An extremely rare kind of phenomenon for the RSS-BJP, the public lecture series was aimed at bringing the RSS to the audience as also to the country on the basis of‘concrete knowledge about the Sangh’ which has now emerged ‘as a force in this country’, as Dr Bhagwat claimed. However a scrutiny shows that the conclave and its lecture series were not just covering up of truths, but dishing out falsehood, half-truths and deliberate distortions camouflaged as truth. Behind the smokescreen of these, the RSS has tried to cover up the horribly dreadful face it carried since its foundation. The background scene Now the RSS-BJP holding power of the Union government, can unhesitatingly be equated The RSS chief Dr Mohan Bhagwat’s speech to Delhi elites-intellectuals Turns out to be nothing else than utterly crafty exercise with inhuman acts of love jihad, cow- vigilantism, lynching putting stamps of child lifting, cow- slaughtering, beef eating etc on the minoritis and dalits. The list is endless:NRC in Assam, pellet and bullet showering on common people by the security forces in Kashmir in the name of curbing terrorists, Ram- mandir issue conveniently revamped now and then spewing venoms of communalism, saffronisation and curbing of autonomy in education, distortion of history and science, destruction of scientific thinking, destruction of all leading institutions of the country or packing those with RSS-BJP men, killing of radical thinkers and rounding up of so- called urban naxalites, generation and circulation of the world’s currently largest number of fake news and so on. All these have left people of the country panic-stricken, though people are increasingly becoming aware of the intent of these and thus turning passive, or even opposing them. Dr Bhagwat’s views summarized On such a background, Dr Bhagwat drags the audience to the roots introducing Dr KB Hedgewar as the founder of the RSS and paints him and his organization the RSS as ardent lovers of the country who for its betterment try at Vyakti nirman, that is man-making for it. Dr Bhagwat then defines Hindutva, claimed as propounded by Dr Hedgewar, as ‘all-inclusive’ belief in welfare of individuals equating it with the welfare of all, a new vocabulary for the RSS to camouflage the reality and befool people as well. To elaborate his premise, Dr. Bhagwat emphasizes that ‘ our tradition’ is to ‘recognize’ and ‘respect’ all differences. The Hindutva and the Hindu rashtra, as the RSS conceived, were value-based preaching for ‘Unity among diversity, harmony, sacrifice, restrain and submission’. Sagely, he adds: ‘Satisfaction, self- realization (Swadhyay) and god, you would find everywhere. The latest Assembly election of five states of the country yielded chequered results. In one word, it was marked by an intense anti-BJP-RSS current in people flowing underneath all outward humdrums in media and social-political domain. People seemed to be coming out of the spell of the pleasantries of the rhetoric of Narendra Modi, the prime minister. The four and a half years of BJP rule at the Centre and for different spans in a number of states, definitely provided the background. His party winning the 2014 Loksabha election by overwhelming margin, Narendra Modi entered Parliament jubilantly touching the ground at the entrance of the ‘sacred citadel of democracy’, as he theatrically termed it. Before or immediately after the election with equal, if not more, drama he made promises to the people. He vowed to bring achche din or good days for the country. He glibly assured a fairly fat sum for the bank account of each Indian poor. He boastfully called for a ‘Make in India’ drive to boost sagging industry, with which slogan he also tried to allure the huge army of unemployed with the day-dream of plenty of jobs. There were many more. But as days passed by, the BJP leaders including the party president Amit Shah, even openly admitted that those pledges were nothing but chunawi jumla or election stunts; achche din vanished into thin air with prices rushing sky- high to torment people and add more and more profit to the monopolists and their corporate. Demonetization, again dramatically clamped at midnight with the pious declaration to curb black money and terrorism, left so-called targets unscathed. But it surely made bank accounts run dry for not only the poor and middle class , but also small and middle businessmen. Mohan Bhagwat highlights Hedgewar, totally omits Golwalkar and Savarkar

This is the view which unites us and is thebehaviour that is taught in our families throughgenerations after generations, ... this is what ourculture is made upon through reforms andpractices ( sanskaro ki dwara)’. And then hedeclares : ‘Those communities who had come toIndia from outside world and after that havebecome Indians, be they Muslims, Christians orotherwise, must be carrying these practices andhabits in their families, had they been able tobecome real Indians. This is the value-basedculture which unites us’. In the words ofBhagwat, “Dr Hedgewar said there is reason”for the fact that, “In our Indian society, there arepeople who do not call themselves Hindus.” Butbesides adopting the Hinduness or , Hinduism,“‘there is no other way ... to bring unity”. SoHedgewar said clearly that “this Hindustan is aHindu state . We would organize the Hindu state”(all emphasis added: P Era).

Pretensions, distortions, half-truths andsheer falsehoods galore

Summarized in briefest terms, these ideasturn out to be hollow words, rather full ofpretensions, distortions, half-truths and sheerfalsehoods. Number one. No doubt, DrHedgewar was the founder of the RSS in 1925.But it was in 1923 that Vinayak DamodarSavarkar, later a leader of the Hindu Mahasabhawhich worked in tandem with the RSS,presented the ideas of Hindutva and Hindu-padpatshahi (Hindu overlordship) in a book byhim. And, it was MS Golwalkar, a later RSSchief, who added arrogance and aggression toit to spread its organization widely in thecountry. See, what kind of venom he spewed! In reference to ‘the Muslims and Christiansdwelling in this land’, Golwalkar boastfullypronounced “Together with the change in theirfaith, gone are the spirit of love and devotion forthe nation.” (from Golwalkar’s book Bunch ofThoughts). They are cleraly marked as notIndians. Is it ambiguous at all? Any doubt iscleared from his another book We or OurNationhood Defined. There Golwalkar wrote:“The foreign races in Hindustan must eitheradopt the Hindu culture and language, must learnto respect and hold in reverence Hindu religion, must entertain no idea but those of theglorification of the Hindu race and culture, i.e.,of the Hindu nation and must lose theirseparate existence to merge in the Hindu race,or may stay in the country, wholly subordinatedto the Hindu Nation, claiming nothing, deserving no privileges, far less any preferentialtreatment - not even citizen’s rights”.(emphasis added: P Era) This was howHindutva was expressed and given a footholdas the rabid Hindu communal doctrine. Itsproximity with the fascist thoughts is evident inthe following eulogy of the Nazi Germany inGolwalkar’s book: “German race-pride has nowbecome the topic of the day. To keep up withthe purity of the race and its culture, Germanyshocked the world by her purging the country ofthe Semitic races- the Jews. Race pride at itshighest has been manifested here. Germany has

also shown how well-nigh impossible it is forRaces and Cultures, having differences going tothe root, to be assimilated into one united whole,a good lesson for use in Hindusthan to learn andprofit by. “ (We or Our Nationhood Defined)And for Vyakti nirman, their leader ABSMunje visited Mussolini’s Italy to learn theirfascist methods of training youth withregimentation and military training. The RSSSakhas (i.e., units) were built up accordingly, onSavarkar-Golwalkar’s ideas and diktats whichspoke of India consisting of two nations bySavarkar and Golwalkar clearly standing forethnic cleansing and submission of ‘foreignraces’ to the Hindu race. For organization, theRSS units were based on fruits of Munje’smission. But Mohan Bhagwat in his three daylong speech omits any reference to Savarkar-Golwalkar- Munje, barring a mention ofGolwalkar only in the question-answer sessionon the third day. It may also be mentioned herethat the RSS has brought out an edited newversion of Golwalkar’s ideas which Dr Bhagwattried to unconvincingly justify as for presentingGolwalkar’s enduring thoughts and removingremarks of ‘temporary context’.

However, it is Savarkar’s Hindutva andGolwalkar’s vicious fascistic theory elaboratingit, upon which the RSS all through opposed theindependence movement and were not acceptedby people at large. The RSS leaders cannotignore or erase these truths however hard theymay try now. On face of this reality they havenow adopted this tactics of omitting Savarkar orGolwalkar, in the main. Besides, as peopleexperience today, all the present activities of theRSS reflect precisely what these Hindutvawadileaders preached to give effect to. So, thequestion arises: Is the omission or cursoryreference to Golwalkar because of the RSSchanging its line? Or, is it shameless suppressionand distortion of truths, facts and names that arenow disturbing or embarrassing for them and sothey wish to keep those below the carpet fornow?

Number two. Dr Bhagwat vouched for DrHedgewar’s love for country. And the sameHedgewar as the RSS chief, had instructed theSangh members not to participate in the SaltSatyagraha ( Source: Biography of Dr.Hedgewar by the RSS) which Gandhi hadlaunched in 1930 and in which people took partin masses for the first time in India in theemerging ‘nationalist’ independence movement .In 1942, during the Quit India movementagainst the British rulers, Savarkar, instructed allHindu Mahasabha members employed ingovernment offices or elected to local andregional legislative bodies, to attend their officeand cooperate fully with the Britishgovernment. A note of the British governmentalso corroborated that the RSS leaders had metthe secretary of the home department and“promised the secretary to encourage membersof the Sangh to join the civic guards in greaternumbers,” which were nothing but “special”force of the government for “internal security”.While referring to the man-made severe famineengineered by the British rulers in 1942-43,

Golwalkar opined that “The evil with today’spolitical sentimentalism is that its basis isreaction, sorrow and anger, and oppositionto the victors forgetting friendliness.”(emphasis added) These were the glowinginstances of ‘nationalism’ of the RSS, rather theHindutvawadis and their opposition to the foreignrule of the British imperialists! In fact Golwalkarclearly held “Anti-Britishism was equated withpatriotism and nationalism. This reactionaryview has had disastrous effects upon the entirecourse of the freedom movement, its leadersand the common people.” Are these not enoughto attest unambiguously that the RSS wasagainst the national independence movement?Did the RSS ever participate in anti-Britishnationalist freedom movement? Did they notcondemn independence movement as‘reactionary’, ‘unpatriotic’, as found from theabove quote, when thousands of youth andstudents sacrificed everything and bravedbayonets, bullets and gallows? Will it be wrongto conclude that it was this stand of the RSSwhich could lead Muslim League to emerge inreaction as its off-shoot? In return, both theRSS and the Muslim League, were reportedlypampered, eulogized and even fuelled by theBritish imperialist rulers, as they proved handyfor them to keep Indian people divided. Partitionof the country on the flimsy ground of religionwas the tragic outcome. But hateful andferocious communal activities of the RSS did notend even with that.

Number three. What is the RSS brand ofinclusivenss? The kind of welfare it prescribesfor the non-Hindu community, is evident fromGolwalkar’s words quoted above; the non-Hindus ‘must lose their separate existence tomerge in the Hindu race, or ... stay .... whollysubordinated to the Hindu Nation, claimingnothing, ... not even citizen’s rights’. This is‘the value-based culture’ of the Hindutvawadis‘which unites us’, ‘there is no other way ... tobring unity’. The sugar-coated words of respect, harmony etc., from Dr Bhagwat then concealveiled diktats, coating being meant for meetingdemands of situation. Be Hindu to be an Indian, this is the logic of the RSS! This is the essenceof “sacrifice, restrain and submission” for thenon-Hindus, the minorities to give effect to“diversity and harmony” for the majority, theHindus to boast of ! Is it anything other thanthe worst form of Hindu communalism and itsimposition on the minorities?

Delhi conclave was held on a backgroundnarrated briefly earlier. Today, the Hindutvawadiaggressiveness and its rabid anti-Muslimcommunalism, are, to a great extent, nakedlyexposed to the people, including the intelligentsia. So the RSS had to make attempts to find newerways and means to push through their ideology. This was the demand of the present situation. They had to harp a more persuasive, melloweddown tone for the purpose. It is no change ofmind or heart or line. It is a somersault which theyundertake as a larger well-meaning section of theHindu population can not accept the atrocities ofthe Hindutvawadi brigade on good faith. But

Contd. from page 2underneath all niceties of expression remains thevicious RSS current. Their leaders announcedand still announce : “We would organize theHindu state”. What could be its shape can beguessed from the recent incidents, such as killingof Akhlaq allegedly for beef-eating or from theinstance given below. The village panchayat ofTitoli, a village quite near the national capital, hasimposed a ban on public namaaz, the communityprayer of the Muslims, has forbidden 800 oddMuslim residents from keeping beards and hasordered them to choose only Hindu names fortheir children. It has taken over a Muslimgraveyard, Waqf property and instead provided apiece of land far away from the village. Think ofit! The Hindu rashtra is still only in thoughts! What would happen if it really comes true? DrBhagwat said “ We don’t want Sanghdomination”. Does not the reality bring out that heis telling lies ? (Source: https:// www.newsclick.in/ many-silences-mohan-bhagwat : 28September 2018)

The votaries of Hinduism and Manu –Sanhita , including their ideologue Golwalkar donot find ‘any evidence of caste system disturbingthe social unity’. But in reality they try even towithdraw permission to use books by KanchaIlaiah from the Political Science course of theDelhi university, because the writer is one of theleading representatives of studies on dalits, andcategorically underlines the history of Hinduismas a history of the Brahminic sect guided by thediktats of Manu- Sanhita (an epitome ofcasteist thoughts), never caring to include thehistory of the dalits and other so-calledlower castes. This, and there are many suchinstances show how the flag-bearers ofVasudhaivakutumbakam using the sugar-coatedwords of universal brotherhood, trample uponbrotherhood in their own land. As a face-savingeffort to the provabis and pratisthits present inthe Delhi conclave Dr Bhagwat mumbled thatcaste “victimisation exists in our society”, andemphasized that laws be made and implementedproperly and are not exploited and misused. Look,he could not escape. He had to admit that neitherHindutva was all-inclusive, it harbours castedivision and causes victimization of so-calledlower castes. Nor there is any dearth of lawswhich are being ‘exploited’!

History of the RSS is the history ofregimentation based on deceit, savagery, hatred

Today, what is happening around is horrific. Some dalit youth carry dead cows. Scavengingis their livelihood to leave the village clean. ARSS-incited frenzied mob lynch them onallegation of killing cows. On alleged charges ofloving a Hindu girl a migrant Muslim labourfrom West Bengal is beaten to death in public inRajasthan. The whole act is video-photographedand posted in social media. The killer proudlyannounced his act of killing a minority man asnoble. Later, it was found that the mancommitted a cold-blooded, pre-planned murderand the charge of loving a Hindu girl was simplyfalse. Akhlaq of Dadri village in UP has beenreferred above; he was lynched by an irate mobinside his residence on charges of keeping and

eating beef. It came out on investigation that thestuff was mutton, no beef. Efforts were made tochange the result of investigation. In the sameUP, very recently a mob in frenzy led by a localBJP leader killed a police officer and anotheryouth when the officer tried to prevent the mobfrom attacking people shifting dead cows. A BJPminister audaciously made a comment thatpeople are bothered about killing of two men, butnot of so many cows. How the cows died, naturally or not, was no concern for him. Suchghastly brute incidents go on recurring with theadministration, including the Prime ministerkeeping meaningful silence or even taking sidefor the killers. And the provocateurs or the killersturn out invariably to be the RSS-BJP activists orbelonging to their fringe organizations likeBajrang Dal etc. People do no longer expectthat the ruling combine will hold the moralresponsibility for these acts! Rather it hasbecome the order of the day in this regime, thatthe RSS-BJP will always fabricate chargesagainst their perceived enemy, will attack them, kill them with impunity and then leave no stoneunturned to prove the innocence of theoffenders. Such was the case with the Gujaratpogrom where minority community people werebrutally butchered or with infamous‘encounters’ like that of killing of Shorabuddinwhere accused are bluntly acquitted helped bythe false report of the CBI and earlier aninvestigating judge of that case mysteriously died. Now and then the RSS-BJP ignite communalissues simply to make inroad into the masseswho are victims of thousand and oneconfusions, for instance in Gujarat where theybecame successful to plant a prolonged BJPrule. Since their foundation they seemed to bebaying for blood of people of other religiouscommunities with worst kind of communalhatred towards them, committing numberlesshorrifying communal attacks all over the countryunleashed with extreme brutality throughperpetrating gruesome killing, loot, arson, rapeand all such heinous and cruel acts without anyremorse and without sparing any, even child, oldor women. They were so ruthless and mindlessin their acts that they did not hesitate to rapewomen brutally, to rape even a pregnant woman, rip open her womb and bring out the foetus atthe tip of a trident and dance with that as inGujarat pogrom. They felt no compunction to cutchildren into two halves throwing them onswords. Like swarms of locusts they rode onand ravaged the historic Babri mosque . Suchwere their Hindu religious performances! Insum and substance, the RSS-BJP or their closeallies in the Hindutvawadi brigade have allthrough acted true to the training they had beengiven, as a lethally armed, blood-thirstyregimented force. They acted on any frenziedcall of their leader and that too simply on blindsubmission and unquestioning faith mingled withrabid hatred and worst kind of communallycharged killing instinct against their perceivedenemy, particularly the Muslims. Hence alwaysthe incidents exposed bitter hate campaign basedupon falsehood, treachery and unrepentantanimosity. As a routine, the RSS leaders tendedto shift the onus on to the Muslims.

One must not forget that the RSS was

founded at a time when the country was risingup to prepare for a countrywide nationalistmovement against the foreign rulers, the Britishimperialists, who had established a powerfulcolonial rule to exploit the people and theresources of this land. It was the time, whenShaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh hadcourageously pronounced that he was an atheistand Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose declared thatreligion is a private affair of individuals, communalism is an enemy which must be foughtagainst and politics was to be guided byeconomic, political and scientific theories. It wasalso a time, when the world had seen the rise ofthe first socialist state on the strength ofinvincible ideology of Marxism-Leninism andunder its impact communist or leftist movementwas developing in different countries includingIndia. At all this, not only the imperialist rulers, even the national bourgeoisie of this country whowanted to gain power from the imperialists toestablish its own rule of exploitation had becomeapprehensive of the working class revolution. They preferred religious thinking instead ofscientific thinking and strongly opposedrevolutionary line in the freedom struggle. Thenationalism they stood for was Sarba dharmasamannoy, which virtually became Hindu-religionoriented nationalism. As it was dominated by so-called upper caste Hindus, it not only alienatedthe Muslims, but also the so-called lower casteHindus. In spite of all these limitations, powerfulindependence movement developed , along withthe revolutionary current gaining momentum. This made the British rulers panicky and theyapplied divide and rule policy. Thus the RSS, theHindu Mahasabha and the Muslim league actedas the means to serve the British imperialists.

It is true that despite all its weaknesses, atthe impact of the independence movement, theRSS or the Hindutvawadis could not make theirdesired headway. Still they did exist, withanimosity towards their perceived enemies intheir blood, as it appeared. And, as mentionedabove, they preferred to eulogize Nazis ofGermany the epitome of brutality and anti-semitism and followed fascist forces of Mussolini. To draw in new recruits, particularly the youth, they posed as social workers. They projectedtheir leaders as all powerful and propheticengaged in bringing social good as well as invyakti nirman, man-making, as Dr. Bhagwatindicated. From behind the smokescreen of theseinnocuous social activities and religious posesthey carried on building up brigades of fanaticmuscle power to act virtually as fascist storm-troopers on minority communities. The savageryof these communal attacks remained muchunknown to people at large of the country, because the British rulers used these to giveeffect to their infamous divide and rule policy andeven within the main- stream politics the RSScould pick up sympathisers. In consequence, thevictims of the RSS had such experiences thatwere not to be erased even across generations.

RSS and politicsWith such a background the RSS leaders,

past or present not excluding Dr. Bhagwat in theDelhi conclave, claimed or claim, that right from

RSS history presents a dark chapter

RSS-BJP rise to present positionsubserving monopolists faithfully

inception the Sangh had been conscious to stayaway from electoral politics. No office bearer ofthe Sangh is allowed to be a member of anypolitical party and is supposed to stay away frompolitics. This again is a Goebblesian techniqueof catering false ideas with ulterior motive. Evenduring the independence struggle, in 1940 SubhasChandra Bose warned people of the country“Hindu Mahasabha has sent sannyasis andsannyasinis to solicit votes with tridents in hand.Every Hindu bends his head on seeing saffroncloth and trident. Hindu Mahasabha has appearedin the scene by taking advantage of and defilingreligion...isolate these traitors from the nationallife. Do not listen to them.” (Speech at Jhargram)In the present reality, under the present BJP-ledUnion and state governments not only top politicalleaders, even people at the helm of importantsocio-cultural-economic organizations arehandpicked from among the RSS activists andare installed without caring for any establishedand practised norms. And this precisely provesDr Bhagwat’s claim a lie, that ‘we don’tspecifically work towards increasing ourinfluence. It happens by itself.’ For that the RSS-BJP needed RSS activists like Narendra Modi –Amit Shah take the rein of the country andthereafter they destroy even the institutions thatstill exist as vestiges of democracy, trample theminimum democratic norms that persist despitetheir rampant erosion in the country during theseyears of independence. So the RSS was theladder for the BJP to rise to political power, nowthe RSS-BJP are acting to retain power by allmeans, fair or foul.

To justify the apolitical character of the RSSand why the BJP is replete with RSS activists,Dr Bhagwat says that : “We don’t ask theSwayamsevaks to work for any specific party”.Again a deceptive statement which hides the factthat the RSS and the BJP are the two sides of thesame coin. On one side they maintain a face ofso-called social activities under cover of whichthey train their sakhas with weaponry andregimentation. On the other side, they maintainthe BJP as its political outfit. This is a techniquethey had followed in the past, and are followingas yet with increased virulence.

Dr Bhagwat adds: “Though we stay awayfrom politics, we do have views regardingnational policies and if we have the strength, wepursue those policies with that strength. And wedon’t do it secretly but in full public attention.”Did Dr. Bhagwat take the Delhi elites, or for thatmatter the countrymen, as such nincompoops asnot to note the contradictions and worstdeceptions underlying these utterances? Do theRSS leaders meet the political leaders merely incourtesy calls, who in turn, are presently none butRSS men themselves? Why do they keep theirnational policies, which are nothing but politicalpolicies, concealed up in their sleeves to bring outas and when needed?

BJP-RSS emerge as favoured subservientagent of the ruling monopolists

So the conclave contained nothing but tricksto mislead and misguide people concealing the

real design; not anything but a continuity of ahistory of an organization which betrayed thenation right from their inception, which thrivedupon falsehood, deception, hatred, even ferociousanimosity towards their perceived enemy, definedon religion. It is for no love of religion. It is forpower.

Presently parliamentary democracy in thisIndian capitalist state is the facade from behindwhich the ruling monopolists continue, consolidateand strengthen their class rule with the electedgovernment acting as their trusted subservientpolitical manager. When the Congress-led UPAgovernment had been fast losing its hold overpeople as its blatantly pro-monopolist anti-peoplepolicies were aggravating crises in people’s life, the ruling class, the monopolists stood behind theBJP, led by Narendra Modi, with all supports ,from finance to propaganda. Modi-led BJPgovernment in Gujarat along with the RSS,perpetrating administration-backed ghastlypogrom against the Muslims had proved theirefficiency in creating virtually a deep verticalcleavage among the masses preventing themfrom standing united against capitalist exploitationand oppression. With Modi in Delhi, the RSS andthe BJP found a smooth road for rising to a forceto reckon with, as Dr Bhagwat has described inhis speech.

But the Indian capitalism, inalienable part ofthe crisis-ridden world capitalism, suffers fromintense all-out crisis. Amidst that, the pro-monopolist policies of the Modi government tohelp the monopolists reap their maximum harvestthrough earning maximum profit, have fleeced thecommon toiling people to their skeleton. This isgiving birth to increasing resentment and wrath inthem. These have caused the ruling RSS-BJPcombine to face an uncertain future with the nextparliamentary election in immediate view. Theyneeded a revamping of their image and retaintheir power to serve the ruling class, themonopolist for pelf and position. This is why theychose this conclave as one of their means.

Mohan Bhagwat’s lecture and fascismAs mentioned the whole conclave was

conducted with a tone of moderation, a melloweddown approach of persuasion that appeared toattract as large a target as possible. So with overtor covert means, with distorted truths, half-truths,camouflages, deceptions the RSS chief tried todrive their points home into the people. Heavoided unpleasant issues that may harm theircause. So Savarkar- Golwalkar-Munje wereoutwardly brushed aside. Instead, with carefulcunning Dr Bhagwat praised Congress for theirrole in independence struggle, mentionedRabindranath Tagore , even Dr Abdul Kalam, ending with mentioning of MN Roy or a the thenCPI leader of Vidarbha. The motive, unspokenthough, was clear: to make impression upon aslarge section of the population as possible on howdemocratic the RSS was and is.

It is here that lies the greatest danger. Torealize its significance in proper light we need todigress to the invaluable discourse on fascism, presented by Comrade Shibdas Ghosh, thefounder General Secretary of our Party SUCI (C)

and one of the eminent Marxist thinkers. In hiselaboration, he showed that fascism is ahistorically conditioned form of counter-revolution,designed to save the crisis-ridden capitalist orderfrom collapse in the face of mountingdissatisfaction of the people against the existingsystem. It is characterized by a dual policy ofruthless suppression and persuasion or deception.

In India today, on one hand, with the PrimeMinister Modi turning mute on any unwarrantedoccasion, the RSS-BJP combine is carrying outtheir Hindutvawadi agenda that includeunabashed communal conflagration leading intoattacks upon people of the minority communitiesand other marginalized sections of people. If andwhen, that is not impossible, the combine releasesheinous hate campaign. All this aims at keepingthe toiling people divided even mutually warring, unable to put up a united face against the rulingmonopolists. On the other hand attacks onsecular scientific bent of mind through unbridledsaffronization of education and promotion ofobscurantism, bigotry, etc., tend to dehumanizethe common people pushing them into thedungeons of blindness, faith and submission. These provide the ground upon which fascismfinds the right soil to grow upon. It is throughpersuasion or deception of such dehumanizedpeople, that the RSS-BJP combine aim atgarnering support of unsuspecting and politicallyunconscious rather confused masses who tend toact on blind faith and unscientific irrational ideasand concepts. And based upon that the rulingclass, the monopolists, can carry out the fascistplans and programmes befooling the masses bythe slogans of development, inclusiveness, etc.Dr. Mohan Bhagwat’s Delhi speech bears allthese characteristics. It vouches for the samerabid communal RSS ideology of Hindutvawadistalwarts from behind all sugar-coated words toldor unpleasing words left untold.

Absence of left-democratic movementhelped RSS grow to this frightful shape

But there is another question stillunanswered. Here are the forces ruling thecountry which wield their power and boastfullydeclare everybody in the country must be Hindu,we will make it, if necessary we will coerce, ifyou do not yield to our power we willexterminate you. And such audacity is virtuallygoing unchallenged. Why? Even during the anti-imperialist freedom movement, with so manydrawbacks, such forces could not rise with thisvenom. Had there been such an ambience in thecountry, it is sure that struggling people wouldhave thrown these forces into isolation and thuswould have wiped them out. Instead, theseforces are clamouring of democracy, theatricallybending to touch the ground at the doorstep ofthe Parliament and after entering it are wieldingthe swords of discrimination, division evenannihilation of their perceived enemy, theMuslims. How could they? With independence, bourgeois rule of the Indian monopolists hasbeen established to take deep roots in course ofthese years. Even for a decade afterindependence, at the impacts of the

cruel  minority  and  dalit  bashing  and  lynching, mindless atrocities on women and children, killingof radical thinkers, annihilation of any oppositionin  the  name  of  nationalism,  anti-terrorism  anddevelopment,  destruction  of  all  leading    social-cultural-political,  even  legal  institutions packingthem  with  RSS-  BJP  activists  or  supporters, saffronization  of  education  to  wipe  out  thevestiges  of  scientific  ,  secular  education  stillremaining,  spread  of  obscurantism,  bigotry, distortion  of  history  and  even  distortion  intextbooks,    and  fanatic  communalism  to  fan  upblind  faith  and  bring  about  dehumanizedsubmission in mass mind. With such socio-politicaloverbearing, the ruling powers tended to bring thecountry  under  their  total  dictation,  with  peoplegasping    for  life  in  a  shattered  economy  andinsecure  society.

Naturally  in  consequence,  strong  resentmentgradually  turning  into  wrath  even  protest  andresistance,  were  accumulating  in  the  hithertoconfused mass-mind temporarily mesmerised withmedia  hype  for  Modi-Shah  couplet.  Peasantsstarted refusing to bow down;  they were murderedfor  protesting,  yet  they  thronged  in  tens  ofthousands  and  took  to  streets. Workers-students-youth and people at large sought for every chanceto vent out their feelings. Opinions started gatheringagainst  saffronization of education,  demolition ofschool education through no-detention policy andhigher  education  through  various  measures  andcurbing of autonomy of educational-social-culturalinstitutions by any and every means. People werebecoming vocal in  public    against  rampant  price-rise,  shameless  brushing  aside  of  poll-pledges,meaningful silence  of the leader at the helm of thecountry,  the Prime Minister,  even  in  the  face  ofmost  serious,  brute  atrocious attacks on  women-children-minority and dalit people,   while  posingstage-managed  man-ki-baat  (i.e.,  opening mind)to  narrate  some  wishful  achievements.  Peoplewere  also  speaking  out  vigorously  against    theravaging effects of demonetization, GST and suchother measures. The said  assembly elections wereheld  amidst  all  these.  And,  as  usual  for  recentelections  in  the  country,  the present  elections  tooproved farcical. There was no genuine concern forpeople’s  problems;  no  serious  political  issuestouched  upon.  Instead  the  monopoly-controlledmedia  along with other administrative machineriesmade  it  a point  to  unleash  a  frantic  campaign  tomisguide  and misdirect  people’s  rising    sentimentagainst  the ruling  RSS-BJP. They feared  it mighttend  to  develop  to  the  extent  of  questioning  theexploitative  capitalist  system.  So  there  werecrocodile  tears  for  the  peasants.  And  mostprominently,  there  were  liberal  flow  of  money, accompanied  by  incessant  and  unbridled mutualhate campaign and slandering among the politicalparties, particularly the Congress and the BJP,  thattoo  mostly  including  below-the-belt  personalattacks.  The  Congress  had  been  discarded  anddriven out from  power by people  for their nakedlypro-monopolist anti-people  rule. That made  wayfor  the  BJP  to  come  to  power.  Now  sensingpeople’s mindset  increasingly  turning  against  theRSS-BJP combine, the same Congress jumped intothe  fray  to  reap  the harvest.  The  ruling  class,  the

monopolists,    also got  the  scent. They  came outwith their moneybag-media and ancillaries  to standbehind the Congress to push it up. The results wereas  narrated above,  though    those were  far  from atotal  rout  of  the RSS-BJP. There were  marginaldifferences  in  some  cases;  sometimes  the  fightwas  neck-to-neck,  see-sawing.  Nevertheless,  thediscredited,  disowned    Congress,  fondly  beingnicknamed by the monopoly-backed media as  the‘grand old  party’,  has  again been pushed  to  ridethe Trojan horse of power in  three vital heartlandstates  of  the  country.

The  second  issue  in  judging  the  electionresult  in  question  is,  how could  it  turn out  to  beso? How could the monopolists once again befoolthe  disarrayed,  devastated  masses  of  commonpeople  to  toss  them as a  shuttle  between  the  twomost  favoured bourgeois  parties,  the BJP  or  theCongress,  thereby  keeping  the  two-partyparliamentary  system    go  on  well-greased  andamply fuelled? The answer is plain and evident asdaylight. There was no alternative present  for  thepeople which  could  have made    the monopolistsand their machineries including media think twicebefore playing this game.. And such an alternativecould  be  found only  in  a  viable  and genuine  leftand  democratic  combination  at  the  core  withother  regional  or  such  forces  ready  to  standagainst  the  rising  fascistic   menace    of  the RSS-BJP . Only such an alternative combination couldhave  channelized  the  rising  wrath  of  peopleagainst  the    economic  onslaught  and  political-cultural-  even  social-familial    overbearing of  theRSS-BJP  combine  into  formidable  massmovements  on  each and  every  burning  problemof people’s  life  and livelihood.   And  if and whenany  election  would    have  come  in  course,  thestruggling people could  have  fought  that  electionled by their genuine leadership to be found in theleft  and democratic  forces. They would  not  haveto  seek  for  forces  once  discarded.  But  to  thedismay  and  disadvantage    of  the  oppressed, exploited  people,  the  forces  which  still  claimthemselves  and  are known to  a  section of  peopleas  leftists,  even  big  lefts,  did  not  bother  abouttaking  up  this  task  of  developing  andstrengthening  this  alternative  which  peopleneeded.  On  the  contrary,  they,  namely  the  CPI-CPI(M)  as well  as  their  allies,  preferred  to  towbehind  the  Congress  with  the  hope  of  earningsome benefits  in  the parliamentary politics, a fewseats  here  and  there,  some  hobnobbing  in  thecorridor of power. And while doing that  they didnot  care  to  fight  against  and  resist  the  dangerousideology of the RSS-BJP combine and would not,for  sure, do  it even  in  future. On  the contrary,  inthe name of  fighting  that  combine,  they brandedand  still  brand  the Congress  secular, which  itselfall  through  played  communal  cards  wheneverneeded for   their vote politics.

Anybody  with  real  concern  for  people’smisery will note that this kind of politics has takenits toll, as could be expected. Once more with allfanfare  the bourgeois parliamentary  system of  theIndian  capitalist  state  has  successfullyaccomplished  another  electoral  fiasco,  a  nastygame  for  money-media-muscle  andadministration.  They  play  together  and  haveplayed  this  time  too,  to  gauge  the  mass  mind,

chalk out the requirement and desire of  the rulingclass  ,  the  monopolists  and    then  arrange  thepawns,  knights,  bishops    etc.  to  bring  thecheckmate,  that  is  to  push  up  a  favoured, subservient  force   making  it acceptable to peopleand  bring  it    to    power  to  ensure  smoothcontinuation of  the  exploitative    system as  usual. This  time  it  has    dangerous  consequenceswhatever  be  the  facts  and  figures  of  the  lastassembly  elections.  Not  only  an  anti-peopledisowned  force    could make  a  comeback.  In  theaftermath of  the  elections and using  their  results, there  is  well-vamped  propaganda  at  differentlevels,  to refurbish  the fallen  image of  that force, the  Congress. Neither  the    RSS-BJP  combineand  their  fringe  organizations  could be  isolateddecisively. Side by side, even the real viable forcefor  people,  the  genuine  left  and  democraticcombination   could not be evolved to give defeatto  both  these partners  of  the bourgeois  two-partysystem.  People  remain  in  the  same  dungeon.Erasing how  the  Congress  fleeced  people  to  theskeleton  through years  since  independence,  theyare again being dragged into the illusion of solvingtheir problems  through election with all  tall  talksand day-dreams only to wait for the next election,At  the  same  time,  the  urgently  required  intenseideological  struggle    could  not  be  generatedagainst  the  vicious  campaign  of  this  RSS-BJPcombine  that  they      have been carrying on in  thename  of Hindutva and  religion.

This way  the  said  assembly  elections  wereover. Now   keeping  their  results before  people, attempts  are  being  made  to  also  manipulate  theensuing  parliamentary  election.  The  bourgeoispetty  bourgeois parties  which  cannot  but  act  asfaithful  subservient  political  managers  of  theruling  monopolists  for  their  own  survival  andnourishment, as  also  those claiming  themselves asleftists,  but  keen  to  remain  in  the  corridors  ofbourgeois  power,  are  enthusiastically  joining  thebandwagon. They  look primarily  at  one  singulargoal.  They  wish  to  ensure  that  the  rising  massresentments against  the RSS-BJP  rule do not  gotoo high and too deep as to question and endangerthe  existing  system. Rather  no  stone  is  being  leftunturned to see that people’s wrath is neutralized, channelized  and  consumed  into  the  hollow, fruitless whirlwind of bourgeois vote politics. So,the question people    really confront  is what  is  tobe  done  in  the  face  of  this  barrage;  what  thesituation demands,  how to  achieve  it.

Repeatedly in the past, people of this countryhave  found,  as  also  struggling  people  over  theworld  have  also  witnessed,  that  exploited, oppressed  masses  face  no  alternative    but  todevelop  powerful people’s movement, united andsustained to wrest  even the minimum relief    fromthe  rulers  of  their  heartless  exploitativediscriminatory  capitalist  system.    Today  peoplemust  again  come  to  their  senses. With  the  rulingclass,  the monopolists,  playing newer  and newertricks  to keep their exploitative system  running ,the people have no  choice other  than  to fight  forevery burning issue of their life and livelihood. Andsuch movements  cannot end  in one  strike or  two,in  one  massive  demonstration  or  a  few.  Thosemust be organized to build up into sustained struggle

The  Renaissance  that  the  Kerala  ChiefMinister  and  the  CPI(M)  is  talking  about  hasnothing  to  do  with  the  real  Renaissance.  Theessence of  the Renaissance  movement  in  Keralawas  based  on  democratic  values  and  humanistculture. The Women’s wall is led by a governmentthat  has  no  tolerance  for  opposing  views.  Whatcredibility does the government have that is tryingto  smother  opposing  views  by  imposing  mediaban, while  talking aloud about Renaissance ? Theorganizations that were once formed with the aimof  fighting  not  only  the  caste  discriminationsbetween  upper  and  lower  castes  but  also  thediscriminations  and  evil  practices within  variousdivisions within  castes  have  later  degraded  intopolitical  pressure  groups  and  vote  banks  in  theinterest  of  a  privileged  section  within  therespective caste group. Not only have they turnedaway from the values upheld by the leaders of theRenaissance  movement,  the  present  day  casteorganizations  are  engaged  in  just  the  opposite. What  kind  of  regain  of  Renaissance  values  can

be  achieved  by  joining  hands  with  these  casteforces  with  no  democratic  values  or  ideal  andwhose sole aim is  to  garner some benefits for  thecaste  leaders  by  hobnobbing  with  the  people  inpower?

The  concept  ‘What  is  right  for  god  is  rightand  what  is  not  is  wrong’  was  the  ideologicalbasis  of  feudalism. Contrary  to  that  the  scientificmethod  of  examining  everything  on  the basis  oflogical  analysis  and    thus arriving  at  the  truth  isthe  life  outlook  that    the Renaissance  put  forth.Beginning  with  the  famous  declaration  ofNarayana  Guru  “we have  no  religion  or  caste”,the Renaissance movement  in  Kerala went  aheadfurther  to  the  extent  of  stating  “man  needs  noreligion,  no  caste  and  no  god”.  The  neo-renaissance  in  the  name  of  entry  of  women  inSabarimala will  only help  to  strengthen what  theRenaissance movement  once  rejected. From  thisangle  if  we  view,  the  ‘Women’s  wall’  does  notpromote scientific outlook, but blindness.

Similar to the gimmicks of the Sangh Parivarlike  Ram  temple,  cow  protection  etc,  the‘Women’s wall’ is also aimed at vote politics. TheBJP  in  the state  is  trying  to play vote politics  byopposing  the women  entry  into  Sabarimala. Theunwise  steps  taken  by  the  state  government  onthe  basis  of  cunning  calculations  has  given  anopportunity  for  the  BJP  to  play  its  communaltactics. There  is  no  doubt  that  people  in  Keralawill have  to pay  a heavy price for  this.

Looking  from a  legal  angle  the verdict  may

SUCI (Communist) Kerala State Committee on the‘Women’s wall’ organized under the patronage of CPI(M) in Kerala

be correct. But a political movement, particularlya revolutionary one should  take  steps consideringthe  necessity  of  the  time.  To  complete  theunfinished  tasks  of  renaissance  is  the need of  thepresent  day.  To  educate  the  people  to  viewnatural  phenomena  and  life  with  a  scientificapproach,  to  equip  the  people  to  adopt  seculardemocratic  values  in  their day  to day  life etc  arethe  important  tasks  to  be  accomplished.  In  thename  of  Renaissance  what  the  CPI(M)  ispropagating will  not  help  in  accomplishing  thesetasks,  rather  it  will  help  to  promote  blindness.  Itwill only help the reactionary caste and communalorganizations to  take roots with accelerated pace.Which  of  the  unaccomplished  tasks  of  theRenaissance movement will  be  accomplished  bythe  entry  of women  in Sabarimala?

Democratic  mass  movement  is  the  onlyway  to  build  up  people’s  unity  and  defeatcommunalism.  It  is  also  the  training  ground  toequip  the  people  to  view  life  problems  in  arealistic way. There  are  no other  short  cuts. Thecommon people  being ground under  the yoke ofcapitalism have  to  be  brought  to  the  streets  as  aunited  single  force  on  the  basis  of  real  issuesaffecting  their  life  and  upholding  higher  ethicsand democratic  values. This  is  the  real continuityof  the  Renaissance  movement.  The  ‘Women’swall’  does  not  propose  such  a  path  ofmovement.

SUCI (C) demandswithdrawal ofgovernment notificationfor snooping

Comrade  Provash  Ghosh,  GeneralSecretary, SUCI(C), has issued the followingstatement  on 22  December,  2018:

Yesterday,  Prime  Minister  Modi-ledBJP  government  issued  a  notification  thatjust    on  suspicion of  treachery,  10  agenciesempowered  by  the  government  canintercept,  monitor  and  encrypt  anyinformation  which  a  citizen  of  India  hasstored in his computer. The service providersare  liable  to  share  the  information.  It  isclearly  a brazen  attack on  the privacy  of  acitizen and smacks of  a fascistic design. TheInformation  Technology  act  by  which  thepresent Modi government is trying to destroythe private space of a citizen was enacted in2009  by  the  previous    Congress-  led  UPAgovernment  which  proves  that  whicheverbourgeois  party  sits  in  power  takes  recourseto  spying  on  citizens  in  order  to  save  itselffrom people‘s wrath.

We  demand  that  the  decision  bewithdrawn  immediately  and  appeal  to  thepeople  to  raise  the voice of  protest  againstthis  anti-people  decision  of    the  BJPgovernment.

Thousands of Retired Workersin Spain Demand ‘Decent Pensions’

Starting  in  January  last  in  Bilbao  andspreading  to  over  200  cities  and  towns  acrossSpain,  a movement  of  retired people  culminatedin massive  rallies  in  several  cities  of  the  countryon 15  December  2018. Among  these,  there weremore  than 25000  strong  rallies  of  retired  peopleand  supporters    in  Bilbao  and  Madrid.  Theydemanded  “decent”  pensions  of  at  least  1,080Euros  a month, and yearly  updates  according  tothe Consumer Price  Index  (CPI)  and  raised    theslogans  “whoever  is  ruling,  pensions  must  bedefended,”  and  “Our  future:  there’s no  solutionwithout  mobilization!”,  “old  but  not  fool”  and“decent pensions now!” The State Coordinator forthe Defense of  the Public Pension System led themovement with supports from  other organizationslike  the  Unions  Solidarity  of  Basque  Workers(ELA),  the  Nationalist  Workers’  Committees(LAB) and the Workers’ Commissions of Euskadi(CCOO).

The movement is striking on several  counts.

It  is  massive,  united  and  sustained,    attractingsupport  from common masses of  toiling people aswell.  It  refused  to  give  in  to  the  “ridiculous”increase  of  pensions  by 0.25 percent,  announcedin  February.  On  the  contrary,  the  coordinatordeclared  in a widely circulated public statement  :“With our  work  we have built  a Pensions PublicSystem based on  contributions  and we  won’t  letbanks,  insurance companies  and  investment  fundsto  take  them  away  from  us  with  the  privatepension plans.” The  leadership of  the movementscathingly    criticized  the  two-party  ruling  systemof the country and its participating  parliamentarypolitical  parties    for  their  failure    to  solve  the“fundamental problems” of the retired workers byawarding decent  pensions  that  should  increase  atpar  with    real  inflation.    All  these  attested  topeople’s  power  in  their  unity  and  the  fact  thatmovement  is  the  only  course  before  exploitedpeople. Struggling people of Spain also expressedtheir    fraternity    with  the  recent  movement  of

French  people  againstfuel  tax  and  otherissues.  It  forms  animportant element in thefast  spreadingmovements  across  thecontinent of Europe. Weearnestly  express  ourhope  that    themovement  finds  aleadership  to  guide  itsuccessfully  to  desiredends.
