7:30 - 9:00 P.M. Dinner Program Raffle Drawing Live Auction Costume Contest

Dear Friends,

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the fourth annual Hard Hat & Black Tie Dinner and Auction. Tonight we celebrate and support the great work that Habitat for Humanity Portland/Metro East is doing to build strong, vibrant communities.

Because of our generous sponsors, every dollar we raise tonight will go directly toward building homes in Portland. This means you have the opportunity to give local, hardworking families a hand up, helping them build and buy their own homes. Your generosity tonight will help hundreds of children in the Portland area have a clean and safe place to sleep at night. It will also provide the foundation for building a stable family environment.

Thank you to those who have graciously donated their time and effort to help plan and make this event a success.

Please raise those paddles high and often, and together we can meet Habitat’s goal of making the dreams of homeownership for worthy Portland families come true.

In Partnership,

Paul George, Board Chair Habitat for Humanity Portland/Metro East

BEN JONES AND FRIENDS, Entertainment

Growing up in Detroit, Michigan, bass virtuoso and multi-instrumentalist Ben Jones began to learn the ways of the musical world as a very young man. He started out as a drummer and he tried his hand at many instruments in his late father’s music store, ultimately settling on the bass. Ben has toured with The Neville Brothers, B.B. King, Anita Baker and many others.

KELLY RUSSELL, Auctioneer

A 2005 graduate from Worldwide College of Auctioneering, Kelly is currently a member in good standing with the National Auctioneers Association (NAA), served as President for the Oregon Auctioneers Association (OAA), and has completed the designations of Benefit Auctioneer Specialist (BAS), Certified Estate Specialist (CES), and the national designation from the Certified Auctioneers Institute (CAI). With her background in Theater Technology, she is an energetic performer who is comfortable in front of audiences of all sizes and enjoys interacting with bidders.

REGGIE AQUI, Emcee This is Reggie’s third year emceeing the Hard Hat & Black Tie Dinner and Auction. Reggie anchors Newchannel 8 at 4 weekdays on KGW. He came to KGW from CNN in Atlanta, where he worked for CNN International anchoring breaking news from the Japan Tsunami to the “Arab Spring” uprising. Portland brings him closer to his brothers and sisters in his native Hawaii.

THE HUSSEIN/DAWOOD FAMILY

In 2006, Abdulnaser Hussein had to quit his job with General Electric and leave his home in Iraq to escape the hands of Al-Qaeda, who threatened his family.

“Not a night passed where I didn’t fear for my wife and children’s lives,” said Abdulnaser. “This was no way to live, so I moved my family to Syria to try to find security.”

In Syria, the family faced more hardship. They moved from apartment to apartment trying to find a place they could afford. Abdulnaser, his wife, Suhair, and their five children were finally able to immigrate to America in 2010, ready for a new, promising beginning.

Abdulnaser found a job as an assembler at a manufacturing plant, but even working over 40 hours a week he was not able to afford a suitable place for his family. They currently live in a two-bedroom, one-bath house, with mold and bad plumbing. The limited space makes it hard for his five children to focus on their studying.

Their oldest son is 18 years old and wants to become a computer engineer. Their oldest daughter who is 16 years old hopes to pursue medicine. With such ambitious children, Abdulnaser and Suhair knew they needed to find a home that would provide more space for everyone to pursue their dreams.

They found out about Habitat through a friend, applied and were ecstatic when they learned they were selected into the homeownership program. Construction on their home has begun at Trillium Court, Habitat’s newest site in the Hillsdale neighborhood.

“All I ever wanted was a safe place for my family to call home,” said Abdulnaser. “Now Habitat has given us a chance. I feel grateful and thankful that my only wish in life, which is my children’s happiness, will now be achieved.”

Jimmy and Rosalynn, 89 and 87 respectively, are still going strong and are ready for you to jump right in to share the work, the energy and the love!
