Forsyth Barr Stadium Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin, New Zealand, is the world’s only permanently covered stadium with a natural turf playing field.

For the project to be economically viable the design had to enable grass to grow naturally inside the building.

Through rigorous testing and full-scale computer modelling, the design team was able to verify that strong, healthy turf could grow under a fixed roof made of ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE).

“ We were punching well above our weight. It is an outstanding achievement of which all of New Zealand should be proud.”

Dominion Salt Mount Maunganui vacuum Plant Upgrade Dominion Salt initiated a major upgrade of their existing vacuum plant to increase the production of pharmaceutical and food grade salt by 50 per cent, while minimising capital cost and significantly improving plant operating efficiency.

Aurecon worked with Dominion Salt and equipment suppliers to develop a solution to expand the existing three-effect evaporator into a new five-effect evaporator so that pharmaceutical grade and food grade salt could be manufactured simultaneously.

Significant annual energy savings are derived by utilising the plant’s existing steam generation capacity and recovering waste heat and putting it back into the production process. The project was completed on time and within budget.

“ Energy is a major input cost for manufacturers. Getting those costs down — and improving the carbon footprint of the process — improves Kiwi exporters’ ability to compete internationally. Dominion Salt is an excellent example of this in action. I’m sure other companies that rely on process heat will be inspired by this to find efficiencies in their own operations.”

nCiG Coal export Terminal Control SystemThe Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group (NCIG) Coal Export Terminal Control System project was initiated to provide a modern, robust automation solution for the coal terminal’s infrastructure.

Aurecon worked closely with NCIG to meet the challenges of a large, fast tracked project with multiple vendors.

The control system is based on high end Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and uses state of the art technology. It allows NCIG to monitor the plant’s fundamental business service, track incoming rail deliveries and shipping outputs, manage stockpiles, site-manage product and customer billing, monitor utility services usage, and provide staff with tools to manage the plant to business key performance indicators.

The project was completed safely, early and under budget. It delivered improved quality, reduced risk and downtime, and provided a stable Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) platform.

Community residential Unit refurbishment ProgrammeTo improve the quality of life for tenants in the City of Cape Town, an upgrade of residential units was initiated.

Aurecon delivered project management and technical assistance, including civil, structural and electrical design expertise for the programme to upgrade 3 840 units.

General renovations were made to buildings, roofs, electrical and plumbing systems. New ceilings, floor coverings, cupboards and geysers were installed. The surrounding areas of the units were also upgraded, including fencing, refuse management, area lighting, the greening of areas and recreational facilities.

By employing many local people on the project Aurecon was able to transfer training and skills to the community.

10

“ The project involved a great deal of job creation, so Aurecon allocated work to the local community wherever possible.”

north-South Junction ProjectsKiwiRail’s North-South Junction Project in New Zealand is the first stage in a programme to improve the country’s rail system.

Aurecon provided civil, survey, geotechnical and project management services for the project. A high degree of originality in both design and construction was required to meet the challenges of a very tight timeframe and a severely constrained site. The scope of works included increasing the line speed from 50 kilometres per hour to 70 and reducing the risk of rockfall from slopes high above the tracks.

The project was completed with minimal disruption to freight and rail services during construction and has increased the efficiency of trains using the line, reducing journey times and improving reliability. Improved slope stability measures minimise future slope erosion.

“ The award is recognition of the excellent work undertaken by the Aurecon team on what was a very challenging railway project.”

north Shore Hospital lakeview extensionThe Lakeview extension at North Shore Hospital in Auckland provides a new admissions unit, a Coronary Care Unit (CCU) with two angiography suites, modifications to the existing emergency department and a new Computed Tomography (CT) for the existing radiology department.

Aurecon provided all building services and fire engineering and completed a full 3D model of the services in 3D REVIT.

The project features a double glazed low e curtain wall façade with excellent views for patients to Lake Pupuke.

“ The inclusion of stormwater harvesting has resulted in lower water use, whilst the installation of a 60ºC heat pump chiller has cut gas consumption at the hospital to less than the usage before the extension.”

SH18 Hobsonville Motorway and SH16 Brigham Creek extension The SH18 Hobsonville Deviation and SH16 Brigham Creek extension project in Auckland entailed six kilometres of new four-lane motorway (SH18), a three kilometre, four-lane extension of the SH16 motorway, four major interchanges, seven bridge structures and 1.2 million cubic metres of earthworks.

Aurecon applied innovative techniques to the highway geometry, geotechnical and structural engineering. This provided the contractor with a significant competitive edge and increased whole of life value for the New Zealand Transport Authority.

As a Road of National Significance, this strategic project will provide a sustained macro-economic contribution to local, regional and national growth and prosperity. The extension has improved network resilience by providing an alternative route to travelling across the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

Meulwater Water Treatment Works The eight Ml/d Meulwater Water Treatment Works (WTW) is located in South Africa’s Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve. Aurecon was the engineering and environmental consultant for the project.

To minimise visual impact, granite was sourced from excavations for cladding of all structures so that the building texture closely approximated that of its surroundings.

Direct filtration, which is unusual in South Africa, was chosen to reduce the plant footprint. The filters are designed to be easily upgradeable to dissolved air flotation-filtration units in the event of changes in raw water quality.

The plant eliminates the need for the local municipality to purchase water from another water supply authority, providing long-term savings.

“ The design team overcame significant challenges in providing a solution for the water needs of the Drakenstein Municipality in an extremely sensitive environmental area.”

Shipton’s Flat Partnership Project Bana Yarralji ranger Base Partnering with the Centre for Appropriate Technology (CAT) and Engineers Without Borders Australia (EWB), Aurecon has assisted the Kuku Nyungkal people of the region to realise their vision of transforming the land into a community healing and eco-tourist site featuring local indigenous rangers and a conservation programme.

Aurecon volunteered all architectural project management, construction management, statutory and environmental planning and engineering services for the project.

Located in a remote indigenous community in Shipton’s Flat, Daintree, Queensland, the completed Bana Yarralji Ranger Base includes power and water supply, an environmentally appropriate wastewater treatment system, office facilities, communications systems, and an ablutions block containing composting toilets, showers, storage and laundry on a site that previously had basic shelter and limited facilities.

16

“ It was such an honour for us to receive the award on behalf of everyone involved in the project. There were many worthy award nominees and lots of people came up to congratulate us — or even to tell us that they’d used the ablutions block!”

Melbourne Main Sewer replacement (MMSr) One of the most complex and challenging sewerage tunnelling projects undertaken in Australia, this project replaced the existing 110 year old Melbourne Main Sewer with a new 2.4 kilometre long gravity sewer underneath Melbourne’s inner city and the Yarra River.

The challenging crossing of the Yarra River was completed using an innovative temporary sheet pile cofferdam method to lay 140 metres of 2.4 metre diameter steel sewer pipe on the river bed.

As Project Manager, Contract Superintendent and Contract Administrator, Aurecon helped deliver the MMSR project from the planning and design phase through to the completion of all major construction works in May 2012, safely, on time and five per cent below budget.
