Welcome to the WHCA/WiCAL Virtual Fall Convention & Expo. It would be a vast understatement to say “2020 has not been the year we expected.” This year has been infiltrated by unprecedented events, new challenges, and unforeseen obstacles, and further complicated by a harsh villain that has tried to attack the long term care community: COVID-19. However, Wisconsin’s long-term care Superheroes have continued to prove just how essential they are to our communities, our state, and most-importantly, the residents they care for. You, our Superheroes, have guarded and protected Wisconsin’s long-term care residents with unwavering strength and courage. WHCA/WiCAL could not be more proud of and grateful for Wisconsin’s long term care communities, and their Superhero caregivers and staff. The 2020 Virtual Fall Convention & Expo is all about you: the unsung LTC Superheroes. We see you, we hear you, we appreciate you, and we will continue to support you and advocate for you!

    You truly are our Superheroes!

Best Practices for Virtual Training that Engage Employees Laura Nolan The Division of Continuing Education and Community Engagement - University of Wisconsin, Green Bay

COVID-19 has catapulted to the forefront the need to teach virtually. With limited resources and the need for quality training, providers need to train staff in an effective virtual manor. In this session we will cover how to engage employees on a variety of platforms using the department approved trainings and your own communities’ curriculum. The training will review the Wisconsin Community-Based Care and Treatment Training Registry’s Distance Learning Policy and many other tools that allow you to teach employees in a variety of learning styles in an interactive way.

Session Objectives:• Learn which platforms are available for virtual training

    • Learn how to engage employees during interactive virtual training

Building To Save Lives: Environmental Infection ControlDavid R. Soens, PE, RA DHS: Life Safety Fire Authority Division of Quality Assurance

The continued prevalence of communicable diseases motivates a better understanding of how aspects of the built environment can reinforce an infection control plan and improve long-term success.

Aging facilities built in the 1960’s, 70’, and 80’s typically were not designed to address today’s communicable diseases. Understand how bringing the right disciplines together can create a safe, healing environment today through enhanced architectural and mechanical systems.

Session Objectives:• Explore common building features that can significantly

    improve overall safety

    • Learn how building design features can motivate appropriate behaviors

    • Understand engineering controls that can isolate a known hazard

Suggested Audience: NHA, AL, Infection Control

CARES Act Fund Management and ComplianceMike Cheek AHCA/NCAL

Since March, many LTC providers have accepted relief funding in the form of CARES Act, PPP loan, etc. In the coming months, providers will need to demonstrate their lost revenue and additional expenses incurred due to COVID-19 to comply with and maintain accepted funds. This session is aimed at helping LTC providers navigate compliance and best practices related to reporting and accounting requirements for relief funds.

Session Objectives:• Understanding the requirements of the CARES Act/

Provider Relief Fund regarding provider responsibilities to demonstrate lost revenue and increased costs attributable to COVID-19

    • Learn how to develop best practices in accounting and record keeping related to Provider Relief Funds

    • Understanding how CARES Act funding may interact with PPP loans and any additional State Medicaid payments relating to COVID-19

Digital Marketing: More Important Now Than EverConnie Parsons IlluminAge Communication Partners

Almost seven months into the COVID-19 pandemic, the importance of virtual communications and online engagement is plainly apparent. Restricted visitation to our facilities has made it imperative that we engage with families and communities in other ways. Senior care communities who have been using social media to connect have seen an over 30% increase in online engagement, and small-town facilities have had stories go viral at the state and national level. Social media has also played a central role in staff retention and engagement—a greater challenge than ever these days. There has never been a more important time for facilities to use digital marketing, and to use it well. Use your website, social media, and online reputation management strategies to connect with key audiences.

Session Objectives:• Identify key communication platforms to reach target

    audiences

    • Develop a communication plan with messaging that engages

    • Have the tools to cultivate and respond to reviews

Human Resources Security Concerns When Terminating a Potentially Violent EmployeeTed Hayes M3 Insurance

The termination of an employee can be a stressful situation for the affected employee, your human resources department, and others in your organization. A threat of violence, perceived or real, can turn the termination process in to a dangerous situation quickly. By ensuring your organization has developed a plan to address the threats of violence, the chances of a termination resulting in injury (or even death) can be minimized or eliminated. This program addresses security controls to keep your staff safe before, during and after terminating an employee who displays threatening behavior.

Lifesaving Tips When Facing an Armed Intruder or Active ShooterTed Hayes M3 Insurance

Even with all of the violent incidents occurring in today’s world, your chances of being involved in an active shooter situation are slim; unfortunately, armed intruders and active shooter situations are occurring with greater frequency every year. Statistics indicate that a little more than 60% of active shooter situations are over within five (5) minutes – the shooter leaves the area, the shooter takes their own life (about 40%), or law enforcement/ a prepared citizen neutralizes the situation. Knowing exactly what to do during those few minutes may mean the difference between life and death for you, a coworker and many others in your building.

MDROsMegan Lasure WI State Laboratory of Hygiene and the WI Division of Public Health - HAI Prevention Program

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the landscape of healthcare delivery in Wisconsin and it intersects with the existing rise of multidrug resistant organisms (MDROs). Supply shortages of PPE, cohorting patients and staff, and the use of antibiotics will all complicate existing responses to MDRO transmission prevention.

Over the past three years the Wisconsin Division of Public Health’s Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAI) Prevention Program and Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene have increased their capacity to track and respond to MDROs that are considered Urgent Threats by CDC, including carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE), carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB), and Candida auris.

Understanding how these organisms spread and their prevalence in Wisconsin will help us to prevent the MDRO threat that may follow in the wake of COVID-19.

    • Discuss the challenges of using appropriate PPE for MDROs while meeting COVID-19 requirements
