This down-to-earth title was the suggestion of theeditor, Edna Davis! Approaching us with refreshingcandor, Mrs. Davis said it was time some results wereaired, even if considered to be anecdotal by those withthe hang up of "Double 8lind Trial Syndrome".

We have tried to select across-section of diseases thus supporting ourcontentions that ascorbate, when used in the correctmannr -Ó, is indeed the most effective prophylactic andtherapeutic substance in the total hístorg of medicine.

'SPASTIC' CHILDFebruary 12,1981

Mother had premature baby at a hospital inVictoria (1 lb. 100z.). Put in humicrib andoxygenated ... baby then spastic and blinded.Kept in hospital for three months and thengiven an account for $18,000 and a"vegetable" to take home to die. She was toldbaby would only live for about two weeks.

Advised to put infant on sodium ascorbate,As there was nothing to lose Mrs, S. decided totry this. She commenced with half a teaspoonand now, 12 months later, the infant (yes,despite grim prognosis, stillliving!) is on aboutthree teaspoonfuls a day.

At age of about six months infant wasadmitted to Hospital for a viral disorder andthe vitamin C was withdrawn, it went downhillvery rapidly and Mrs. S. could not wait to get ithome and on the vitamin C again.

First, my grandfather this time last year wasin an intensive care unit with fluid on the lungsand struggling, after two previous heartattacks. giving of your precious time so freely duringthe two weeks my sister, Dorothy, was here inMelbourne for non-toxic cancer treatrnent.Thank you, too , for your expert and veryvalued advice.

As you know, Dorothy had a mastectomy(she doesn't think it was "radical") in Maythis year and has since been havingchemotherapy (CMF) with rather horrificresults.

Dorothy arrived in Melbourne looking sodrawn ... she was sick and depressed and toldme later that she was convinced she was goingto die. She was confused and exhausted. Infact, I hardly recognised her at the airport andcried myself to sleep that first night.

At first, each evening she was forced, bysheer exhaustion, to retire about 8 p.m., butgradually, after the sodium ascorbatetreatments intravenously (given at Dr. C'ssurgery) and other vitamin/mineralsupplements as advocated by you , she was ableto stay up later until one evening, after the firstweet.,.ik_~~ Jt".m..~e.mad.<:.d.1haLshe still felt bright at that hour, something

·which had not been possible since heroperation in May.

She told me that since her op. she hadcontinually suffered a lot of adverse reactionsfrom the chemotherapy ... the Iist is a milelong . . . and that she had to Iie down eachafternoon so that she'd be capable of getting theevening meal.

Each small household chore exhausted herand she had beco me very depressed. Thenerves in her arm were badly damagedsomewhere along the way.

The nerve specialist said in a letter it was a"mystery" and the surgeon claims it did nothappen in surgery. She has "brachial plexislesions" (? spelt) and has had daily visits froma physiotherapist since the operation.Although her arm is improving, she still haslimited use of it and is in some pain andextreme discomfort most of the time.

Dorothy left me last Saturday looking welland feeling very able to cope with her family ofthree children. She was not depressed, butrather looking forward to doing everything shefelt she could not handle before. Theimprovement was dramatic.

Information supplied by Dr. O1. Man, age 73.

Carcinoma of bile duct. At operation whitebile was found, a very bad signo

Inoperable Paliative cholecysto-duodenostomy done on September 16, 1977.Began to get attacks of liver failure when hereturned home. Given l. V. Na ascorbate, 8grams per day for six days then orally 15 gramsper day.

Despite his jaundice, remains remarkablywell. No more attacks of liver failure. Goodappetite, no pain, occasional pruritis only.2. Man , age 60.

Complained Iymphocytic Iymphoma withmacroglobul anaemia. Initially treated withcytotoxic drugs.

These were resumed on March 10, 1977because of deterioration in condition. Patient,however, has refused to take them and is onascorbate 20 to 25 grams per day andalphatocapherol 1 gram per day. J:le isc\inically remarkably well. Very mterestmg tonote that his se rum cholesterol is 75mgm%.His blood counts are satisfactory. However, hestill has a distinct gammaglobulin band onelectrophoresis.

CASE HISTORIESSupplied by Mrs. O. (Pharmacist)

August 16, 1978Mr. R. G., age 41, 4 children , had lump of

bowel removed January 1981. Nodes instomach and liver indicating secondaries.

Surgeon gave him six months to live.After the operation commenced sodium

ascorbate (lOg oral) plus Zn. Recent X-raysshowed no nodes.

Patient attended Det-Kal public meeting atMalvern Town Hall, says he feels perfectly welland further X-rays were c1ear. (Scan).

September 1978Patient: male, age 41 years. Operation

demonstrated cancer bowel with secondaries(January 26,1978).

Surgeon tells wife husband has six months totwo years left.

Patient commenced sodium ascorbate (10-12g per day) plus zinc, vitamin E and Myadec.

Five weeks after operation he was workingfour hours a day, four days a week. Threemonths after operation working 35 hours aweek. CurrentIy surgeon is pleased withprogress and advised the patient to continue thetreatment.

The patient has gained 10 Ib. in weight sincethe operation.

MISCELLANEOUS CANCERNote from Dr. E., July 25, 1978: "Please

supply sodium ascorbate for one of mypatients, a man aged 50 with a transitional cellCa of bladder, causing deep vein thrombosis ofthe right lower limb and much pain."

Follow-up Letter from Dr. ESeptember 17,1978

Dear Dr. Dettman,Thanks so much for your help with sodium

ascorbate. The patient with the transitional cellcarcinoma with pelvic mass DVT andIymphatic obstruction of right lower limb isholding his own - minimal pain and excellentspirits mostly. Another with massive metastaticliver from Ca breast had only seven infusionsbefore death, but seemed beautifully sereneand pain free.

Dear Glen,Some more thrills, a man with Iymphoma, in

agony, losing his pain on vitamin C, 30g I.V.bd, and being able to walk, eat and feel better.

A kid in agony sleeping better than he has formonths within 48 hours complete relief afterone injection repeated therefore every secondday. (A Burkitt's Iymphoma).

AIso acid phosphatase from Ca prostatedropping under vitamin C and the abnormalresults of a bladder cancer dropping backtowards normal, with increased energy.

Mordialloc meeting last July, I spoke to youabout the trauma we were having with ourdaughter who is "epileptic" when you advisedto put her on vitamins.

Natalie has been on 3 grams of vitamin C(Blackmores High Potency tablets as thepower was upsetting her), 1 gram of vitamen E(Gold Cross 500mg oil capsules), and three ofthe Formula 3 tablets (from your clinic) eachday, along with nine Epilim tablets (sodiumvalproate 200mg ea.).

Until we introduced the vitamins, none of thedrugs available were helping, but now she hasbeen c1ear of attacks since July 1980 (she wasaveraging at least one per month and, at badtimes, up to 15 attacks per day, particularlywhen on combinations of drugs).

Of course, we have no proof it's the vitaminsthat are helping, but it's quite a coincidence.AIso, Natalie was suffering from chronicattacks of infected throat and mouth ulcersevery month for over two years - they havealso cleared.

We're now seriously thinking of slowlydropping the dos age of Epilim tablets butguess we'lI have to consult with the specialistfirst - or will we? We haven't been back sincestarting the vitamins.

We're also considering sending thisinformation about the vitamins to the EpilepsyFoundation - do you think it would be of helpto other sufferers, or like many others, wouldthey be brain-washed into only being interestedin prescribing drugs - perhaps we should waitfor a longe r period of being "c1ear."

Two rniddle-aged ladies presented withperirbital shingles of three days' duration.Treated with oral ascorbic acid. Paindisappeared within three days and the rashneve r invaded the eye. Complete recovery intive days. Normally illness would have lastedsix weeks.

shingles. Complete case in three days withoutpain. Another patient present in same weekwith exactly the same type of shingles.However, she would not take vitamin C and isstill suffering considerable post herpetic pain.Her rash ran the full course over six weeks.

GLANDULARFEVERPresented October 11, 1977 with glandular

fever (proven by pathology) and severe"antibiotic mouth," treated with 5 grams ofNa ascorbate I.V., followed by oral ascorbicacid.

Remarkable improvement within hours ofinjection, to quote her mother, "you could seethe glands going down." However, completerecovery took about two weeks.

Impression I got was that daily I. V.ascorbate would probably have deared it up infive days at most.

* * *FLU VACCINE DAMAGE

Since I had my influenza injection last year,my health has gradually deteriorated.

I had arranged to go interstate seekingwarmer weather , as I felt so ill. My doctor hada blood test done and he advised me it wasalright.

On hearing of my condition, Glen Dettmantook a urine test and informed me that I wasbadly in need of "ascorbate" treatment, so Iagreed to accept his advice. Commencing withhalf a teaspoon at each meal for two weeks,then increasing it to a full teaspoon oncompletion of a month.

My condition slowly improved, no naggingstomachpains, bowels more regular, appetitegreatly improved and now able to do thechores around the house with no ill effects andalso I am regaining some of my lost weight. Ilive on my own.

This statement. is true in every respect andhas my full heartiest appreciation for thepowder named "ascorbate."

Dear Dr. Dettrnan,. You might remember me ringing you some

time in December concerning my sister-in-lawwho had been suffering from mentaldepression for the past two years, and I thinkDr. Wright rang you, too, concerning thiscase.

She wasn't very co-operative but she has andstill is taking the sodium ascorbate powder andthe B complex vitamins.

She is certainly the best she has ever been inthe last two years, so I feel we can safely saythat the mega vitamin therapy has really helpedin this case. She feels that it has helped her, too.

*CANCER and PAIN RELIEF

Between June 1977 and July 1979, 106terminal cancer patients were given, amongstother treatrnents, intravenous vitamin C in theform of sodium ascorbate diluted with normalsaline. Large doses were used, ranging from 15to 125 gram a day.

Subjective improvement of pain occurred innearly ali cases.

In 34 of these patients, 10 injections weregiven over a period of time. Ten days ofintravenous vitamin C was suggested as a fullcourse by the Scottish doctors whose workprecipitated the present tria!.

Ali appeared to have benefited, to varyingextents.

ALLERGIESI'm writing to let you know how thrilled we

are with Nicholas' recovery after the badexperience our 71/2 year old son has had forsome time from his allergy-excaserbated by hislast triple antigen injection.

On the Sunday my husband contacted you(1 p.m.). Nicholas was sneezing twice everyminute, rubbing his nose and was generallyfeeling quite miserable. I began yourrecommended vitamin therapy as soon as myhusband had finished conversation with you.

I had ali the vitamins on hand (as Bernardmy husband is himself on vitamin therapy),except for the zinc compound and comfreytablets, but I did have the alternative, freshpumpkin seeds.

By 7 o'clock I noticed subsiding sneezing (hehad been receiving by then half a teaspoon ofvitamin C every hour and had not yet haddiarrhoea). By the time Nicholas was due to goto bed at 8 p.m., I had made sure he'd reachedthe recommended dos age of ali vitamins I hadon hand.

He slept ali through the night withoutsneezing. We have both been absolutelyamazed and elated. There has not been anycontinual sneezing since the commencement ofthe vitamins.

Bernard and I are very grateful to you Dr.Dettman, especially after little hope had beenoffered by an allergy specialist the previousweek, apart from phenergan which I refused toput Nicholas on.

VETERINARY APPLICATIONSImportant as these help to exclude

psychosomatic responseI have been using sodium ascorbate 11M

regularly in anorectic cats, especially in felinecatarrah, with excellent results. The resultswith feline leukemia are outstanding.

I have also used it with great success incattle , especially to aid CNS stimulation in thedowner cow syndrome after milk fever.

During the last nine to 10 months, I haveused 25 grams of sodi~m ascorbate plusvitarmn B15 (10-15ml) SIX to eight hoursbefore a race with gallopers and trotters toobtain their maximum ability. The resultobtaíned in most cases are quite spectacular.

The place of arnniotic mernbrane in thetreatrnent of burns in childrenBy: - Nita Rahamut, Charge Nurse, Burns Unit, The Adelaide Children's Hospital (Inc.)

During the past four years we havemanaged sixty-six burnt patients withamniotic membrane at the AdelaideChildren's Hospital.

Our objectives in using amniotic membranewere:

I. To treat and or prevent shock.2. To minimise pain.3. To prevent or minimise growth of

bacteria in the burn wound andthroughout the body.

4. To promote healing with minimalscarring or loss of function.

5. To promote healing withoutcomplication or delay.

6. To minimise hospital stay.7. To prevent prolonged mental and

emotional stress.Amnion has been effective in helping us to

meet most of these objectives.Amnion Supplies

Placentas are collected from healthymothers and only those delivered by caesariansection. They are collected and preparedunder sterile conditions.Preparation

1. The membrane is separated from theplacenta.

2. It is then cut into smaller pieces.3. Rinsed in normal saline x four times.

Rinsed in 0.025 Sodium Hypochloride xfour times.Rinsed again in normal saline x fourtimes.

These rinses are done in separa te kidneydishes. It is then stored in normal salinc andpenicillin solution at 4"C until required.

So far we have had no problems with crossinfection, using arnnion. treated in this way.Selectionof patient

The selection of patient is determined by:1. The Clinic on take.

2. Surface area.3. Percentage of burn.4. Depth of burn.

ApplicationAfter L V. fluids have been established and

analgesia give n the patient is suitablypositioned and restrained when necessary.

The burnt area is cleansed, debribed andblotted of ali exudate.

Using forceps or gloved hands themembrane is applied to the burnt area,overlapping the edges. This stabilises themembrane and seals the burnt areacompletely. At this stage ali exudate isexpressed to prevent blistering and lifting ofthe membrane.

The area may be left open and driescompletely within two hours or wherenecessary it may be held in place with Jelonet,tampons and bandages. The younger patient iskept sedated for twenty four hours after whichdressings may be removed and no furthersedation is necessary.

It has been noted in the younger patient andcommented on by the older patient that thereis immediate pain relief after amnion has beenapplied. If conditions are satisfactory at homethe patient may be discharged, making twiceweekly visits for inspection.

As the burn heals the amnion lifts at theedges and parents are shown how to trim it.The superficial burn should be completelyhealed by 7th-10th day, requiring no furtherfollow-up.Appearance

With superficial burns the amnion retains aclear transparent appearance until separation.This allow easy inspection of the burn withoutdistress to the patient.

After separation the scar appears pale,without the usual florid discolourationassociated with burns treated with S.S.D.Cream. The skin is also smooth and supple and

shows less tendency to hypertropic scarring.With deeper burns the amnion appears thickerand more opaque and remains adherent.

Before grafting, this is then soaked off bybaths and wet dressings or is readily removedby the dermatone, at the time of grafting.

It should be noted that the use of amnioticmembrane plays a major part in reducingshock by:

1. Completely sealing off the burnt areaand stopping fluid loss.

2. Relieving pain by covering nerveendings.

3. Controlling body temperature.

Cost and workloadA cost and workload study was done after

six months trial period, comparing the use ofarnruon agamst silver sulpha diazine. Thisindicated it is cheaper in many ways to useammonc membrane.

The advantages of amnion are:1. A once only application, cutting down

the need for analgesic or sedation, afterapplication.

2. Reduces nursing staff workload. It takesone hour or less of nursing time toapply, depending on the skill of thenurse and the extent of the burn.
