Installation Options The AspenTech Installation Browser allows you to browse through Aspen industry solutions as well as suite solutions prior to installation. The Browser has two tabs, Install by aspenONE Application and Install by Product.

• From the Install by aspenONE Application tab, you can browse by Industry, Business Area, and application. For details, please see the aspenONE Applications section in Chapter 2. Each aspenONE aplication requires a specific license agreement. You should use this tab only if you have licensed an application.

• From the Install by Product tab, you can browse for products as they are included in the AspenTech Suites. In this tab, products are organized in the “classic” manner. You should use this tab to carry out a product installation.

Note: If you are upgrading an existing product installation and your system administrator has not given you any notification of a change in your contract since November 2004 you should install products using the Install by Product tab. If you are not sure whether your company has licensed applications, please contact your system administrator.

Product Install 1 Insert any aspenONE product DVD into your DVD Reader. The AspenTech

Installation Browser appears.

2 Select the Install by aspenONE Application or Install by Product tab depending on how you want to browse through the available products.

3 Select the appropriate application or product and review the contents displayed on the right to confirm the product(s) that you want to install are part of the selection.

3 Installation Process 19

Page 22: aspenONE2006

4 Click the Install button. If a message prompts you to insert a different

DVD, select that DVD from your package of DVDs and insert the requested DVD into your DVD Reader.

Notes:

• It is important that you follow the product installation procedures as described in the installation guide for the product you are installing. The installation guides for ALL products are located on the aspenONE Documentation DVD.

• If the installation requires you to install software from more than one DVD, you will be prompted to insert the next DVD.

• You can also install AspenTech software by sharing or copying the contents of the aspenONE DVDs to a network-accessible drive. If you are installing from a network drive, be sure to map a drive to the location prior to installation.

Extracting a Product Installation Kit from a Suite The Product Installation Kit utility allows system administrators the option of making a limited set of AspenTech products available for installation by end users. This option is designed for enterprise clients who want to deploy a selected set of AspenTech products to their end users.

The Product Installation Kit utility takes in the location of a product's MSI file (*.msi) from the aspenONE DVDs and the directory location where it should make a copy of the selected product’s installation kit. When the utility is run, it creates an installation kit for the selected product in the specified directory. End users then run their product installations from that directory.

To create a product installation kit: 1 Determine the AspenTech product that you want to make available in the

installation kit. You may make only one product installation kit at a time.

2 Insert the aspenONE 2006 Administration DVD into your DVD reader (or, if the aspenONE media has been copied to a network, open the aspenONE Infrastructure folder). Using Windows Explorer, browse to aspenone2006admdvd | Tools and double-click SeparateProdKit.exe. The Generate Product Installation Kit dialog box will display.

20 3 Installation Process

Page 23: aspenONE2006

3 In the Select the product's MSI file from suite CD-ROM text box, enter the path to the MSI file for which you want to create an installation kit, or click the browse (…) to browse the DVD for the MSI file.

4 In the Directory to copy the installation kit* text box, enter the path to where you want the installation kit to be copied. Typically, this will be the shared directory that end users will access to run the AspenTech product installations.

5 Click Generate Kit. The utility will create an installation kit for the selected MSI file and copy it to the specified directory.

6 Repeat steps 2-5 for each product for which you want to create an installation kit.

Note: If you are extracting a product from the aspenONE 2006 Administration DVD, there is an additional requirement to copy the \core\ directory from the DVD into the directory where the product was extracted.

7 Notify end users of the shared directory where the installation kits are located.

8 This step describes how to initiate a product installation using a product installation kit. From the target computer, browse to the shared directory where the kits are located and double click a product's .msi file. The AspenTech Installation Wizard will display. Please refer to each product's installation guide for specific information about installing each product.

Installation Logging Installation log files can be enabled through two options:

• Option 1: Using the regular computer policies for Windows Installer

• Option 2: By setting EnableLogging under HKLM\Software\AspenTech\Setup. The installer only checks for the existence of EnableLogging. It can be set to anything.

Log files are created under the %TEMP% directory of the user logged on to the computer. If using option 1, refer to the platform SDK help on “Logging Policy” for more information on the valid logging levels. Using option 2 generates a detailed log file that is useful for debugging installation problems. The EnableLogging option is supported by both the standard interactive install from the product DVDs and the Silent Install (ATRunUnattended.exe).

If none of the above options are used, the installer generates a basic log file under the %TEMP% directory of the user logged onto the computer. The log file will have the same name as the product name.

Silent Install AspenTech provides a way to automatically install AspenTech software to multiple computers to ensure a consistent configuration of the software on all target computers called the Aspen Silent Install tool.

The Aspen Silent Install tool allows system administrators to create XML files that control the unattended installation of AspenTech tools to individual

3 Installation Process 21

Page 24: aspenONE2006

computers without requiring user interaction. You can create different XML files to deploy unique configurations to different groups of computers.

Using this tool, the information that would be entered as part of a standard install is stored in an XML file. This XML file is then used as an input to the installs, which can run unattended without needing to prompt the user for any information. The information in the XML file includes: • What products to install.

• What features of the products to install.

• Where to install the products.

• Where the Aspen Framework (AFW) server is located (if AFW is used).

• Where the ADSA server is located (if ADSA is used).

• Any other information collected by a dialog box.

Deploying a common Aspen client application configuration is a three-step process:

• Record the installation XML file.

• Create a shortcut to the AtRunUnattended.exe file.

• Invoke the installation XML file from the client computer.

The XML file must be generated on a system that matches the configuration of the destination computers. For example, if you wish to generate an XML file for Product A, B, and C, then you need to ensure that A, B, or C is not already installed on the recording system.

Operating System Requirements The Aspen Silent Install tool may be run with the following operating systems and corresponding service packs: • Windows Server 2003 SP1

• Windows 2000 SP 4

• Windows XP SP2

Recording an XML file The first step of the deployment process is recording the configuration XML file. You may record the XML file on any computer as long as you reference the network share where the installation kit will reside.

To record the XML file: 1 Click Start | Run…. Enter the following command in the Open: field:

msiexec /i \\myserver\myshare\mysuite.msi RECORDRESPONSE="1"

where \\myserver\myshare\ is the name of a network share that contains the new installation kit and mysuite.msi is the name of the AspenTech product

22 3 Installation Process

Page 25: aspenONE2006

suite from which you are installing products, for example, AspenEngineeringSuite2006.msi. This share must be accessible by the client computers; the XML file specifically refers to this share.

Notes: • Running this command invokes an installation procedure that appears to

be installing the software. However, it is only obtaining the information needed to install the software and storing it in an XML file. No products are installed during this procedure.

• The sequence of the dialogs may be slightly different depending on the product suite that is being installed.

The AspenTech Installer wizard appears.

Creating a Shortcut for Unattended Client Installations This step creates a shortcut to the AtRunUnattended.exe program so that users can easily run the program from their client computer.

To create a shortcut to AtRunUnattended.exe: 1 Open Windows Explorer on the server computer and browse to the shared

folder containing AtRunUnattended.exe and the XML file. The AtRunUnattended.exe is located on the aspenONE 2006 Administration DVD in the aspenone2006admdvd\Tools directory.

2 Right-click in the right pane and select New | Shortcut. 3 Type the name AtRunUnattended.exe and click Next.

4 Type the name of the shortcut and click Finish.

3 Installation Process 31

Page 34: aspenONE2006

5 Right-click the new shortcut and select Properties.

6 Change the Target to include the XML file. Make sure that both AtRunUnattended.exe and the XML file use the same share name. For example:

\\myserver\myshare\AtRunUnattended.exe /I | /S \\myserver\myshare\ProcessExplorer.xml [/noreboot | /forcereboot]

o Either the /I or /S switch is required. The /I switch causes the unattended install to display some status information as it is running. Use the /S switch to make the install completely “silent”.

o The /noreboot switch is optional and does not reboot the computer after an unattended install.

o The /forcereboot is optional and forces the computer to reboot after an unattended install.

If neither the /noreboot nor /forcereboot switch is specified, the tool will automatically reboot the computer if required.

7 Click OK.

8 Notify client users with the name and location of the shortcut or you may include the shortcut in an e-mail that you send to the client users.

Note: A log file, such as, "ATRunAttended Mon Jun 16 20.13.02 2003.log" is written to the %temp% directory of the user logged on to the computer.

Installing using the XML file The next step of the deployment process is to run the configuration XML file from the client computer. This will install the configuration that you specified during the XML-recording process to the client computer.

Modifying the XML file

If you used the Generate Product Installation Kit utility (SeparateProdKit.exe) to extract specific product installation kits and want to use those files for the silent install, you must edit each product's MSI file path in the XML file. For more information about the Generate Product Installation Kit utility, see "Extracting a Product Installation Kit from a Suite" in this chapter.

The XML file has an element <PRODUCTN> for each product that was selected when the XML file was recorded. Each element contains a file path to the product's MSI file. N is a running number 1, 2, 3 and so on. A sample element in XML will look like,

<PRODUCT2>Y:\aspenone2006dvd6\Aspen Plus 2006.msi</PRODUCT2>.

Each product's MSI file path may need to be edited to include the path where the Generate Product Installation Kit utility copied the MSI file.

Open the XML file in a text editor, such as, Microsoft Notepad and modify the msi file path to the directory where the product's installation kit was copied.

32 3 Installation Process

Page 35: aspenONE2006

To install using the XML file: 1 From the client computer, open Windows Explorer and browse to the

location of the shortcut following your system administrator’s guidelines. 2 Double-click on the shortcut to run the AtRunUnattended.exe program.

The Aspen client application configuration that you specified during the XML-recording process is installed.

Where is the product documentation?

To access the documentation, insert the aspenONE Documentation DVD into your DVD Reader.

What if I do not have a DVD Reader?

If you do not have a DVD Reader, please contact AspenTech Support http://support.aspentech.com.

I cannot find the products I have installed previously. Where are they?

AspenTech has reduced the number of products it supports by retiring some and combining others into other existing products. In some cases, a product may have been retired, and some products that were previously installed individually have been combined into other products and are no longer available separately. There are also a small number of products that are currently sold but were not available when the DVD set was produced. These products can be downloaded from the Support website.

For more information, check the Product Lifecyle page on the AspenTech Support Website, which has a listing of retired and combined products.

If you cannot find your product, contact AspenTech Support.
