Background

o Southeast Asia region is known as the world’s largest area of mangrove, extending over 6.8 million Ha, representing 34-42% of the world’s total (in 1980s)

o The largest areas of mangrove in SE Asia are found in Indonesia (4.2 million hectare, or almost 60% of SE Asia’s total).

o By 1990s mangrove forests are disappearing due to unsustainable utilization and habitat conversion until 15%.

o Several solutions to these problems have been adopted in member countries, such as restoration and rehabilitation.

o Establishing a united network for sharing the commendable practices and lessons learned.
