PRESIDENT’S REPORT It is my pleasure to present my annual report.

While reading through the reports I am reminded that we do have ‘The best little club on the Taieri’.

I would like to thank all the convenors, committee members, athletes, parents and caregivers for

supporting the club as we worked our way through another summer section and the winter section is

now just beginning.

The club changed round the summer programme bringing the senior section back to competition on

Tuesday nights to encourage involvement and foster the spirit of the club. This worked well and it

would be good to see this continue going forward. The children’s section dropped in numbers over

the summer months but this was not out of the ordinary. The winter section is continuing to grow and

is in good spirit.

As a club, we don’t have it on our own trying to grow our members and the sport in general, but I

think we need to keep doing what we are and getting the word out there as much as possible. We

have fantastic athletes competing in all areas of the sport from athletes in the 7-11 Team

representing the Otago Centre to our seniors competing on the world stage. The building and

grounds have had quite of bit of maintenance over the past few months and Donal (and Brendon)

have ticked off all the ‘things to do’, the new security lights are great. Thank you also to all those that

got the new long jump mat down. A huge thank you also goes to Mark and Tayler who have replaced

the ridging on the roof. The next major thing will be the spouting.

The club has worked together as a group in fundraising events and we have continued to receive

grants and our thanks go to The Southern Trust and the Bendigo Valley Sports & Charity Foundation

for their support. My thanks goes to Ross for his work done predominately in the background with the

clubs finances.

I would like to make a special mention and thank you to Diana for her fantastic job as the club

secretary; I think it can be one of the busiest and time consuming jobs which she works away at with

efficiency and expertise.

It was my honour to receive the ‘Trevor Bent Memorial Trophy’ but I am only one person among a

great group of people that keep the club going and I would like to thank you all.

Bearing in mind that I am still the Immediate Past President/Interim President it would be good to get

someone to take on the President role.

Lyn Mackay

Interim President

BUILDING & GROUNDS This year through a huge team effort from everyone there have been a large number of projects undertaken. BUILDING PROJECTS: Training and Weights area: The entire floor area has been covered with rubber covering, Many thanks to Raylene for organising the new floor covering, plus the large team involved in the unloading and placement of the new rubber. Trophy Display Cabinet: A Trophy Display Cabinet has been installed in the clubrooms situated beside the honours board thanks in the main to Rob for championing this project, as many hours were spent looking at different options, plus the collection and transport and assembly of this to the clubrooms. Ceiling Panels: The centre ceiling panels have been secured along with the redundant centre lights removed. Security Lights: New sensor operated lights have been installed at either end of the building on the car park side. Roof Ridge Iron Replacement Huge thanks to Mark for organising the new ridge roofing iron, this is essential in preventing water egress in the ridge areas. And a big thank you to Mark and Tayler for also replacing it. GROUNDS: Long Jump run up track: The long jump run up was overlaid with athletic track rubber. This was a huge task but went very smoothly and completed with absolute precision due to the large number of people who turned up on the day. Thanks to all those that made a huge job seem easy.

Our thanks must go to Raylene and Alex for their liaison with the DCC. New contractors marked the track for our regular Tuesday night meetings. As convenor I extend my thanks to everyone for their contribution in helping keep the facilities functional, clean and tidy.

CHILDREN’S SECTION

The Taieri Children’s section this year had 52 Athletes with 31 of them competing also in the Otago competition at the Caledonian on Saturday mornings. This number of athletes was down on last year by about 30 athletes. We had a strong number of athletes and talent compete on a Saturday but the number of Club only athletes has dropped substantially. This drop in numbers is across the board and not just in athletics and parents don’t seem to get involved the same as they used to.

Gary Beattie, Hayley McHutchon, Mark McHutchon, Rob Urquhart and myself were the main coaches of the season as the Seniors trained at the same time. Losing our Senior athletes as coaches was a great loss to the Club but we managed to get by. We had some great families help out on a Saturday with the long jump pit which was really appreciated. It was good to see the Taieri Club had another really successful season. We certainly have a really strong bond in the Club with both athletes, parents and coaches. Thank you so much to our very small Committee and to the parents that helped out on a Tuesday night and Saturday. A special thank you to Lyn Mackay and Diana Gouverneur for overseeing the Club as a whole. Angie Beattie Children’s Convenor

The South Island Colgate games were held in Dunedin. Taieri had a team of 25 athletes compete at this meeting. A great time was had by all and a heap of PB’s were achieved. Taieri had the biggest team selected for this meeting since I have been in the Childrens section. Our nine athletes were Shyah Beattie, Miller McElrea, Zaine Murdoch, Neve Beattie, Jorja Gibbons, Georgia McHutchon, Sarah Donaldson, Nick Casey and Liam O’Riordan.

All 9 athletes did Personal Bests in their events and competed to a very high standard. Megan Gibbons and myself were lucky enough to be selected to be Team Managers. We had a lot of fun and was great to see such awesome friendships being made and great team spirit. Standout performances were Shyah Beattie coming first in the 13 yr girls Discus and second in the Shotput and Miller McElrea first in the 13 yr boys high jump. Both Miller and Shyah received trophies for third overall in NZ for highest points scored over their chosen 4 events. SENIOR SECTION Again the senior section had a very successful year with our senior athletes recording some exceptional results at Provincial, National and International levels. Huge congratulations to all athletes that obtained personal bests, Otago, New Zealand and World records.

With the revitalisation of the Athletics Taieri Athlete of Year competition prior to Christmas, senior athletes were again competing at the Club competitions on a Tuesday night.

This competition was successful with 22 athletes competing. Junior athlete Shyah Beattie was the stand out athlete during the competition not only winning the overall competition but also breaking a number of club records along the way.

Those athletes continued to perform during the Club Championships after Christmas again with several club records being broken.

A highlight for the Taieri Club was the number of Otago and NZ records broken during the season. Of the 53 Otago records broken during the last 12 months, 40 of these were from Taieri athletes.

Taieri athletes competed with enthusiasm at the Hurring Relays with the women winning the Anderson Cup.

The Club would like to thank High Performance Sport NZ for their donation of flooring matting for the training area of the clubrooms. A working bee was held to lay the flooring and complete a stocktake on all equipment in the clubrooms for insurance purposes.

A grant from the Southern Trust enabled the replacement of the high jump topper mats. Special thanks to Keryn Wilson for organising the construction and delivery of the mats.

52 Taieri College athletes performed extremely well at the Otago Secondary Schools Champs with 17 qualifying for the South Island Champs. The challenge for the senior section is how do we get these athletes competing at the club on a Tuesday night and/or for the Club on a Saturday.

A special thanks to the athletes who represented the Club, Otago and NZ with such pride, the coaches who put their time and effort into these athletes and to the officials that run the competition each Tuesday night.

HARRIERS/WALKING SECTION The 2018 season would have to rate highly, there was plenty of variety in the programme, two very good social trips away to Hanmer springs, and Clyde, two social outings locally, and as a group, we had plenty of good fun! Our numbers have remained consistent over the 6 months of the season, with all having a turn at being absent as our personal lives demand. Pam Wyber has again been an inspirational Club Captain, Thank you Pam, and Jan, our very efficient Secretary, and stand in captain, when Pam was away. Warren has been his usual meticulous self with the club trophies, Lesley contributed greatly, in organising the social outings, every member contributed in some way, making it a happy and agreeable group to be involved with. Throughout the season, there was no need to organise committee meetings, the afternoon tea discussion and associated hilarity, kept everyone involved. Lyn has also played a big part, stepping up in my absence, to produce outstanding editions of the Thursday 'Goss' the section mouth-piece. Georgia McHutchon has been the find of the season, Congratulations on the great runs in the Club road race, Otago Cross Country and Road Champs, and the Inter-school cross country. Janice Finnie (Harrier of the Year) had a series of victories, collecting Masters 50-59 titles in the Hanmer, Clyde-Alex, and Dunedin Marathon events, over 10km and the half marathon distance. Tom Cockerill has been a outstanding advocate for the Taieri club, putting our name out there, with several newspaper articles highlighting his worthy achievements, including the Otago Road Race walking title. Naomi Chisman also was very prominent in the competitive race walks, with several one/two finishes. On the competitive front, two teams performed so well in the Lovelock and Ponydale relay's, and Peninsula Relay. A combined cross-country with Civil Service, adds a more competitve edge. Runs/walks were held at Taieri Mouth, Dunedin, Abbotsford, Waldronville (Guests of Brian/Val Cashmere) Green Island, along with two combined outings - Caversham and Hill City. The early season get-together at Lyn/Steven’s residence, and the Movie night, proved popular. Marshalling duties, there was a good response to all these calls, with emphasis on Edmond Cup day, and the club fund-raiser, the Mud Sweat and Tears at Wingatui, where 60 club members from all three sections helped on the day, raising a tidy sum for the Building Fund. Thank you all, it is never easy making these requests. Kids Cross Country, early August, 67 kids participated, down on last year's numbers, this was not for the want of promotion on our part. Again, we had another superb team of helpers, the event ran smoothly, with good feed-back from the parents and supporters. We can surely reflect on a very satisfying and enjoyable season, the friendship and harmony we have, is something to cherish. 2019 – the season started later, 13th April, with a team of runners competing in the Wanaka half and 10km on the 6th. Some very good early season efforts resulted. A pre-season get-together at Mackay’s, helped to fill the void, providing an opportunity for members to catch up and look ahead. Noticeably absent, good friend, Annette Summers, who has shifted to Rolleston. Opening day, 27 runners/walkers were present, with a number of apologies. We welcomed Karin and John Drummond, along with Karen Thompson, if every member turned up, the total would reach 45, a sign of a growing club. The prospects are there, for another memorable season. FINANCE REPORT for year ended 31st March 2019 I have pleasure in yet again presenting the Annual Financial Accounts of the Club. They cover the period from the 1/04/2018 to the 31/03/2019. Unfortunately the Club has recorded an operating deficit of $1,316, as opposed to last year’s surplus of $647, primarily as a result of the continuing decline in our total membership, but competing athletes and volunteers. In addition our credit interest income continues to reduce as a result of ever decreasing interest rates, to the point where the real value of our term deposits is starting to be eroded. As shown in the following Profit and Loss statements the Children’s section recorded a loss of $2,044, whilst the Seniors and Harriers showed modest surpluses. However the Club continues to remain in a very strong financial position thanks to our income streams, and prudent spending. This has allowed us to continue to concentrate on running athletics without having to look at extra fund raising. Once again the Building Fund benefited greatly from the Mud, Sweat and Tears event for a fifth year, although there is a good chance this may have ended. This has allowed work to be started on repairing the Clubrooms roof. Our Club continues to benefit with another grant from the Bendigo Valley Sports & Charity Foundation of $3,000 in August to assist with the clubs running costs, and a further $1,500 in March to assist children attending the Inter-provincials in Christchurch. A grant of $2,700 was also received from The Southern Trust for high jump pads. Please note that the Harriers figures, as always, relate to the previous winter (2018). I would like to specially thank Lyn for assisting with the Grants and payments, Ang for assisting with the Childrens finances, Diana for sorting out the Section Registration payments, and once again to Rob for all the time organising Mud, Sweat and Tears, and finally to everyone else who have been Marshalls over the past year. Regretfully the Athletics New Zealand Club Net online registration and Subs payment programme continues to add to the time required to monitor, correct in some cases, and reimburse the Sections. There were no Bonus Bonds draws received during the financial year. Ross Linklater, Club Treasurer 13th May 2019
