We are delighted to offer The Wood Engraver, a recently rediscovered early masterwork by Nicolai Fechin. Painted in 1924 shortly after Fechin and his family arrived in New York, the painting depicts William G. Watt, an engraver and graphic artist and an Associate of the National Academy of Design, at work in his Stroudsburg, PA, studio. This extraordinary portrait exhibits the strong, confident brushwork typical of Fechin’s best work. The Wood Engraver won The Thomas R. Proctor Prize for portraiture in the 1924 exhibition at the National Academy of Design.
