Page 3: ATTITUDE - soberworxmembers.com€¦ · Attitude def. at∙ti∙tude / ˈa‐tə‐ˌtüd (Noun) a feeling or opinion about something, especially when manifested in behavior; a physical,

Attitudedef. at∙ti∙tude / ˈa‐tə‐ˌtüd(Noun) a feeling or opinion about something, especially when manifested in behavior; a physical, mental & emotional proclamation.From Latin “aptitūdini” meaning “aptitude”. Example: “I don’t like your attitude!”(behavior)Example: Putting your hands on your hips    and rolling your eyes expresses one kind of attitude, while kneeling with your palms together expresses a very different one.

AttitudeDo you know what importance a change of “Attitude” plays in the success of our recovery?

Let’s take a quick look at a few quotes and see what the authors of the Big Book say about the importance of our “Attitude”.

Page 5: ATTITUDE - soberworxmembers.com€¦ · Attitude def. at∙ti∙tude / ˈa‐tə‐ˌtüd (Noun) a feeling or opinion about something, especially when manifested in behavior; a physical,

Attitude“The great fact is just this, and nothing less: That we have had deep and effective spiritual experiences which have revolutionized our whole attitudetoward life, toward our fellows and toward God's universe.” (p.25)

Are they saying one benefit of having a deep and effective spiritual experience is a complete change in our whole attitudetoward life?  (i.e. a psychic change)

Attitude“But this man still lives, and is a free man. He does not need a bodyguard nor is he confined. He can go anywhere on this earth where other free men may go without disaster, provided he remains willing to maintain a certain simple attitude.” (p.26)

This says our ability to “go anywhere” “without disaster” depends on our attitude.  How important is attitude?

Attitude“The doctor said: "You have the mind of a chronic alcoholic. I have never seen one single case recover, where that state of mind existed to the extent that it does in you…"Is there no exception?” Yes, replied the doctor, there is. Exceptions to cases such as yours have been occurring since early times.  Here and there, once in a while, alcoholics have had what are called vital spiritual experiences. …  (Continued)

AttitudeThey appear to be in the nature of huge emotional displacements and rearrangements.  Ideas, emotions, and attitudeswhich were once the guiding forces of the lives of these men are suddenly cast to one side, and a completely new set of conceptions and motives begin to dominate them.”(p.27)To have a vital spiritual experience, does Dr. Jung clarify we must let go of our old ideas, emotions and attitudes?

Page 9: ATTITUDE - soberworxmembers.com€¦ · Attitude def. at∙ti∙tude / ˈa‐tə‐ˌtüd (Noun) a feeling or opinion about something, especially when manifested in behavior; a physical,

Attitude“As a celebrated American statesman put it, "Let's look at the record." Here are thousands of men and women, worldly indeed. They flatly declare that since they have come to believe in a Power greater than themselves, to take a certain attitude toward that Power, and to do certain simple things, there has been a revolutionary change in their way of living and thinking. (Continued)

AttitudeIn the face of collapse and despair, in  the face of the total failure of their human resources, they found that a new power, peace, happiness, and sense of direction flowed into them.” (p.50)

They stated 3 requirements for success:1.  Belief in a Power Greater than themselves,2.  Taking a certain attitude toward God, and3.  Doing certain simple things. (i.e. 12 Steps)

Attitude“Step Eleven suggests prayer and meditation. We shouldn’t be shy on this matter of prayer. Better men than we are using it constantly. It works, if we have the proper attitude and work at it.” (p.85)

Here are 2 conditions for prayer to work. The first is to have the proper attitude!With what attitude does the Big Book say “you cannot fail”?  Let’s take a look

Attitude“We found the Great Reality deep down within us. … If our testimony helps sweep away prejudice, enables you to think honestly, encourages you to search diligently within yourself, then, if you wish, you can join us on the Broad Highway.  With this attitude you cannot fail, the consciousness of your belief is sure to come to you.” (p.55)Would the proper attitude be the one with which “you cannot fail”?

Have your attitudes and outlook on life changed since you came to AA?  How so?

Have you let go of the old ideas, emotions, or attitudes that stand in the way of your usefulness to God and your fellows?

In summary, does the Big Book say our success or failure at continuous recovery will depend, in part, upon our attitude?
