PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Hello Everyone: I wish to start by welcom-ing Kevin Flaherty, Trevor Pinto and Gary Stroh to our Chapter! Get involved, come out to meetings and meet our members. This year we again plan on having a few meetings at
other locations to accommodate mem-bers that live a great distance from our normal dinner location. I also want to wish all our members a very Happy Holiday! Our lives are so busy we really use this Holiday to refo-cus on Family and the reason we work so hard. I want to congratulate Michael Yearian for joining our Board in the position of Affiliate Liaison. Mike will be responsible for arranging the table top presenter for each meeting. Thank you Michael for your time and desire to help our grow-ing Chapter. We are still looking for a young Engineer that would like to get involved with our board in the position of “AYP” ASPE Young Professional Liaison. To qualify you need to be under 35 years old and be willing to work with young Engineer’s around the country with other chapters. I know we are all busy but when you decide to get involved with our chapter you will understand and recognize how important it is to support our members
and feel a great sense of accomplish-ment. One item I must bring up is our ongoing work to visit Engineering schools and Firms to present our Society and all its benefits and accomplishments. We are asking you all take a look at what we do to enhance and promote the profes-sion of plumbing engineering while as-sisting in improving the safety and well-being of the public on a global scale. One last important notice for our mem-bers is our involvement with a very spe-cial program called Future City Compe-tition. Our chapter has made a dona-tion to support this endeavor. This up-coming year the competition will be held on January 21st at Archbishop Car-roll High School in Radnor Pa. We will be walking the floor reviewing the Future city models and present an award for “Plumbing Innovation” to a school that demonstrates the best design in Plumb-ing, I cannot express the feeling you re-ceive when talking to all these young middle school children so excited to explain their design and how it will work for their “ FUTURE CITY“. Have a wonderful Holiday and New Year Mike

TECHNICAL CORNER
Merry Christmas Everyone! Hope everyone recovered from Thanksgiving! Last month, I talked about next year’s Technical Symposi-um being in Toronto. Well it is not in Toronto, the
Technical Symposium is being held in Montreal,
QC, Canada from October 19-22, 2017. Still in Canada, but on the east side. So, get your passports ready and sign up for the Symposium.
In November, Jeff McBride showed those who were there, about Medical Gas instal-lation issues. What to look for and what not
to do concerning medical gas piping. Normally, zone valve boxes (ZVB) are piped left-to-right through the valve with the pressure gauge after (downstream) of the valve (right side of the box). He showed how an installation had the pres-sure gauge on the left and the ZVB was physically installed upside down to allow right-to-left piping. ZVB are installed with easy access and not in the room with the outlets. ZVB and outlets have a wall sepa-rating them. Jeff showed a couple of in-stallation with the ZVB behind a held open door (no access) and another with the ZVB in the same room as the outlets. Tank manifolds are required to be in a dedicat-

LEGISLATIVE NEWS Greetings fellow ASPE-rs! As a follow-up on my Novem-ber article on the IAPMO pro-cess to update the plumbing code, in December’s Plumb-ing Engineer – Jay Egg wrote an article on the “Code Up-date Process” (page 34) that I think you’ll find interesting as
he guides you through the committee pro-cess of developing the codes and standards we utilize today. Another great article this month in P/E is on “Fire protection Engineering for Facilities” by Sam Dannaway (page 38). There have been several changes and improvements made to the UFC 3-600-01 for army projects
that become effective on August 8, 2016. We hope to see you at this month’s dinner meeting, please remember it’s being pre-sented a week earlier than normal on Thurs-day, December 15th. The topic this month is on the New Jersey Standard Plumbing Code Updates and will be presented by Thomas Pitcherello of the NJ Department of Commu-nity Affairs. Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, Happy Kwanza and a safe and prosperous New Year!

2016 FUTURE CITY COMPETITION ANNOUNCEMENT
Hi All, It’s that time of year again. The school year is off to a great start for the Future City Competi-tion. To date, 40 schools have signed up and have started designing their cities of the future. Our greatest need at this stage of the competition is for mentors. Each school is assigned a mentor to work with the students and share their real world experiences to help them develop their future city. Just 1 or 2 hours a week can make a big difference in how students approach their project and how they start to address it. The following is a the current list of schools that need mentors: G.A. Stetson Middle School West Chester, PA Great Valley Middle School Malvern, PA Holy Family Regional Catholic School Levittown, PA Independence Charter School Philadelphia, PA JR Fugett Middle School West Chester, PA Sacred Heart Havertown, PA Southern Middle School Sinking Springs, PA St Albert the Great Huntington Valley, PA St Mary Schwenksville, PA Texas Avenue School Atlantic City, NJ Please let me know if you are interested in working with any of the schools listed above. If you’d like to be a mentor but don’t see a school in your area, send me an e-mail and I’ll keep you posted as schools register. Please visit our website at www.futurecityphilly.org and “Click here to sign up as a Volunteer” on the top left of the page. There you can register to be a mentor, judge, or general volunteer. We will need judges and general volunteers for the day of the competition, which is schedule for Janu-ary 21, 2017. It will be held again at Archbishop Carroll High School. Any questions please contact me via e-mail or phone. Please feel free to forward this e-mail to your friends, co-workers, and technical society members. Karen R. ed room with proper ventilation, not a storage room with shelves of storage products. Bulk (liquid) storage tanks are required to be protected from damage with bollards and away from vehicle parking and accidents. Jeff show several installation where the cars were parked next to chainlinked fences without ade-quate clearance or bollards. Did you know that if liquid oxygen were to spill on asphalt surface, a fire would start? Which is why Emergency Oxygen Supply boxes are required to have a concrete pad and
the box is require to have a lock. These are just some of things Jeff talked dis-cussed.
In December, Tom Pitcherello of New Jer-sey Department of Community Affairs will be discussing the latest updates to the National Standard Plumbing Code 2015. Anyone doing projects in New Jersey knows Tom is the authority on New Jersey plumbing code.
So, come to the dinner meetings, hear everything our speaker have to say, and possibly learn something new to tell your associates.
