The death of Pope John Paul II has occasioned widespread
discussions about his own stand and theVaticans position regarding
a variety of subjects, from purely theological to social issues.
Completely lacking has been any reference to an issue of concern to
many, and especially to those interested in thesubjects of UFOs,
Life on other planets, and Extraterrestrials in general, and in
Zecharia Sitchins writingsin particular.
As it happene d, in April 2000, Sitchin enga ged in a pu blic
discussion of those very issues with a leadingtheologian of the
Vatican, Monsignor Corrado Balducci, during an international
conference held in Be llaria(Bimini) in Italy. The dialogue was
reported at the time on the Zecharia Sitchin web

report.

The H ebrew s cholar was meZe charia Sitchin: A researcher of
ancient civilizations, a biblical archaeologist, adescendant of
Abraham
The monsignor and I had almost met for such a dialogue t he
previous December, but it did not come about. This t ime we were
scheduled to meet in Bellaria, Italy, at a confe rence whose theme
was The M yst ery of Human Exis-tence. I arrived there with my wife
and a score of fans from the U .S.A., on March 31, scheduled to
addres s theaudience of over a thousand the next day. The monsignor
was nowhere in sight but he was there t he next morning tohear my
prese ntation. I drove the whole night f rom R ome to hear you, he
said.
Sitchins Presentation
M y t alk, ably t ranslated by my I talian editor Tuvia Fogel,
included a s lide presentation that added a pictorial dimensionto
the evidence f rom ancient t imes in support of S umerian texts, on
which my eight books based the followingconclusions:
We are not alonenot just in the vast universe , but in our own
solar sys tem. There is one more planet in our solarsystem,
orbiting beyond Pluto but nearing Earth periodically. Advanced Ext
raterres t rialst he Sumerians calledthem Anunnaki, the B ible Nef
ilimst arted to visit our planet some 450,000 years ago. And, some
300,000 years ago,they engaged in genet ic engineering to upgrade
Earths hominids and fashion Homo sapiens, the Adam. In that, t
heyacted as Emiss aries for the Universal CreatorGod.
T he D ia logue
We have much to talk about, M sgr. Balducci said to me as he
came f orward to congratulate me on my prese nta-
tion. I have great es teem for your scholarship, he said.
We returned to the hotel for lunch. Our table was surrounded in
a semi-circle by my American fans, intent on notmiss ing a word of
t he forthcoming dialogue. I n the hours-long session, Msgr.
Balducci outlined the positions he wasgoing to state, f rom a
prepared te xt, in his t alk the next day. While my approach was
based on physical evidence, his
was a purely Roman Catholic theological-philosophical one,
seeking the spiritual aspects. Yet, our conclusions con-verged.
Msgr. Balduccis Positions
On UFOs. There must be s omet hing in it. The hundreds and
thousands of eyewitnes s reports leave no roomfor denying that
there is a measure of truth in them, even allowing for optical
illusions, atmospheric phenomena and soon. As a Catholic theologian
such witnes sing cannot be dismissed. Witnessing is one way of t
ransmit ting truth, andin the case of the Christ ian religion, we
are talking about a divine reve lation in which witnes sing is
crucial to t he credibilityof our faith.
On Life on O ther Planets: That life may exis t on other planets
is certainly possible The Bible does not rule outthat possibility.
On the basis of scripture and on the basis of our knowledge of Gods
omnipotence, H is wisdom beinglimitles s, we must af firm that life
on other planet s is possible. M oreover, this is not only poss
ible, but also credibleand even probable. Cardinal N icolo Cusano
(1401-1464) wrote t hat there is not a single s tar in the sky
about which
we can rule out t he existence of life , even if diff erent f
rom ours.
On Intelligent Extraterrestrials: When I t alk about ext rate
rres trials , we must think of beings who are like usmore probably,
beings more advanced than us, in that t heir nature is an ass
ociation of a mat erial part and a spiritual part,a body and a
soul, although in diff erent proportions than human beings on
Earth. Angels are beings who are purelyspiritual, devoid of bodies
, while we are made up of spirit and matt er but s till at a low
level. It is entirely credible t hat inthe enormous dist ance bet
ween angels and humans, there could be f ound some middle s tage, t
hat is, beings with abody like ours but more e levated
spiritually.If such inte lligent beings really exist on other
planets , only s cience will beable t o prove; but in spite of what
some people t hink, we would be in a position to reconcile t heir
existence with the
redemption that Christ has brought us.
T he Anunnaki and the Creation of Man
Well then, I asked Msgr. Balducci, does it mean that my pres
entation was no great revelation to you? We appear toagree, I s
aid, that more advanced ext raterres trials can exist , and I use s
cience to evidence t heir coming to Earth Ithen quote t he Sumerian
texts that say that t he Anunnaki ( Those who from heaven to Earth
came) genet ically im-proved an exist ing being on Earth t o create
the being that t he Bible calls Adam.
M y conclusion regarding your pres entation, M sgr. Balducci
answered, is that more t han anything else your wholeapproach is
based on physical evidence, it concerns itself with matter, not
with spirit . This is an important distinction, because if t his
dist inction is made, I can bring up the view of the great
theologian, Professor Father Marakoff, whois s till alive and is
greatly respected by the Church. He f ormulated the hypothes is t
hat when God created Man andput the soul into him, perhaps what is
meant is not that man was created from mud or lime, but from somet
hingpre-exis ting, even from a s ent ient being capable of feeling
and percept ion. So t he idea of taking a pre-man or hominidand
creating someone who is aware of hims elf is s omet hing that
Christianity is coming around toThe key is t hedistinction between
the mate rial body and the soul granted by God.
