Chris’ Weekly Spot
LOVE IS IN THE AIR Yes it’s that time of the year when the day of all
things romantic falls upon us. When lovebirds exchange flowers, cards,
chocolates and gifts as a token of their love, care and affection for one another.
Yes it’s Valentine’s Day on Wednesday. Instead of getting too mushy and heartfelt I thought I would
share some interesting facts instead:
Each year about 1 trillion Valentine’s Day cards are sent worldwide.
Women give far more Valentine’s Day cards than men.
Would you believe it? Teachers receive the most Valentine’s Day cards followed by
children, mothers, wives, sweethearts and pets.
Aussie men spend more on presents than their female partners.
Valentine’s Day is the second biggest day to dine out in the calendar year (Mother’s Day
ranks first).
Chocolates first became popular in the 1800's when physicians routinely 'prescribed'
them for their heart broken patients. Richard Cadbury, the heir to confectionery giant
Cadbury's pounced on the idea and began marketing chocolate for Valentine's Day. The
rest is history!
More than 50 million roses will be given around the world.
Men give far more flowers than women.
Receiving a single stem rose implies that you are the only one. Three roses stand for “I
love you.” Eleven stems express the thought “I am the missing stem to make the dozen
perfect”. (Sorry, I know a mushy bit!!)
While it is common to express “kisses” with the letter “X”, the origin of this symbol has
nothing to do with Valentine's Day or love. It is believed that it began during the
medieval times, when witnesses who were illiterate signed their names with an “X” and
then kissed it to show their sincerity.
HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY
