VOL. XVI, NO. 3 FEBRUARY 2011 By Judy Gray, OSUA in Memphis, Tenn. “I wanted to change my answer on that last handout, but then I was afraid to!” This comment from one Ursuline Associate during a Fall 2010 session on Change brought about a rousing, and very empathetic round of laughter. The handout in question was focused on identifying our level of freedom regarding change. We all knew exactly how she felt! How many times, in various settings, have we been asked to complete a survey which asked for our first and most honest response, only to find that we wanted to question once again, or maybe even a third time before finalizing our answer? The two Fall 2010 sessions on Change prompted many sisters and associates to prayerfully reflect on our openness to the Spirit regarding change. At times change is inevitable, and not of our own choosing. Such change can open us to the grace of surrender. It can put us in touch with our own desperate need for God in every aspect of our lives. Other changes are prompted from within, from that sacred space where we listen to God and come to understand that a change is needed – either interiorly or exteriorly – in order to live more fully with God at the center of our lives. Our Fall 2010 sessions helped us to look at the Spirituality What’s to come in spring sessions on change? of Change, and at Principles of Change from the Experience of SaintAngela. We used these wonderful opportunities to learn from each others’ rich experience of change in their unique life settings. So, what is to come in the next two sessions? During the Lenten Season 2011, our topic will be Change in Ourselves. This session will help us to focus on personal change. With the help of handouts to serve as guides, together we will explore obstacles to change; resistance to what is new; negative emotions related to change; ways to move past the negative; and positive ways to deal with personal change. The topic of Session IV, which will take place during the Easter Season 2011, is Embracing Change and Transformation. In this session, we come to the culmination of all four sessions – How can we better be the persons, the community, the family, the Body of Christ that God invites us to be? This session will have its basis in New Testament texts related to change and transformation, giving participants an opportunity to reflect on transformation as a life-long journey. Change – exciting to some; frightening to others; a combination of both to many. What a powerful tool to compel us to spend time in Angela’s favorite place, at the feet of Jesus. Page 2 Associate Update February 2011

Dear Associate Sisters and Brothers, My mother always said, “Every day is a good day,” especially when my brothers and I complained about long, gloomy days of Minnesota snow. In the darkness of winter, it’s a special gift to know – for certain – that days will be warm again, that the sun will shine again. As we await that warm sun, let’s make good use of our new year. Now is a good time to look back and reflect on why we became Ursuline Associates. Now would be a good time to thank the person who invited us and guided us in our journey. Now is a good time to say thank you. I extend a hand of gratitude to members of the Associate Advisory Board and to our Area Group Coordinators. They devote many hours and accomplish a great deal for all of us to enhance our associate experience. A new year is also a time to grow and bloom in new directions. For those of you who are unable to meet regularly with other associates, take heart! Watch your mailbox for new opportunities to be connected. I hope you’ve reserved Saturday, June 11 to spend the day with us here at Mount Saint Joseph for Associates and Sisters Day. It’s our annual family reunion, our chance to glory in our relationship with Angela, Mount Saint Joseph and with each other, to be reminded of the great gifts we receive. Until then, I wish you peace and blessings,

Mrs. Marian Bennett, OSUA, Director of Ursuline Partnerships

Gratitude and the Act of Giving“We own nothing that was not first given to us.”- (I Cor. 4:7)

God has entrusted us with many abilities and special aptitudes. As good stewards of these gifts we learn ways to share them

with others. This is true of artistic, musical, athletic, academic, business, monetary, and spiritual gifts. All that we have, God has given us. We need to be grateful, and then find ways to share our gifts with others. According to Melody Beattie, “Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, and confusion

to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow.” It is with this in mind that we look at the many gifts that are shared with us by our donors, associates, alumnae, and friends. Over the past 137 years, the Ursuline Sisters have touched the lives of many people and many people have touched our lives. In those early years, because of the gratitude of many people, our sisters received much of their food, their trips to the doctor, almost everything they needed. There wasn’t a lot of money, but the people shared what they had with the sisters and in turn the sisters shared their education, lives, and total commitment to their pupils. Today, we receive many letters, cards, and notes from these students and friends who are so grateful for the education they received, and the love and concern of the sisters who taught them. With gratitude, they send wonderful donations to support our missions and the retired sisters. These retired sisters pray for their past students and friends, and the active sisters continue to serve on their missions. The circle of gratitude and giving continues. As we begin this New Year, let each of us show our gratitude for all the gifts we have received by sharing them with others. Let’s make a special effort to share our time, talent, and treasure in as many ways as we can. Father Henri Nouwen says it best, “In ministering to each other, each from the riches that he or she possesses, we work together for the full coming of God’s Kingdom.” Let the Kingdom of God come through our act of giving. Happy New Year,

Sister Amelia Stenger, OSU, Director of Development

SISTER ANN MARIE SCHERMAN, 69, died Nov. 8, 2010, at Mount Saint Joseph, in her 49th year of religious life. She was a native of Ottawa, Kan. Sister Ann Marie was an Ursuline Sister of Paola, Kan., until the merger of that community with

Mount Saint Joseph in 2008. She ministered in Kansas and Missouri as a teacher for 26 years, then as a chaplain and health care worker for 18 more years before moving to Maple Mount in 2010. Sister Ann Marie was an eternal optimist, known for her great kindnesses to the elderly who she loved to serve. She loved her family, and enjoyed opera, classical music, and her friend’s chocolate Labrador Chloe. Survivors include her sister, Mary E. Bradshaw, of Leander, Texas; two brothers, Ernie Scherman of Paola, Kan., and Jim Scherman of Bartlesville, Okla.,; nieces and nephews, and the members of her religious community.

SISTER AGNES CECILIA SPEAK, 100, died Dec. 15, 2010 at Mount Saint Joseph, in her 80th year of religious life. She was a native of Irvington, Ky. She was a housekeeper much of her life, beginning in 1932. She was a wonderful cook and baker, and a deeply prayerful

woman. She served at convents throughout the Diocese of Owensboro, Ky., the Archdiocese of Louisville, Ky., and in New Mexico. She served at Mount Saint Joseph in the dairy (1946-47), and laundry (1948-50). She retired to the Motherhouse in 1995. Survivors include nieces and nephews and the members of her religious community.

SISTER BLANCHE RITA BICKETT, 98, died Jan. 10 at Mount Saint Joseph, in her 80th year of religious life. A native of Uniontown, Ky., she ministered in the Archdiocese of Louisville, as well as in Nebraska and New Mexico, from 1933-52. From 1952-89, she ministered

at the Ursuline Sisters Motherhouse, first as kitchen coordinator, then laundry coordinator for 45 years. During those years she acted as a mother figure for several young girls who needed a motherly presence. She was known for her sense of humor and being forever cheerful. Survivors include nieces and good friends, and the members of her religious community. Gifts in memory of an Ursuline Sister may take the form of donations to the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph, 8001 Cummings Road, Maple Mount, KY 42356.
