Dear Friends,Welcome to Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada’s tenth anniversary season!

The years have slipped by as we have built Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada from a small regional troupe into an international success story.

As you look through this brochure you will discover our biggest and boldest season ever. This season will see the September world premiere of FIDELIO in Bonn, Germany, and another world premiere of GHOSTS OF VIOLENCE in February 2011 at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa.

We are excited to announce that in addition to our Moncton season, for the first time in our history we will be mounting full seasons in Fredericton and Halifax! On October 7 we partner with Symphony Nova Scotia to bring the Canadian premiere of FIDELIO to Halifax. A Maritime tour of the ballet follows.

And there’s more. Our Grant Thornton Velvet Gala in Moncton on November 12 will be a blockbuster event celebrating our first incredible decade. Fredericton and Halifax audiences will also have the chance to enjoy this exciting repertoire program as part of their season. Finally, our most popular ballet, PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, will tour the Maritimes in March.

Throughout our first 10 years, Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada has been blessed with loyal audiences and a committed body of supporters that continue to grow with us each year. On behalf of all of us in the Company, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have been with us since we first stepped on to the stage with our inaugural ballet FIGARO, as well as the countless new friends who have joined us along the way.

We have so much to celebrate in this, our 10th anniversary year, as we perform internationally and across our home region. We hope that you will make this the season to become an Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada supporter and join us as we celebrate an unbelievable 10 years!

See you at the theatre.

inspired by the story celebrated in beethoven’s opera, igor dobrovolskiy’s Fidelio is a contemporary interpretation that vibrates with an elegant harmony of movement, musicality, vitality, and humour. set on a transcendent fusion of beethoven’s symphonies 7 and 8, Fidelio makes its world premiere on september 11 at the world-famous beethovenfest in bonn, germany. the halifax performance is the Canadian debut of the ballet and marks the Company’s first collaboration with symphony nova scotia. Channeling the athletic velocity and artistic virtuosity of the dancers into an entertaining story of sublime motion, atlantic ballet theatre of Canada continues to re-define classical dance and electrify audiences.

…we try to present the international dance elite in Bonn. The Atlantic Ballet Theatre has won recognition through the adaptations of great stories of world literature. The company seemed to us to be ideal to narrate the big story of FIDELIO as a full-length ballet in Bonn, the city of Beethoven.Burkhard Nemitz / deputy general director, theater bonn

OFGHOSTSVIOLENCE

ghosts oF violenCe is a groundbreaking multi-media work which brings the issue of domestic violence into the spotlight. it is an innovative and poignant call for awareness, understanding and action.

the ballet was created by igor dobrovolskiy at the request of the new brunswick silent Witness Committee, a member of the north american movement that pays tribute to women who have lost their lives through acts of domestic violence. it brings to life stories inspired by women who have died at the hands of a partner. through movement, theatre, music and videography, this full-length work captures their memory – their struggles, their hopes, their joys and our loss.

GHOSTS OF VIOLENCE makes its world premiere in Ottawa this season and will tour throughout the country in 2011 – 2012.

a sell-out across Canada and europe, our most popular production returns. igor dobrovolskiy’s Phantom oF the oPera, inspired by the unforgettable story by gaston leroux, is set on the haunting music of French composer Francis Poulenc. the production features a spectacular set, breathtaking costumes and evokes timeless themes of love and loneliness. erik, an exile, who is driven by a hopeless love, lives in the shadows of a world of his own creation.

Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada has shared stirring dance performances with people of all ages and backgrounds across the Atlantic region for a decade. During these years, our education and outreach programs have provided unique opportunities for communities, schools, children, and families to personally connect to the arts.

BEyOND THE MAIN STAGE

Many young people in Atlantic Canada experience the magic of theatre for the first time through this extensive program which targets children and youth with academic, social and domestic challenges. Every season Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada makes more than 2,000 performance tickets available to schools, youth groups, social agencies, and groups serving children-at-risk.

SPOTLIGHT ON KIDS

yOUNG ARTIST PROGRAMThe Company extends the scope of training for aspiring young dancers wherever we tour. Master classes and repertoire workshops at this level are opportunities which are usually only available in large centres. We offer this unique experience in cities, towns and rural locales throughout the Atlantic Region and across the country. We also open Company class and rehearsals to dance students wherever we perform, giving young artists a look into the life, dedication and work of a professional dancer.

CULTURE MANAGEMENTAtlantic Ballet Theatre has collaborated with the Ron Joyce School of Business at Mount Allison University to develop a culture management case study using background from the Company’s history and growth. The study has now been formatted as an interactive CD for students. Atlantic Ballet Theatre also initiated its first Culture and Management Internship in May of 2010.

Atlantic Ballet Theatre artists and technical staff take school children on a journey of dis-covery onsite at our ballet studios or wherever we tour. Students explore costume design, lighting, sets, music and more as they get a hands-on experience in creating a ballet.
