Many companies and communities have recently experienced a back track from rapid development to a previous level of activity. It is like landing on the wrong square in Monopoly and being asked to move back to square one. The situation in the Faroes is more or less similar to the rest of Europe, how-ever industries like salmon farming and pelagic fishery and processing are ex-emptions. But the challenge for many other businesses and society in general is substantial, and the recent need to re-structure one of the two main banks in the Faroes underlines how serious the challenges are. In such situations it is common and natu-ral to return to stable and substantial ele-ments. Speculative business projects with big and fast pay-outs are no longer an option. For this very reason tourism in the Far-oes deserves more focus and care.
Travelers of today are looking for the genuine experience - to experience un-spoiled nature and a genuine society, which is not artificially manipulated to-wards tourism. All this is at our feet. We have unspoiled nature, ever-changing weather, beautiful colours, precious cul-tural heritage, an exciting history and not least a society with a very well-devel-oped infrastructure. Recently National Geographic Traveler applauded all this and chose the Faroe Islands as the world's most appealing islands. But for some reason the potential in de-veloping Faroese tourism does not have the attention it deserves. We need a po-litical and industrial decision that states clearly that Faroe Islands will focus on developing tourism. Following that deci-sion we need to coordinate all legislation and political measures to provide the in-dustry with a secure framework by low-ering public fees and taxes on travel and to underline this by having a high pro-filed tourism development and market-
ing programme. One initiative could be to focus all funds on national marketing efforts and entrepreneurial development within tourism for the next five years. This will not only make the Faroes a live-lier and more fun place to live in. It also helps to develop a sustainable industry that will not slip out of our hands at the next bump. Such an effort is possible, just like Livar Nysted’s feat when he set a world record by rowing across the At-lantic Ocean with the Faroese flag high up on the mast as his greatest motiva-tion.

When you sit in the confined space of a small rowing boat, struggling against a rag-ing and unforgiving ocean, your destina-tion thousands of miles away, utilising your energy is key to success. And it is per-haps just this utilisation that is described in the following recount. For it is under the hardest of circumstances that all philoso-phy is reducible to a single, laconic phrase:
"It doesn't matter how you f*** them as long as they are f****d."Livar Nysted - on beating any form of obsta-

Thursday, June 17th at 1:30PM the rowing boat Artemis departs from Battery Park, New York City. The 23 feet long boat is named after UK fund manager Artemis In-vestment Management. Scots Leven Brown and Don Lennox, Irishman Ray Caroll and Faroe Islander Livar Nysted are heading across the Atlantic - 3,200 miles to the east. Their destination is the Isles of Scilly, a small group of islands just off Great Brit-ain's southern coast.
Over the course of the next 44 days, the Artemis' crew will be pushed to the limit in everything from rowing to psychology.
Above all, the rowers need patience. There isn't much space for rowing or sleeping. Two men row, while the other two rest. The shifts are two hours long. Their bod-ies' adoption to the new, awkward sleep-ing rhythm makes the first few days ardu-ous. The few breaks they have are spent on eating, although they certainly don't get a
gourmet meal. Their 7,000 daily calories are almost solely from Cadbury chocolate bars and nutrient powder. They make sure to periodically drink the distilled water; on previous voyages, they have heard dogs bark and creatures rise out of the sea due to dehydration.
The weather varies wildly. They experi-ence warm noons, ice cold nights, soaking days, tailwind, storms and breaking waves - all while rowing steadily to the east.
Well into the trip, Livar spots a floating tree with its crown and branches still in-tact. He yells out: Ahoy! Large tree to port! Leven Brown, who is on shift with Livar thinks that the Faroe Islander has drunk seawater and gone mad. But as Leven looks, he sees that it really is a tree in the middle of the ocean!
A true vikingIn the Faroe Islands, it is sometimes joked that a Faroe Islander is born with an oar in his hand - though this could be said to be painful to the mother. 40 year old Livar's viking blood most definitely flows strong-ly. But heritage alone does not a viking
make! What makes Livar Nysted, the Faro-ese champion of ocean rowing a real vi-king is his upbringing in the Faroes.
Livar Nysted is born and raised in the old fishing village Hvannasund on the island
of Viðoy, where he still lives and used to work as a fisherman and artist. It is also where he went to school, al-though he never was much for aca-demia. As with most of the 200-odd inhabitants of Hvannasund, his inter-
ests revolved around fishing and the sea. He also played football
and volleyball and practised judo. But roughly 10 years ago, Livar's life changed dramatical-

ly: He was invited to competitively row in the traditional Faroese rowing boat.
The boat he was with was the Nevið Reyða from the neighbouring town, Klaksvík. When Livar sat down in his boat to com-pete in the Faroe Islands' national sport, he had found his calling. In 2001 the Nevið Reyða won the Faroese rowing champion-ship and in 2004, when Livar was rowing with Sundabáturin, the boat became cham-pion as well. And again, when Eysturoyin-gur won the championship in 2007, Livar was on board! At times, when the boat ar-rived at the goal, Livar would be bleeding from his mouth out of fatigue.
Fantasies of naval feats are common in is-land nations and for Livar, ocean rowing was the next step. In 2003, he and some Faroese friends attempted to row from the Faroes to Shetland. The journey turned out a complete failure. In 2005, they tried again.
This time, they got within arms reach of Shetland's beaches, but had to stop due to dangerous weather.
In 2008, Leven Brown contacted Livar. The Scot planned to row from the Canaries to Barbados faster than anyone had managed before. Livar accepted, but the attempt was unsuccessful due to a rudder failure after they had rowed 1,000 miles in just 10 days.
In January 2010, Leven again contacted Li-var. This time Leven wanted Livar with him on the voyage from New York City to the Scillies. He chose Livar for his endur-ance, but also for his calm and thus his
essential contribution to the well-being of the crew. Livar accepted, but swore that if this trip failed, he would never come back to the Faroes.
Humble cHAmpionWhat makes a Faroese villager take to the sea in a 700 pound chassis made out of epoxy, kevlar and solid foam? Did they not expect the boat tipping over or giant ice-bergs, huge tankers, curious whales and floating containers crushing the boat? Didn't they think that food poisoning and waves several times the size of the boat would end their journey? And that the 700 chocolate bars would be eaten a week be-fore landing?
They did. That is why braveness, motiva-tion, persistence and stamina are essential to such a record attempt. But when things go bad, you need something to lean on. For Livar, it was the Faroese flag, the Merkið,

that as the sole national symbol flew at the top of the Artemis' GPS-antenna. Looking at the flag kept Livar motivated when the future of the trip looked dim. Thoughts of the late Faroe Islander, Ove Joensen, who in 1986 rowed 900 miles, from the Faroes to Denmark in only 41 days also helped keep Livar strong.
At times, Livar's mind drifted to a humor-ous moment, when the crew explained the journey to an Australian bartender in New Jersey. The bartender looked at them in disbelief and said:
"Guys, you're either very blaady tough or very blaady stupid. And you don't look that blaady tough to me."
When the Artemis' crew reached the har-bour of St. Mary's, the largest island of the Scillies on Saturday, July 31st at 3PM, they walked up the same stairs that their late adversaries had in 1896. Their loved ones sprang into the arms of the unwashed and
ungroomed men. Indeed, the best thing about sailing is coming home.
And what does the hero do, when the act is done, the record broken and interna-tional media have published him to every corner of the world? He goes home to his village of Hvannasund, looking for a pay-ing job. Being a star in the small island nation of the Faroes brings you glory, not money.

Torshavn lies at the centre of a mountain-ous archipelago anchored to the obscure underground of the North Atlantic Ocean. It is hard to spot on the world map, but looking carefully through the magnifying glass, you will discover a whole universe of people, villages and breathtaking land-scapes. The Faroes are, says the great au-thor William Heinesen like a grain of sand on the dance floor. And here “in the end-less mercury fluorescent ocean” you will find a remarkable old town named after the Nordic god of thunder and lightning: Thor. For twelve centuries Torshavn, meaning Thor´s Harbour, has been the heart and nerve centre of Faroese society. Now, holding the magnifying glass care-fully above the miniature town, you find a small and narrow strip of land jutting out
into the bay. This is the centre of the cen-tre. On this isthmus called Tinganes the first colonizers gathered to hold parlia-ment and govern the Faroe Islands. Tinga-nes, with its four to five hundred years old houses, is still the seat of the Faroese gov-ernmental offices. From Tinganes the cap-ital has expanded heavily towards east, west and north.
The old settlement of the Vikings has transformed into a modern urban centre with close ties to the global world. The large growth started in the late 19th centu-ry. In the year of 1801 the capital and the Faroes had only, respectively, 554 and 5.255 inhabitants. One and a half century later, in 1950, the population numbers had risen to 5.607 and 31.781. Today the capital
municipality shelters 20.000 souls. Four out of ten Faroe Islanders are Torshavn residents. The harbour of Thor is the politi-cal, administrative, financial and cultural core of the wind-swept archipelago on 62° north. It is, in Heinesens cosmology, noth-ing less than the “navel of the World”. And there is really a long way to the nearest rival cities. Aberdeen and Dundee in Scotland, more than 550 kilometres away, are the nearest neighbouring cities. There is no way to avoid Torshavn when in the Faroes. All roads – on sea and land – lead to the capital. Observing Torshavn in the dark evening from a hill with a good view, it looks like a big city with thousands of lights spreading over a vast area. Anyway, day-light unveils the truth: a green town with small colourful private houses.

green town in growtHIn Torshavn you find buildings in all co-lours and sizes. They are green, yellow, blue, brown etcetera. Most families reside in private dwelling-houses with surround-ing gardens shielding small trees and flowers within a fence. Except for the dense old centre, with its narrow and un-even alleys, the town is characterized by detached two-storey houses – large and modern in style – along straight symmetri-cal streets. In a way, this peculiar landscape resembles European suburban middle-class neigh bourhoods. But it is some thing else. The owners and residents of the houses are from different social classes and re-
gions in the Faeroe Islands. Most families, especially those rooted in village commu-nities, value the independency and priva-cy that this mode of life assures. In the North Atlantic region, with long and rough winters, people are willing to invest all their resources into a warm and comfort-able home. The weather puts an inescap-able limitation to outdoor life. The citizens of the capital favour a spacious green town, peaceful and innocent that reminds of the countryside.
Torshavn is always in motion. The har-bour on the gentle southeast coast of Streymoy island, with needle-shaped Nól-
soy as a natural rampart in front of the capital, is a vivid and progressive town full of self-confidence. Proud of its history and culture, Torshavn keeps a strong inde-pendent identity that no rival Faeroese town has the power to put at risk. The mu-nicipality of Torshavn is prosperous with a fast growing population. Soon, expected-ly, more than half of the Faeroese popula-tion will have address in Torshavn. Every year new neighbourhoods crop up, fur-ther and further up the hillsides. The new houses, far from Tinganes and the old port, often have a spectacular bird´s eye view of Torshavn and the ocean. In Tor-shavn people pay for the view, not for sup-

posed high class areas. Even if the munic-ipality has established a qualified network of free public busses connecting all parts of the capital, most people prefer to travel by private car in their everyday life. The car symbolizes comfort, independency
and mobility. Also, the rainy weather is turning many potential walkers into inac-tive car-drivers.
summer And HolidAyDuring summer Torshavn is full of activi-
ties. Faroese and foreign tourists pack the charming alleys and walks of the centre. Thousands of Faroe Islanders living abroad – most of them based in Denmark – fly home to visit the capital during holidays in July and August. Enormous luxurious cruise ships from Europe and North Amer-ica sojourn by Thor´s harbour for a day or two. Summer is also marked by its numer-ous sports, cultural and art festivals. Every week offers new curious cultural adven-ture. The enchanting cafés and bars – of-ten with live music sessions – are crowded with local and foreign guests enjoying the mild summer nights by the untamed ocean. Small fishing vessels come and go. At Vágsbotnur, the new trendy spot at the western port, fresh seafood is sold directly from boats a few steps from the cosmo-politan pavement cafés. The culmination of summer´s joyful fes-tivities takes place at the end of July. The Faroese national festival, Ólavsøka, hon-ours the Norwegian king Olav Haraldsson, who was killed in a battle 29th July 1030. Ólavsøka is also the day when the Faroese parliamentary year is set about. During the festival the population of the capital is of-ten doubled, most of the partying people gathered in a few jam-packed streets in the centre. After Ólavsøka the summer ends. Holidaymakers return to their daily lives in foreign countries. Slowly Torshavn returns to its normal rhythm and routines. The streets are less crowded and evenings less lively. Summer and winter are, here in the
north, like day and night. The contrasts are remarkable. As a modern society with ad-vanced infrastructure and technology life has generally become much easier for Faroe Islanders during the long winter sea-son. And even if the land is an almost in-visible grain of sand on a huge dance floor, at the same time it comprises a whole uni-verse full of details that fit together like pieces of the puzzle.

complex and inconceivable. But once it was just a rocky and misty plot of land without noteworthy value. The shore was unsuitable as a port. The location was inappropriate with the risk of hostile attacks in mind. There were no bird cliffs around. Even driftwood was missing. So why settle here on a narrow strip of land jutting out into a worthless bay? –Because it was strategically located at the midpoint of the archipelago. It became society´s neutral junc-tion between north and south, east and west. General laws and rules were introduced; conflicts and disputes between families were solved; criminal tribunals were arranged. Thereafter Tor-shavn also became the main market for commercial activities. Torshavn´s banner portrays Thor´s magic hammer that never dis-appears. Every time the God of thunder hurls it, it returns safely to him. For those visiting Torshavn, the same happens. When they leave town it comes back. Again and again – as a magic memory and experience.

Ólavur Thomsen, stjóri á JT electric, greiðir frá, at fyritøkan fór undir at menna eitt nýtt trolkamera, tí trolvirkið Vónin hevði tørv á at síggja, hvussu ein nýggj trolrist hjá fyritøkuni virkaði.

"Allar royndir hjá okkum við troli verða í dag gjørdar við kamera. new FAroese inventionThe deep-sea landscape is transmitted to the bridge enabling the crew to
monitor what they are actually doing.
This is one of the greatest advantages of the TrawlCamera, which JT electric
at Kambsdalur in the Faroe Islands has developed in collaboration with P/F
Vónin and several skippers that have tested this new invention.
Ólavur Thomsen, CEO of JT electric, explains that the company began devel-
oping a new trawl camera, because trawl manufacturer Vónin needed to see
the performance of a new trawl grid developed by the
company.
Work on the camera intensified resulting in a product
that attracted attention abroad, and JT electric pro-
moted the equipment in Spain last year.
“Attending the exhibition in Vigo in Spain last year, we
came to realize that there was a demand for the cam-
eras, and as it turned out, we were the only ones mak-
ing them. We saw that skippers and others were seri-
ously interested in the product, and that strengthened
our suspicion that we were on the right path,” Ólavur
Thomsen says.
Most skippers know approximately how their gear be-
haves on the seabed, but with JT electric’s TrawlCam-
eras, it is now possible to see this in living images. The
system has also come in handy at the Faroese Marine
Research Institute, Kristian Zachariassen, expert in
fishing gear says.
“Today all our trawl experiments are conducted with the
aid of cameras. This is necessary because trawling with
no camera is like repairing a car blindfolded,” he says.

50 ATLANTIC REVIEW 03/2010
Tey ringastu kreppuárini eydnaðist ikki at fáa Atlantic Airways at geva avlop, men gongdin skuldi sum fráleið venda. Í 1995 hevði felagið á fyrsta sinni avlop á rakstr-inum. Hetta árið varð virksemið spakuliga víðkað til eisini at umfata flúgving til Íslands. Atlantic Airways átók sær at standa fyri hesi flúgving í samstarvi við Air Iceland.
Atlantic Airways at leiga eitt flogfar aftrat. Í januar 2008 undirskrivaði felagið sáttmála við Airbus um at keypa eitt nýtt flogfar av slagnum A 319.

Denne lyd varer i ca. 30 sek.
Elasticiteten er netop udtryk for flyets enorme styrke over for lufthavets påvirkninger.
