Seventy-Five Years Ago . . . . 1892From The Star. Ju ly 29. 1892
There has been a great deal of
speculation on the possible effect of
the shooting of Henry C lay Fr ick on
the m anagement of the Carnegie
Com pany as well as upon the H om e
stead and other strikes. In th is con
nection a gentleman, w ho knows
whereof he speaks, said this m orn
ing:
“So long as Mr. Frick retains pos
session of his faculties there w ill be
no necessity for a temporary cha ir
man, or even a vice chairm an, to
assume control. Mr. Frick, on his
back today, is the same Mr. Frick
that sat in his revolving chair, in
his office Saturday morning.
“Every detail of every section of
the gigantic interests” under his care
are at his fingers’ ends, and the
corporation w ill be run from his
sick room w ith the same unerring
judgm ent, the same instantaneous
grasp of the situation, the same
autocracy tha t has always d is tin
guished h im .
“This was evidenced Saturday by
his p luck in insisting tha t the sur
geons should stop probing for the
bullets in order tha t he m igh t ap
pend his signature to im portant
documents, as w ell as by his action
in calling a ll the head men into
h is office to give them instructions.’’
More from “Sum m ering a t A m a
gansett,” a poem by W alter Pelham :
“The one blot on this pretty place,
which ladies dread to view . Is the
large store where men at eve, lounge,
smoke, and sp it and chew. They
