Welcome To Holy Family Parish My church is composed of people like me. I help make it what it is. It will be friendly, if I am. Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them. It will do great work, if I work. It will make generous gifts to many causes, if I am a generous giver. It will bring other people into its worship and fellowship, if I invite and bring them. It will be a church of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, and a church with a noble spirit, if I, who make it what it is, am filled with these same things. Therefore, with the help of God, I shall dedicate myself to the task of being all the things that I want my church to be. Anyone who wishes to practice the Catholic faith by attending this church may consider this parish as his/her own parish. You simply need to register. Please indicate whether you are a new parishioner or have moved and are providing a new address. Thank you. 4th Sunday B Jan 27/28, 2018

First reading (Deut. 18:15-20) Moses speaks of the prophet whom God would raise up after himself, one who would speak the words of God and command the attention of the people.

Second reading (1 Cor. 7:32-35) St Paul praises the celibate way of life, seeing in it a more favorable means than the married state for undivided devotion to the Lord's affairs.

Gospel (Mk. 1:21-28) We learn about the deep impression made by our Lord at Capernaum, through his teaching with authority and his healing of a man possessed by an unclean spirit.

ST VINCENT DE PAUL

What does the Society of St. Vincent de Paul do with the monies donated to them?

Once a week, active members gather to pray and to take on the task of meeting with needy people who have requested assistance. Phone calls are made, visits are arranged and those who are in dire straits are helped out, if possible. When this assistance is given, those receiving it are calmed and consoled. Often this gift of kindness restores an individual’s faith in humanity and perhaps offers them a sign that God does love them and has sent them a helping hand in the form of two St. Vincent de Paul volunteers. This ministry requires commitment; however it can also be deeply rewarding. Please consider joining us in our mission to follow in Jesus’ footsteps by giving the gift of your time to those who have nowhere else to turn. If you are interested in helping, please call either church office listed below. ***Meetings are held Tuesdays at 4 pm and alternate monthly between Holy Family and St. Patrick’s Church. ***

WE INVITE YOU TO BELONG!! The Catholic Women’s League is, first and foremost, a spiritual organization. We are a huge network of Catholic women

across Canada and connected to the global world. Every Catholic woman is specially chosen to be a League member. What qualifies us? It is part of who we are as mothers and sisters. We are all ordinary women among 87,000 others who have chosen to volunteer our gifts for the service of others. It is a privilege to belong to the League for personal reasons, but the great need to be in an organization such as ours also fulfills a necessary mandate to be a strong Catholic voice in our church and country. We are blessed here at Holy Family Parish to be a council comprised of friendly, welcoming, inclusive and faith-filled women working together ‘For God and Canada’. With prayer, encouragement and vision, the Holy Spirit does inspire our members to meet our challenges. Our journey as a Catholic woman is real. May you too be inspired to respond to God’s call by purchasing a

DEFEATING THE DEVILS Never has the devil, demonic possession, and exorcism been so widely discussed as it is today. And yet, few satisfactory explanations are proffered. This powerful film describes the origin of the evil spirit, the devil's descent, and his interruption in the world from the temptation of Adam and Eve to the present day. The devil's powers, his tactics, objectives, and limitations, are discussed by several renowned experts in the field of demonic phenomena, including the most famous of all, Fr. Gabriele Amorth, the Official Exorcist of the Diocese of Rome and author of perhaps the definitive scholarly work on demonology (+2016). We discover how the devil works through temptation, curses, infestations, hexes, and possession, among others. We learn what his preferred victims are like and how they fall in his traps. We also explore the world of spiritualism, Tarot cards, astrology, Satanism, and other occult practices. The Dark Side: that which is vanquished by the light of faith in Christ who is more powerful than all evil. This movie is not rated, but was created with an adult audience in mind. We would recommend Parental Guidance and that parents preview it before watching with children.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION

WORLD DAY FOR THE CONSECRATED LIFE FEB. 2 . In 1996 St. John Paul II established this observance on February 2nd (the Feast of Presentation of the Lord in the Temple) for the whole Church. The purpose of the day is “to help the entire Church to esteem ever more greatly the witness of those persons who have chosen to follow Christ by means of the practice of the evangelical counsels” as well as “to be suitable occasion for consecrated persons to renew their commitment and rekindle the fervor which should inspire their offering of themselves to the Lord.” In the second reading of this Sunday St. Paul says: “The unmarried man is anxious about the affairs of the Lord, how to please the Lord… The unmarried woman and the virgin are concerned about the affairs of the Lord, so that they may be holy in body and in spirit…” (1Cor 7: 32-35). That was the first ideal of consecrated life. Do we appreciate the gifts of consecration of religious sisters, brothers and priests?

Jan. 24 - The most radical antidote to the virus of falsehood is purification by the truth. There is no such thing as harmless disinformation; trusting in falsehood can have dire consequences. Jan 23 - Prayer that purifies, strengthens and illuminates our path is like fuel for our journey towards full Christian unity. Jan 22 - I am grateful to all who have accompanied me on my pilgrimage to Chile and Peru in so many ways, especially with prayer. Liked

Jan 21 - The Lord calls you today to travel with Him through the city, your city. He calls you to be His missionary disciple.

POPE FRANCIS

REFLECTION ON THE TRIP TO CHILE AND PERU In his first General Audience following his Apostolic Visit, Pope Francis called for a round of applause for the

people of Chile and Peru who he was able meet on his journey. He thanked all those who helped make the visit possible, especially the tens of thousands of mostly young people who offered their time and talent as volunteers. Chile - "My peace I give you" The Holy Father reviewed the various stages of his journey noting the motto for his visit to each of the two countries. In Chile, the motto “My peace I give you” was made “more current and living” on account of various protests that took place ahead of his visit. He noted that the gift of peace – the peace each one of us needs – can only come as a gift from Jesus, dead and risen. And he asked for continued prayers for peace. Peru - "United by hope" The motto for the Pope’s visit to Peru, “United by hope,” prompted the reflection that unity does not mean a “sterile uniformity” where all are equal. Instead, unity consists in bringing together “all the riches of the differences that we have inherited from history and culture.” The Words of Jesus Wrapping up his resume of his Apostolic Visit, Pope Francis said, “As always, the words of Jesus give everything its fullest sense, and so the Gospel of the final Eucharistic celebration has recalled the message of God for His people in Chile and Peru: ‘Repent, and believe in the Gospel’ (Mk 1:15). So, the Lord seems to say, ‘receive the peace I give you and you will be united in My hope’.”
