We examined 58 state underground storage tank databases, comprising almost 3 million tanks across the United States. Of those listed tanks, about 81% (2.5 million) were used in the past, but are no longer currently active. Similarly, of the 975,000 facilities reporting USTs, about 790,000 of those facilities no longer have any active USTs, but instead would be considered historical facilities.
