don’t stay away too long.

MARY POPPINS: Cheerio, Bert. Keep an eye on them for me.

JANE: It’s not fair! You’re going out, and we get left on our own!MARY POPPINS: You’ve plenty of toys to play with.JANE: I don’t want to. They’re boring!MARY POPPINS: They might say the same about you.MICHAEL: Why does Daddy get so cross?JANE: Fathers are supposed to look after their children, not yell at them all the time.MARY POPPINS: Maybe, but have you asked yourself who looks after the fathers when things go wrong?MICHAEL: The mothers, I suppose.MARY POPPINS: Not the children?JANE: Wouldn’t that be rather upside-down?(MARY POPPINS continues to primp herself ready for her “evening out”)MARY POPPINS: Sometimes families are upside-down, for a while anyway.JANE: I don’t want to be an upside-down family. I wish I could run away.MICHAEL: Why don’t you? Somebody might adopt you. JANE: But you’d miss me.MICHAEL: No, I wouldn’t. I could have your toys.JANE: No, you could not!MICHAEL: Yes, I could, and I jolly well would!JANE: Give that to me! (JANE seizes one arm of the toy while MICHAEL pulls the other, tearing VALNTINE’S arm in the proess.) Now look what you’ve done!

AUDITION SCRIPT 3 –Winifred and Miss Andrew

WINIFRED: Miss Andrew! It’s so lovely to meet you at last! I do hope you had a good journey

(The terrifyingg MISS ANDREW drops her bag and advances into the room with a covered birdcage.)

MISS ANDREW: It was thoroughly unpleasant. I never enjoy travel. You must be poor George’s wife. Your flower beds are disgracefully untidy! Take my advice: Plant evergreens. Or better still, have nothing there at all, just a plain cement courtyard!

WINIFRED: But dear Miss Andrew, I am so fond of flowers.

MISS ANDREW: Then you are a very silly woman. Where did George go?

WINIFRED: He…. (looks around) I’m afraid he had...an urgent appointment.

MISS ANDREW: For which no doubt he was late as usual. (looks about with a sneer.) It’s not much of a house, is it?

WINIFRED: We like it.

MISS ANDREW: Then it doesn’t take a lot to keep you happy. Look at the dust! There! And there! Filth!!

WINIFRED: Well, we are rather short-staffed at the moment.

MISS ANDREW: Hasn’t anyone ever cleaned those curtains?!?

WINIFRED: Well, I...um...

MARY POPPINS SONG LYRICS

CHIM CHIM CHER-EE - Stop at :55Chim chim-i-ney, chim chim-i-ney, chim chim cher-ee, a sweep is as lucky as lucky can be.Chim chim-i-ney, chim chim-i-ney, chim chim cher-oo, good luck will rub off when I shake hands with you.Or blow me a kiss, and that’s lucky too!Now as the ladder of life has been strung, you may think a sweep’s on the bottom-most rung.Though I spends me time in the ashes and smoke, in this whole wide world, theres no ‘appier bloke.Chim chim-i-ney, chim chim-i-ney, chim chim cher-ee, a sweep is as lucky as lucky can be.Chim chim-i-ney, chim chim-i-ney, chim chim cher-oo, good luck will rub off when I shake hands with you.

SPOONFUL OF SUGAR - Stop at 1:07Spoken - In every job that must be done there is an element of fun. You find the fun and snap! The job’s a game. And ev’ry task you undertake becomes a piece of cake.A lark! A spree! I’t s very clear to see…....that a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down, the medicine go down, medicine go down.Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down, in a most delightful way!A robin feathering his nest has very little time to rest, while gathering his bits of twine and twigThough quite intent in persuit, he has a merry toon to toot!He knows, a song, will move the job along!

FEED THE BIRDS - Stop at 1:26Early each day to the steps of St. Paul’s the little old bird woman comes. In her own special way to the people she calls: Come buy my bags full of crumbs.Come feed the little birds, show them you care, and you’ll be glad if you do.Their young ones are hungry, their nest are so bare. All it takes is tuppence from you.Feed the birds, tuppence a bag, tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag.Feed the birds, that’s what she cries, while overhead, the birds fill the skies.

LET’S GO FLY A KITE - Stop at :50With tuppence for paper and strings, you can have your own set of wings. With you feet on the ground you’re a bird in flight, with your fist holding tight to the string of your kite. Oh…..Let’s go fly a kite, up to the highest height.Lets go fly a kite and send it soaring up through the atmosphere, up where the air is clear, Oh, let’s go fly a kite!

SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS - Stop at :45It’s Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, even though the sound of it is something quite atroious, if you say is loud enough, you’ll always sound precocious. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!Um diddle iddle iddle um diddle ay Um diddle iddle iddle um diddle ay.Um diddle iddle iddle um diddle ay Um diddle iddle iddle um diddle ay.Cuz I was afraid to speak when I was just a lad, Me father gave me nose a tweak and told me I was bad.But then one day I learned a word that saved me achin’ noseThe biggest word ya ever heard and this is how it goes!Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, even though the sound of it is something quite atroious,
