Attitudes and Behaviors
● Attitude doesn’t always predict a behavioro Some people change behavior and attitude to be
appropriate in a situation● Self monitoring- when people override their
behavior in accordance with others expectationso High self monitoring will result in observing situations
and other people’s behaviors for clues on how to acto Low self monitoring will result in action on ones own
attitudes with great consistency, showing little regard for situational clues and constraints.
Attitudes and Behavior
● LaPierre traveled through the U.S during the 1930s with a chinese couple
● They were refused service at 1 out of 250 hotels and restaurants
● 6 months later he sent out a survey- most places claimed they would not serve Chinese.
● Moral of the story: Attitudes are not reliable predictors of actual behavior!
