For Friday’s individual auditions, please prepare the following: a 60-second memorized monologue from any 20th Century play of your choice and 32 bars of music from a musical theatre song of your choice.

The two pieces can be either signed, spoken/sung, or both. Make sure you bring the appropriate sheet music to give to the accompanist or the appropriate musical track if you’re signing.

You do not need to prepare anything for Saturday’s dance audition. Please wear closed-toe shoes and movement- appropriate clothing. You may also want to bring something to drink. Singing and acting callbacks will follow a short break after the dance auditions have concluded.

Description about the play:

Family Friendly dance production that address issues that we face out in the world; bully, fear, death, race, gen-der identity, dreams, and equality through inspiration found in children’s story and poetry books. is production combines music, American Sign Language, and poetry with dance to express these themes.

Please to be sure to wear appropriate dance attire.

You do not need to prepare anything for this audition. You may also want to bring water.

2) Read descriptions and then decide which role you want to audition for.

Description about the play:

This sensational drama features Troy Maxson, a former star of the Negro baseball leagues who now as a garbage man in 1957 Pittsburgh. Excluded as a black man from the major leagues during his prime, Troy’s bitterness takes its toll on his relationships with his wife and his son, who now wants his own chance to play ball.

Descriptions of each role:

TROY MAXSON– Male, African-American, 45 – 55. A “larger than life” character both in size and spirit. Troy is a hard-working, proud man who demands more out of life. He loves telling “tall tales” to his friends and family. Troy struggles to provide for his family while working as a sanitation worker. A former baseball player in the Negro Leagues, Troy is resentful over the racism that prevented him from playing in the major leagues.

JIM BONO, Troy’s friend: – Male, African-American, 45 – 55. Troy’s best friend for over thirty years. e two met while serving a stretch in prison. Bono, as he is called, works alongside Troy hauling garbage for the sanitation department. Bono admires Troy and sees him as a role model. Bono warns Troy to end the extramarital air he’s having or risk losing Rose and their friendship.

ROSE, Troy’s wife: – Female, African-American, 40 – 45. Troy’s wife and mother of his second child, Cory. Rose is a forty-three year-old African American housewife who volunteers at her church regularly and loves her family. Rose’s request that Troy and Cory build a fence in their small, dirt backyard comes to represent her desire to keep her loved-ones close to her love. Unlike Troy, Rose is a realist, not a romantic longing for the by- gone days of yore. She has high hopes for her son, Cory and sides with him in his wish to play football. Rose’s acceptance of Troy’s illegitimate daughter, Raynell, as her own child, exemplifies her compassion.

LYONS, Troy’s oldest son by previous marriage: – Male, African-American, late 30 – 35. Troy’s son from a previous relationship. Lyons is an aspiring Jazz musician who has no regular job. He admits that music is the only thing which gives him purpose and enables him to control his anger. Lyons grew up without his father’s presence, as Troy was serving time in prison. He frequently borrows money from Troy and vows to pay him back.

GABRIEL, Troy’s brother: – Male, African-American, 45 – 55. Troy’s brother. Gabriel was a soldier in the Second World War, during which he received a head injury that required a metal plate to be surgically implanted into his head. Because of the physical damage and his service, Gabriel receives checks from the government that Troy used in part to buy the Maxson’s home where the play takes place. Gabriel wanders around the Maxson family’s neighborhood carrying a basket and singing. He often thinks he is not a person, but the angel Gabriel who opens the gates of heaven with his trumpet for Saint Peter on Judgment Day. Gabriel exudes a child-like exuberance and a need to please.

CORY, Troy and Rose’s son: – Male, African-American, over 18 to play 16 – 18. Troy and Rose’s teenage son. Cory is a high school senior and a talented athlete. When a college football recruiter shows an interest in Cory, Troy refuses to see him. He also won’t allow his son to play football any longer. Cory is intimated by his Father and wonders if Troy even likes him.

RAYNELL, Troy’s daughter: – Girl, African-American, 7 and up to play 7 years old. Troy’s illegitimate daughter. Raynell is taken in and raised by Rose after her mother dies in childbirth. Raynell has heard stories about Cory,

and meets him on the day of Troy’s funeral. e pair sing a song together which Troy has sung throughout his life. Actress does not have to be an amazing singer, but should be able to sing sweetly.
