Celebrating Academic Excellence

Jason Esteves BOARD CHAIR, ATLANTA PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Dear Valedictorians, Salutatorians and STAR Students:

As Chair of the Atlanta Board of Education and on behalf of my colleagues, I congratulate you for being shining examples in our community!

Each of you are academic leaders and you have set the standard for which all APS students strive. You stayed the course in the middle of a pandemic navigating changes in the learning environment. The dedication and hard work you gave to your studies have paid off, as you have been selected as 2021 Valedictorians, Salutatorians or STAR Students of your respective schools. Your outstanding academic achievements are laudable and the doors of opportunity are vast. As you begin the next chapter of your lives, stay focused and continue to learn from every challenge and experience – past, present and future.

As you look ahead to the future, remember your parents, friends, teachers, counselors, advisors, mentors, community leaders, and principals who played an important role in helping you get to this milestone in your lives. I charge you all to reach back and lift those who are following in your footsteps, as each of you have left an indelible mark on your school community. I also charge you to choose your paths wisely and surround yourself with positive people who will help you realize your dreams. Take time to celebrate and enjoy these prestigious accomplishments and know that we are rooting for your continued success. Again, congratulations and best wishes to you all on your future endeavors!

Best,

Lisa N.Herring SUPERINTENDENT, ATLANTA PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Dear Valedictorians, Salutatorians and STAR Students:

Congratulations! Despite the extraordinary challenges of the past school year, each of you has demonstrated the commitment to go far beyond the basic requirements for graduation and set new and higher standards for yourselves, your schools, and your communities. As a result, you stand as the Valedictorians, Salutatorians, and STAR Students of Atlanta Public Schools for the class of 2021 and for my first class as your superintendent!

As an educator and as your superintendent, I could not be more proud of you, our young scholars, whenever you seek new challenges and new ways to test the limits of your abilities. It is especially satisfying that, even after numerous trials and tribulations, you find success and create your own pathways for lifelong learning and achievement.

What makes your accomplishments most impressive is that they come during the most trying times of our life – a season of pandemic and a season of social unrest. And yet, not one of you ever rested nor ever let up. You kept engaging in the sacrifice, hard work, and diligence to consistently achieve and maintain the kind of performance required over four years of high school to be honored here today. Remember that striving for achievement is always worth the struggle. When you persist despite the circumstance, you might not always succeed, but you always emerge stronger and smarter for the effort. The ability to forge ahead despite any obstacle, challenge, or distractions, I promise you, is among the most desirable and effective skills you will have for success in college, in your careers, and in your lives.

Beyond this moment, the challenge to you is to build upon your successes. I urge you to maintain your momentum and challenge yourselves to take your abilities and accomplishments to find ways to make your community, city, and nation better. But for today, let’s celebrate your accomplishments! I offer you the best wishes for success in all of your future endeavors.

Yours in Service,

Valedictorians andSalutatoriansThe Atlanta Board of Education permits each traditional, charter and partner high school to identify a senior as Valedictorian and one as Salutatorian in accordance with administrative regulations set forth by the Superintendent. They are chosen at the end of the first semester of the senior year. The eligible student must have been enrolled in the respective high school from which he or she graduates by the end of the first semester of the junior year. The numerical grading system is used by Atlanta Public Schools as required by the State Board of Education. Class rank, as shown on the transcript, is calculated using numerical grades and is considered final and official once a student completes all graduation requirements. The averages of the valedictorians and salutatorians for the Class of 2021 are based on the weighted system listed in the numeric grade average summary at the end of the transcript.

STAR StudentsThe Student Teacher Achievement Program (STAR) honors Georgia’s highest achieving high school seniors and the teachers who have been most instrumental in their academic development. Since its creation in 1958 by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, the STAR program has honored STAR students, who have in turn chosen their STAR Teachers to share in this recognition. In 1994, The Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) Foundation was selected by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and the State Department of Education to continue the tradition of recognizing Georgia’s future leaders and honoring the professional educators who have nurtured these scholars.

Every accredited high school in Georgia is eligible to participate in this student/teacher academic recognition. To obtain the STAR nomination for the Class of 2021, high school seniors must take the two-part SAT; have the highest score on any single test date taken through and including March 13, 2021; and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class based on grade point average. SAT scores must be equal to or higher than the SAT national average scores on the Evidence Based Reading and Writing and Math sections. For the 2021 STAR program, these scores are Evidence-Based Reading and Writing 528 and Math 523.

Deonte Bridges CLASS OF 2010 VALEDICTORIAN, BOOKER T. WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL

At an early age, Gates Millennium Scholar and Morehouse College alumnus Deonte Bridges decided to take a route that many of his peers often chose to steer away from and fully dedicated himself to academics. This mentality, along with a strong work ethic, earned Deonte the esteemed title of valedictorian for the historical Booker T. Washington High School’s graduating class of 2010. In fact, he was the first black male valedictorian from the high school in more than a decade. In addition to securing the top spot in his graduating class, Deonte also managed to earn more than $1 million dollars in scholarship offers.

However, the road to success wasn’t an easy one for the now 29-year-old. His acquaintance with grief and adversity began early on with the untimely passing of his elder brother Maurice. Shortly after, another devastating blow was delivered with his mother’s diagnosis of leukemia. Then adding to the overwhelming stress, at age 15, Deonte was robbed at gunpoint less than one minute away from the front door of his home. Nevertheless, despite the paranoia of a near-death experience; the pain of missing his older brother; and the uncertainty of his mother’s prognosis, Deonte still maintained superior academic success – and this is why so many people have been encouraged and inspired by his journey.

Since delivering his high school commencement address in 2010, the name Deonte Bridges has become a popular one. His graduation speech took the Internet by storm and has been viewed by millions of people all over the world – even to places as far as Africa and Europe. As a result, Deonte has made appearances on national television shows such as CNN Live and Fox & Friends, has been a guest on BBC Radio and V-103’s Frank and Wanda Morning Show, has graced the pages of the Atlanta Journal Constitution and Essence Magazine, and has had celebrities such as P. Diddy; Tyrese; and Kevin Hart acknowledge his efforts by sharing his story with their respective fan bases.

Recently featured in the AJC for his success as an educator during the pandemic, Deonte continues to work tirelessly to ensure school readiness; improve academic achievement; inspire civic leadership; encourage personal accountability; and promote resiliency among people of all ages. Nowadays, he is highly sought-after public speaker and educator who is on a mission to use his voice and experiences to engage, educate, and empower people all around the world.

They migrated to the United States about 20 years ago to give her brother, who suffers from cerebral palsy, a better life. With his leadership, he led the team to a region championship and is an all-region linebacker.
