Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome is considered a rare condition and so EDS sufferers are known as medical zebras.

Last week Annabelle won the Tower FM ‘Child of Courage’ Award

We are the Griffin family from Bury and have been raising awareness of a rare disease Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) after our four-year-old daughter was diagnosed with the condition.

Despite having no family history of the

genetic illness, we received the devastating diagnosis that our daughter Annabelle, known as AJ, has the Vascular type Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome just before Christmas last year, after months of in-depth testing. Vascular Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (VEDS) is life threatening and incurable, it is the most serious variation of the condition, weakening the collagen in the tissues of her body and making her prone to possible spontaneous arterial or organ rupture. Vascular Ehlers-Danlos is extremely rare with approximately only 300 sufferers currently diagnosed in the UK. To help raise awareness of Vascular EDS, we launched the online campaign ‘Annabelle’s Challenge’ www.annabelleschallenge.co.uk charting our family’s daily battle to keep Annabelle safe, whilst also giving her a normal life as possible.
