Depth Does Matter
we have navigated through every market cycle SINCE ‘74
Markaz fared reasonably well in the current crisis; as a result of sound investment policies, proper corporate governance, and a commitment to transparent reporting.
In this reshaped landscape, we are well positioned to withstand the most challenging of times, and have the liquidity, talent, and ability to emerge as a stronger company that will benefit from the enormous opportunities arising.
7
High sovereign reserves:With financial reserves at historic high levels, regional governments are fully capable of sustaining their spending patterns. We expect governments to continue investing in large infrastructure projects.
Well developed capital markets:the regulatory environment - regional central banks as well as capital market authorities - have proven their effectiveness during the current crisis, and reinforced the credibility of the region.
Favourable demographics:Economic growth will continue to be driven by favourable demographics, strong job creation, and one of highest household formations in the world.
Accelerated pace of diversification for the GCC economies:Although the Oil & Gas sector remains the bloodline of the economy, the region’s economies have been undergoing vast reforms and are experiencing an increasing share of non-oil activities in the regional GDP.
Our region,
our marketWe are proud to be based in the Middle East (Kuwait): Although the Region has not been spared from the global financial crisis adversely impacting its capital markets and its economic growth, the Middle East is expected to become the second fastest growing economy, and the prospects remain strong for the following reasons:

Our vision
and where its taking usWe aspire to be the premiere asset management and investment banking institution in the Middle East and north Africa, with a track-record of consistent performance for our clients, renowned for our intellectual capital, and admired by our peers for our strong commitment to ethics and objective advisory that always has our client’s best interest at heart.
11
Its about the client, not us.We are in the business of meeting client objectives. We will never stop adding value to our clients by providing services of the highest quality and ethics, advising them on proper asset allocation and offering them the products that best meet their needs.
Return-generating innovation. In our business, innovation is about opening new investment channels that otherwise wouldn’t be available. Over the last few years we have consistently brought to the market new investment channels. We were the first to launch a domestic mutual fund, a r.E.I.t. (i.e. a real Estate Investment trust), and an options fund in Kuwait to name a few.
Solutions beyond borders. With assets under management spanning from L.A. to Hong Kong, our commitment to our clients goes beyond geographical borders.
Our reputation is King.At Markaz, our reputation is our biggest asset. We’ve been voluntarily operating under strict guidelines long before corporate governance was the norm. We instill our values of ethical dealings and objective reporting into our teams. And, with a management team that has the least turnover among its peers, our shareholders and clients know that 50 years from today we will continue to conduct our business with the same commitment to our values we have today.

Our history
our success storyWe were established after the ’73 oil boom with a mission to channel oil wealth into Kuwait’s infrastructure, and investment opportunities across the world. In 1976 we established the first merchant bank in Korea in partnership with Hyundai Engineering and Construction. By 1979 we acquired a majority stake in Bank of Lebanon and Kuwait and started our U.S. real-estate practice out of L.A. In the 90s, we recovered from our losses caused by the 1990 Iraqi invasion and the Kuwait stock market crash of the 1980s and embarked on a restructuring process. In 1997, our restructuring was complete, and in 1999 we forayed into managing funds with the launch of the first money market fund and first mutual fund/savings plan in Kuwait. As of December 31, 2011 our assets under management totaled US$ 3.1 billion, up from zero assets in 1997, and our reach spans the Middle East and North Africa through our network of offices.
