WELCOME NEW MEMBERSASSOCIATE

Go to www.petroclub.net, your username is your member number and your password is your last name, all lower case (you can change your password after initial logon). Once you are logged on, you can do everything from checking your account to booking reservations.

Under My Account, you can manage your personal profile. This includes updating your contact information (phone, address, email), uploading your picture so that staff and other members can easily associate your name and face, checking on existing reservations, and viewing both your current and past statements.

In the Dining section, you can make reservations, see the calendar and check out menus. The daily buffet menu and weekly specials can also be found on the website’s homepage under quick links. Dietary needs can also be met by letting us know in advance of your arrival.

Learn more about special events planning under the events tab. You can request a date for an event under that tab as well, which will alert one of our staff members to call you back and help plan your occasion. If you’re looking to book the Prudhoe or Swanson Rooms for a smaller party, you can do that by reserving the date you want as you would a regular dining reservation. Remember, there is no charge for members to use the Club’s side rooms.

You’ll find a link to our reciprocal clubs under Our Club, where clubs are listed by state. Click on the state you want to visit and all the clubs we have reciprocity with will show up. To visit a club, please email [email protected] with your travel dates and tell us which club you’d like to visit at least 7 days prior to departure for a letter of introduction.

Learn about events under the Social tab. Go to Club Calendar to pull up calendar of events. If you see an event you wish to attend, click on it for details and then hit “click here to register.” Follow the prompts and you’re all set – you will also receive an email confirmation of your registration.Under Our Club you’ll find news and announcements, current and past copies of the newsletter, a member directory, information on the Club’s governance, feedback forms and information on reciprocal clubs. And if you haven’t done so already, visit the PCA Facebook page for events, photos and Club happenings at https://www.facebook.com/PetroleumClubofAnchorage.

You know the website, but do you know how to use it? Since we can’t see you in person for the foreseeable future, online communication will be essential to stay connected. And once life is back to normal, you’ll still benefit from knowing how to use the PCA website. Read on to learn how to get the most out of your membership with this PCA website tutorial.

How do I log onto the PCA website? Where can I find out more information about the Club’s food and beverage service?

Dear Members,

At the time of this writing the Mayor of Anchorage has shut down the city’s bars and restaurants for the month of March and part of April over Coronavirus (COVID-19) concerns. Please be cautious, stay healthy and be prepared for possible changes to the number of events on our social calendar due to the potential impact of the virus here in Alaska. We will all need to be patient and roll with the punches at this time of uncertainty. We will keep you updated regarding PCA activities as all this evolves. This historic event is having numerous repercussions on our businesses, the global economy, and society at large. We all need to be cognizant of preventative measures and the symptoms. Up to date and accurate information can be acquired through the Center for Disease Control at

www.cdc.gov/COVID19

More troubling news that affects us all is the recent drop in oil prices. Russia and Saudi Arabia have started a very ugly oil price war and American oil companies may become the biggest victims. This of course has a tremendous impact on our Alaskan economy with how closely it is directly tied to oil prices. The stock market is also falling at recent historic levels and this all makes for scary and uneasy times. What better way to ease your concerns or at least vent about them than by connecting with your friends, family, and other PCA members via text, email, Zoom, FaceTime or a phone call for virtual sharing of adult beverages and/or uplifting and inspirational conversation.

Despite all the doom and gloom affecting our world at present, this too shall come to pass and with some time things will return to normal.  Spring break-up in

the 49th state is always filled with trying to dodge potholes that mysteriously appear at inconvenient places in the road, more frequent trips to the car wash to clean your machine from the melting runoff after plowing through mud puddles and getting splashed by other vehicles doing the same, and some occasional snowfall just to remind you where you live. With all this springtime mess comes great anticipation of summer and all the excitement, opportunity, and abundancy (think salmon) that our Solstice season creates here in Alaska.  I look forward to seeing you all here at the Club when the time is right, this viral threat is contained, and the weather entices us outside to enjoy the patio. Until then, I wish you and your families all the best, but most of all good health.

 Cheers to all of you,

- Tom Redmond, President

Need a mental break in these challenging times? Try a virtual escape or plan a trip for the future when travel is safe again by checking out the 100+ reciprocal clubs we have around the globe at www.petroclub.net.

Virtual Vacation

The PCA is pleased to announce a new member of our growing family of reciprocal clubs: The Sutter Club, located in Sacramento, California. The Sutter Club was founded in 1889 by a group of the city’s civic and social leaders. Among its founders were the original “Forty-Niners,” men who traveled West to seek their fortunes with the promise of gold. Their children and generations to follow continued as members of the Sutter Club. Members have also included Sacramento’s business leaders, California Governors, and U.S. Supreme Court Justices Earl Warren and Anthony Kennedy. It is the social hub of Sacramento with its dynamic membership of accomplished professionals, outstanding citizens, and community leaders.

The Sutter Club is in the heart of Sacramento, just one block away from California’s State Capitol building. It is also located within easy reach of wine country – an hour from Napa Valley and the Sonoma Coast, an hour from the Sierra Foothills, and just 30 minutes north of Lodi, home to many excellent wines. There is no on-site lodging, but there are several hotels within walking distance of the Club.

More than just a place for an unforgettable meal from the expert kitchen staff, the Sutter Club offers an ambiance of distinction like no other in the Sacramento area. The exceptional staff can help you plan any wedding, party, meeting, or other reception flawlessly from start to finish. Member events include wine dinners, farm to table meals, holiday parties, and even a rooftop fight night event. You can expect concierge-style services each time you visit, with services such as shoe-shining, dry-cleaning, and door-to-door executive transportation.

Designed, funded, and built by its early members, the Club holds an award as a “Building of Distinction” and is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. To preserve this historic Club, its Membership and Board of Directors created The Sutter Club Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public charitable organization. Its donations protect and preserve the facilities for future generations. If you enjoy a gathering place filled with sophistication, history, fine cuisine, and unrivaled service, then be sure to add The Sutter Club to your next Northern California vacation plans.

The Sutter ClubWelcome to the Family!

Log in with your user name and password, click on the Our Club tab, and then Reciprocal Clubs. There you’ll find a state-by-state listing of clubs with links to their websites and a link to international reciprocal clubs as well. A virtual vacation is better than none - Bon Voyage!

Patio Opening! The days are longer, the sun is a bit brighter, and the snow is slowly melting away. Now all we need is to have the Club reopened! We made some great memories last summer and are looking forward to more good times on the patio in 2020.

Administrative Professionals’ Day

10PCA P IPEL INE NEWS, APRIL 2020

Treat yourself to an exclusive 5-course meal at the Club. PCA Executive Chef John O’Neil will celebrate Spring by using the freshest, most carefully chosen ingredients to prepare and present to you at your table.

For April’s dinner, Chef John will focus on flavors of Spring. Think green, fresh, and new. A full menu will be emailed to registered guests one week prior to the event. You can also check your club emails and/or Facebook page for more details as we get closer to the date.

The PCA Chef’s Table Dinner is $125 per person and includes a glass of Champagne at the start of the evening and a glass of dessert wine at the finish.

Chef’s Table Dinner - Spring is on the Menu...at the next PCA Chef’s Table Dinner, Friday April 24th at 6:00 p.m.

For other courses, we encourage you to choose from either your PCA Wine Locker or our Captain’s List, which contains more than 1200 bottles stored in the Club’s wine room. Ask your experienced server or bartender for suggestions. This dinner is limited to just 30 guests, so register early at www.petroclub.net.

Please continue to check your emails and PCA Facebook page as we get closer to April 24, should the Club still be closed due to government mandates over the Coronavirus. We all need something sweet in these sour times. The comforting aroma of butter, sugar, and chocolate filling your nose followed by the satisfying taste of your concoction melting in your mouth after it comes out of the oven. Baking is a catharsis in these crazy times. A place to turn your attention somewhere else for a few precious minutes and reward yourself with something delicious.

As a mother of two growing boys, ages 10 and 12, who’s favorite question is, “Do we have anything good to eat?” keeping their hollow legs filled is a tall order these days when we’re all trying to limit the number of trips to the grocery store. Somehow my definition of “good” (ie, fruit, vegetables, etc.) isn’t what my boys usually have in mind. Explaining that we only have so much flour, sugar, butter, and eggs in the house – not to mention half a bag of chocolate chips – seemed to fall on deaf ears when my boys couldn’t understand why I wasn’t baking something delicious every day of our social distancing vacation.

Like many families, we’re all home together as the novel Coronavirus spreads across the world. In addition to both me and my husband being fortunate to be able to do our jobs from home, we’re also trying to keep our boys busy. In normal times they would be with their friends learning at school and then after school, playing baseball, basketball, skiing, or ice skating at our neighborhood rink. But now we’re spending more time inside and away from friends. Then one day it dawned on me. Combine their love of baking (and eating) with learning. They’ve baked with me before, but times are different now.

We sat down together and researched historical recipes. Soon images of Johnny Cakes, Apple Bakes, and Stews from the Revolutionary times to World War II flashed across the screen. One common theme we noticed: rationing. How can we satisfy a sweet tooth using the limited amounts of ingredients we have on hand? We talked about what rationing means and read about how people in tough times improvised using whatever they had in the pantry. Subbing oil, lard, apple sauce or peanut butter for real butter, or using honey or molasses in place of sugar.

My sons did not find an exact recipe they wanted to copy, so I challenged them to make up their own. We went over the essential parts of baking, having a fat, flour, some kind of sweetener, and ending up with the right consistency before you put it into the oven. It was a bit messy, but they sure seemed to enjoy the process, which was my goal. Learn a life skill, practice patience and perhaps a bit of science in figuring out the right combination of ingredients to make something edible. Their result was actually pretty good! The boys thought the cookies could have used more sugar, but we thought these treats did a fine job of satisfying our sweet tooth and our mental well-being in this unprecedented time.

Dylan & Chase’s Ration Cookies:1 egg

¼ cup melted butter

½ cup sugar

½ T vanilla extract

1 cup flour

1 tsp baking soda

1 T milk

¼ cup roasted peanuts

½ cup chocolate chips

Bake at 350 for 12-14 minutes

What have you been doing in your free time during the “hunker down” period? Have you learned a new skill or mastered an old one? Email your ideas to [email protected] and we’ll share them with your fellow members.

Our musical guest will be Rick Brooks. For more than 15 years, Rick has been on the cutting edge of acoustic music in Alaska. He’s had thousands of gigs in a multitude of styles, including touring outside of Alaska and appearing on national radio shows like ‘West Coast – Live.”  Rick has performed with many of today’s leading guitarists, including Brit-folk legend John Renbourn and Wings (with Paul McCartney) guitarist Laurence Juber, as well as fingerstyle masters Tim Sparks and Tony McManus.

Rick has opened shows for many of the great acoustic bluesmen such as John Hammond, Paul Geremia, and Guy Davis—as well as for Scottish folk legend Archie Fisher, Gospel/R&B singer Liz Vice, and comic Howie Mandel.

We are hoping to have the Club open by the end of April to welcome Mr. Brooks. Stay tuned to your PCA emails and Facebook page for updates as we get closer to this event.

*Thank you PCA Member Katy Nalley for musician bio.
