Winter Break No school

School Resumes

January 8, 2019

Are you planning a family trip for the holidays? As you think about your ar-

rangements, we want to stress the importance of sending your child to school

every day possible. Every year, absences spike in the weeks before and after

the winter holiday as families squeeze in a few more vacation days. It’s time

to break that cycle. We know that just a few missed days here and there,

even if they’re excused absences, can add up to too much lost learning time

and put your child behind in school. This is as true in kindergarten as it is in

high school. Put simply, too many absences at any age can affect a student’s

chances for academic success and eventually for graduation.

We recognize that holidays are an important time for reconnecting with fami-

lies far away. The costs of plane tickets often influence when you want to

travel. But keep in mind the costs to your children’s education if they miss

too much school— and the message you will be sending about the im-

portance of attendance. Even if you’ve got a homework packet from the

teacher, it doesn’t make up for the interaction and learning that happens in

the classroom. Our teachers will be teaching, and our students will be learn-

ing, right up until vacation starts and the first day back. Our schools will be

hosting a special event on Tuesday, January 8, 2019, offering incentives, all

students who return on time will be eligible for a prize. You can help us con-

vey that message. This holiday season, give your children the gift of an educa-

tion and the habit of attendance.

Math: Upon return from Thanksgiving break, we will begin working on angle relationships. In our unit we will review classifying and naming angles and then move on to complementary, supplementary, adjacent, and vertical angles. We will continue to apply equations to solve angle problems. Students will continue to use the integer rules throughout the unit. All the math teachers do have a re-take policy and students are encouraged to take advantage of this policy.

If you are looking for stocking stuffers, school supplies would be great. Mechanical pencils, extra lead, erasers, dry erase markers, and extra notebooks often need to be replenished at this time. Teachers would appreciate boxes of Kleenex and disinfectant wipes.

Social Studies: We will be studying the Revolutionary War during the last days of November and all of Decem-ber. After Christmas break, we will begin studying the United States Constitution. We encourage you to check students' agenda books and Teacher Ease every night for updates on your child's progress. Enjoy your families during the holiday season!

GTT: Classes are wrapping up their furniture design pro-jects and will soon be working with a 3D modeling soft-ware called Autodesk Inventor. The 8th grade classes are in the middle of their mechanism builds and will attempt to make the mechanisms automated. Thank you!

Design and Modeling: Students will use all the skills and knowledge they have learned to create a therapeutic toy for a child with Cerebral Palsy. They will have to be creative as they design and build a prototype which will be tested by real kids with CP!

7th Grade teachers would like to wish everyone a Happy Holiday Season! Please remind your stu-

dents to keep reading over the Holiday break! Also, as we are starting to enter the cold and flu

season, if you could please continue to send box-es of tissues and hand sanitizer, the 7th Grade

teachers would really appreciate it!

GTT: Mr. Dicken’s 7th grade GTT classes are wrapping up their furniture design projects and will soon be working with a 3D modeling software called Autodesk Inven-tor. The 8th grade classes are in the middle of their mech-anism builds and will attempt to make the mechanisms automated.

Science: Classes will continue their study of Genetics.

We will be looking at Punnet squares and Pedigrees to fur-

ther their knowledge of Genetics. The Daphne Major

finches and the peppered moths of England and their ad-

aptations will be how we conclude our study of Genetics.

Students will take their book test the week just before we

start Winter break.

Medical Detectives: Students will put together every-

thing they have learned about vital signs, pathogens, diag-

noses, and the nervous system to solve a real life medical

mystery!

7th Grade 8th grade

Attention 8th grade parents! Now is the perfect time to get your school physicals done for the 9th grade. I would like for all 8th grade students to have their physicals completed by April 1st so I can get them to DHS before the end of the year. Get your appointments now, or even over Christ-mas break, and have your student turn it in to Nurse Ingold.

The North Ridge Builders Club has

several important projects taking

place during the month of Decem-

ber. We have the opportunity to

ring bells for the Salvation Army

with the Golden Kiwanis. Mrs.

Delzell will transport the students.

Permission slips will go out next

week. We are also collecting toys

for children in need. The toys will

be taken to Your Family Resource

Center (Women’s Shelter). Toy

ideas are: small games, books for

all ages, Barbies, handheld games,

Hot Wheel type cars, action fig-

ures, coloring books, DVD’s, puz-

zles, Bath and Body type items for

older girls, or any small gift you

can think of. We need our mem-

bers to bring their toy item or

items to our December 12th meet-

ing!! Our club will also be partici-

pating in the Wreaths Across

America Day on Saturday, Decem-

ber 15th. Builders Club members

will have an opportunity to help

place the wreaths at the Danville

National Cemetery on this day.

Thanks to our club members, fam-

ilies, friends, and the amazing

North Ridge staff, we surpassed

our goal of getting 200 wreaths

sponsored. We have 234 wreaths

sponsored so far!! Thank you to

everyone who sponsored a wreath

or multiple wreaths for the veter-

ans at our National Cemetery. Per-

mission slips for Wreaths Across

America Day were sent home at

our last meeting. Parents will need

to provide transportation for their

child, both to and from the ceme-

tery.

Builders Club also continues to be

in charge of our school’s paper

recycling. Also, please continue to

send in General Mills Box Tops for

Education!! Box Tops should be

sent in a baggie or envelope with

the student’s name on it. A con-

test/incentive will be announced

next semester. Students and staff

will receive a small treat for every

10 box tops turned in. Our club

also collected almost $100.00 for

Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF.

We sincerely appreciate all of your

support!!
