CAT SENSE
Does your cat love drinking water running directly from the tap? Cats
prefer their drinking water to be fresh. Keep their water bowls clean.
And change the water daily.
If you find your perfect match at the shelter, and you have room in your home and your heart to help another cat that may be left behind, please be sure to inquire in the shelter office about a “cat companion” for your new kitty. You would be giving your new cat a friend to keep it company when you are away and would be giving a home to another homeless kitty. Cat Companion kitty adoption fees will be deeply discounted. Some of the kitties in the program are shown below. Ask to see Delta, Spice, Caleb, Cally, Pretty Girl, Nicky, and Fresno on your next visit.

Ask about our Cat
Companion Program.
Special Needs . . . Indeed! Anyone who has ever read one of our newsletters knows about the many cats we get that “must be an only cat.” You know the ones. The ones that ab-solutely will not tolerate living with an-other cat. They come and they go, and usually aren’t really that hard to adopt out. I mean, who wouldn’t want a cat that adores humans and wants nothing more than to spend its days sitting on your lap? The other side of the coin are the cats that we get in at the shelter that love other cats but aren’t very fond of people. You may be thinking “what? Is that really true?” You bet it is. These cats are great cats, but they prefer not to be held, or maybe they don’t like to be petted for any length of time, or touched in a certain area. That’s why we’re offering a new matchmaking service we call the Cat Companion Program. You see, we have several cats at the shelter that we have had for quite some time that just aren’t very fond of people, but they bond with other cats. Often their buddy gets ad-opted, leaving them alone, hoping to find a new pal in the cat room. Two of these matches have already been made and the cats are doing very well.
Upcoming Events Pennies 4 Paws The pennies keep rolling in, but school is out now and our biggest fear is that once the kids stop collecting, the count will slow down. Grown-ups, time to step up! You know you all have those little piggy banks and coin jars sitting around the house. Give up those little copper coins to help the Animal Protectors cats and dogs. You won’t even notice they’re gone! They’re just collecting dust in a corner in your kitchen or bedroom in those little jars and coffee cups. Speaking of collecting dust . . . a loyal Animal Protectors’ donor recently approached an A.P. volunteer with a unique, not quite antique, piggy bank full of pennies. She was rear-ranging her living room and was moving a shelving unit from her living room to her gameroom and found a much-loved and cherished piggy bank that belonged to her father. Her dad, Jim, passed away in June of 2000. Jim’s piggy bank full of pennies resided in his daughter’s home for almost 9 years, unopened, a cherished memory of her dad. Jim’s daughter said “please take these pennies for the Pennies 4 Paws fundraiser from Jim, but I get to keep the bank. My dad was an animal lover, the coins will help the animals, but the bank reminds me of him.” Pennies from Heaven? Yeah, we think so! Thanks, Jim!

It’s Flea and Tick Season!
Here at Animal Protectors, we work hard to give our animals the proper pre-ventative treatments during flea and tick sea-son. We want our alumni to get the same treat-ment! Ticks can transmit harmful, even deadly diseases to your pet. Keep your pet safe - don’t forget to administer a topical insecticide such as Frontline or Advantix. Get out your calendar and mark your day - treatment should be done once a month to keep your pet flea and tick free!
We WanT You! Our volunteers spend countless hours helping the hundreds of cats and dogs that we provide temporary shelter for each year. We are always in need of dedicated animal lovers who are willing to sacrifice their time to help our furry friends. Cat Fanciers - Do you like to have a cuddly cat on your lap? How about helping a kitty get exercise by playing with their favorite feather on a stick? Spend time volunteering in our cat room. The more our cats are socialized, the more adoptable they become. Dog Lovers - Shelter dogs give unconditional love, why not show them the same in return? Spend a morning or afternoon walking and playing with our dogs in our play yard. The dogs appreciate the exer-cise, love to play with their toys, and always offer a kiss in return. We also have a need for dog bathers. Office Guru - Do you enjoy working with other people? Does filing, copying, and answering phones get you excited? If it does, we need you! Be the face of Animal Protec-tors by volunteering in our office. We need help with adoptions, greeting the public, and answering important calls regarding our shelter. Foster Angels - We take in too many abandoned puppies that often grow up in our shelter. Do you have room in your home to help train and socialize our puppies so that they may find their forever homes? Foster homes are also needed for some of our adult dogs, even if it’s just to give them a break from shelter life for a while. We also need foster homes for cats. Some of our cats come in un-sure of people and scared of the shel-ter environment. Help them trust again by giving them a comfortable environment. We also need homes to foster pregnant cats and new-born kittens. If you would like to volunteer, contact the shelter or stop in!
Animal Protectors Open House
Animal Protectors threw open their doors to the neighborhood on April 19, hosting an Open House, including refreshments, priz-es, tours of the shelter, and a chance to meet all of the animals. It was a great day, bring-ing together volunteers, the shelter staff, and the community on a mild Spring day. Many supporters of the shelter stopped by to say hello, some new volunteers were signed on, people that have never been to the shelter attended, and there was even one adoption. And what a great day for all of the animals. So many dogs got out to enjoy the weath-er and all the hugs and attention, and the cats had a steady stream of visitors all day. Thanks to everyone who helped make this event a success, especially our good sports “Kitty” (Stefanie) and “Doggie” (Kim).

Cinder is a three year old Lab mix. She came to us un-der horrible circumstances. Her owner reportedly beat her repeatedly for no known reason. As a result, Cinder is very scared of people and would benefit from a gentle owner who is willing to work with her. She just needs someone to help her gain confidence and we believe she will prove to be a loyal companion. She walks pretty well on a leash and once she is comfortable around our shelter workers and volunteers, she gives a lot of love and tons of sloppy kisses.
Bear is a four year old male pit bull mix. While in his cage, Bear can appear a little intimidating, but the truth is, he’s pretty scared. Bear was abandoned by his family at the shelter, so he knows what it’s like to have a nice, comfortable home and then lose it. He does wonder-ful on the leash, and even likes to go for a jog. He will sit loyally next to you, just happy to have a companion. Bear would fit nicely into any home and would love to have the familiar sights and sounds of a home around him once again.

Woohoo! I want to sniff here…now here! That’s Zippy, he’s a great ball of fun! Zippy is part hound, and very curious about his surroundings. He’s not to be ignored, when out and about, Zippy gives a cute little bark around other dogs just so they know he is there. He enjoys his walks, but does pull a little and could use leash training. Zippy would benefit from an active home, and with is gentle personality, would fit in well with children.
Tasha is a three year old boxer mix. Tasha had a home, but they could not keep her due to their young child’s allergies. She enjoys long walks in the yard and will cuddle up to you in the grass on a nice day. Tasha would love to find a home soon, she isn’t very fond of her kennel and has a strong kennel burst. Once outside, she’s a doll with nothing but love to give.
Bambi is a six month old pit mix. She came to us with parvo, knocking on death’s door. But she had the strength to fight through it. She is now healthy and full of energy. Bambi does well with other animals and is always willing to have a good romp in the play yard. She does well in the car, acting as a faithful co-pilot. Bambi is young and would benefit from basic training and obedi-ence. She is very well mannered and would fit nicely into any home, especially a home with another dog. Please don’t let Bambi grow up in the shelter.

Shelotta is a one-year-old female pit bull mix who gives a whole ‘lotta love! Look at her cute face, she just maybe smiling at you! She does very well when it’s time for a bath, and once out of her kennel, does well on a leash. Shelotta is uncom-fortable with her surroundings at the shelter and would love to find her forever home. With a little bit of training, Shelotta would fit into any type of home.

Meet Cinderella, a declawed one-year old calico. She has the sweetest little face, and delicate muted colors of peach, grey and white. Cinderella is as unassuming as her name-sake, quietly tucking herself away in a corner of the cat room. She is likely to be more outgoing in a home after she has adjusted to her new fam-ily. Cinderella previously lived with several cats, as well as a dog, many of which were surrendered to the shelter when their owner was no longer able to care for them. Cinderella is very young to have lost her home, but she is being well cared for at the shelter and is ready for a new family to love. Will you be her Prince Charming?
Looking for a little cat to love that will love you right back? Athena may be the gal for you. Athena approaches visitors for attention and turns on a very loud purr when they hold her. While in foster care, Athena made it well known that she prefers to be the center of attention and will not share with other cats. Athena has quite an exotic coat, a mixture of tabby and tortoiseshell (tortie). This mixture is commonly known as “torbie.” Athena’s looks are so unique, she is like a tiny little masterpiece, waiting to be admired.

Winthrope is a very striking bull’s eye orange tabby. This rare pattern of tabby is circu-lar dark markings on a lighter background, as opposed to the more common striped mark-ings. Winthrope came in with his housemates after his owner passed away. Winthrope is taking his misfortune in stride, and was able to fit in among the cat room popu-lation almost at once. Winthrope could certainly live in a multi-cat household. He really loves people best, though, and loves to be petted. He just about turns himself inside-out in delight! He even likes belly rubs, which is fairly unusual for a cat. Come in and meet this affectionate, handsome lad.

Melody is a sweet girl, with shiny black fur and bright green eyes. She likes to be petted, and does not mind being picked up. She is taking her new situation in the shelter cautiously, but is neither shy nor demanding. Melody is so unassuming and undemanding, you might overlook her. But seek her out, and scoop her up - you’ll be glad you did! She seems to be the type of cat that will really blossom in a home environment, and neither be too needy, nor too shy, but just right! What more could you ask for, but this perfect Melody?

Jordan is the poster child for animals whose owners didn’t have a plan in place in case they passed away before their beloved pet. This little grey tabby was adopted from Animal Protectors as a kitten and her owner passed away recently, leaving her homeless. Lost and so confused, she was very shy and afraid at first, but has warmed up to volunteers very quickly. This young tabby girl would love a new home where she can feel the love her previous owner offered her every day, a love she misses so much.
This kitty is the total package! Playful, affectionate, cute-as-a-button, just over 1 year in age. She is a classic tuxedo cat, with golden eyes, and adorable white whiskers. Yesterday does not mind being picked up, will purr in your arms, and is tolerant of handling. She is loose in the shelter’s cat room, charming everyone who stops by to visit (especially loving people). Adopt this little mite today, and give her the home she longs for! Let’s help Yesterday forget her past and give her a bright tomorrow.
