a Pupils understand and use the word: hello. (1 point)

• Ask pupils to wave at the monster and say: hello!

b Pupils understand and can point to body parts: head, arms, legs. (3 points)

• Read the teacher script below. Pupils look at the picture and point to the body parts as you say them.

• Pupils find a blue crayon. Say: blue and demonstrate picking up a blue crayon.

Note. Rather than colouring the whole of the monster’s head, which can be time-consuming, you can ask them (L1) just to make a blue mark on the monster’s head.

Use the assessment to check that:

a Pupils understand and can point to family members: mum, dad, baby. (3 points)

Note. Repeat the teacher script as often as necessary. If your pupils have good hand/eye coordination, you could ask them to draw a line through the paths. Otherwise, just use the tracing with a finger method.

Use the assessment to check that:

a Pupils understand and can point to animals: dog, mouse, bird. (3 points)

• Read the teacher script below. Pupils look at the picture and point to the animals as you say them.
