Built in the 1830s, Oak Alley Plantation in Vacherie, Louisiana was home to over one hundred house and field slaves.

In 2011, Oak Alley Foundation’s Research and Collections Department embarked on a two-year effort to bring to light the history of Oak Alley’s enslaved community. How did they live? Were they families in the modern sense of the word? How were they treated? These were just a few of the many questions that had gone unanswered that needed to be addressed.

Today, the history of Oak Alley’s enslaved men, women, and children take the shape of a permanent exhibit, which is located on the historic grounds, almost exactly where the original community stood.

If you are interested in learning more about this part of Louisiana’s history, please join us at Ascension Parish Library – Galvez on Monday, February 16 at 6 PM.

Vince Yardas, Director of Research and Interpretation for the Oak Alley Foundation, and Laura Kilcer, Curator of Collections, will share their expertise on this topic. For more information about this program or to register, please call the library at 622-3339.

Did Beethoven's Sick Heart Set the Beat for His Music? From Discovery News A new way of analyzing some of Ludwig van Beethoven's most famous works reveals that his irregular heartbeat could have literally set the beat for them.

A cardiologist, a medical historian, and a musicologist took a close look at several of Beethoven’s compositions, including the final movement, “Cavatina,” in Beethoven’s String Quartet in B-flat Major, Opus 130, a stormy, emotional piece.

“His music may have been both figuratively and physically heartfelt,” said coauthor Joel Howell, a professor of internal medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School and member of the University of Michigan Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation, in a press release.

“When your heart beats irregularly from heart disease, it does so in some predictable patterns. We think we hear some of those same patterns in his music.” In the "Cavatina," the music suddenly becomes dark and sad, with an off rhythm that could mimic an irregular heartbeat. In the musicians' instructions with the piece, Beethoven says to play the section

"beklemmt," which means heavy hearted in German, said the researchers, though it also means anguished or pinched.

That “beklemmt” could mean sadness, but it could also convey the feeling Beethoven likely had of pressure around his heart.

“The arrhythmic quality of this section is unquestionable,” the researchers wrote in Perspectives in Biology and Medicine. The other team members were Zachary D. Goldberger, a cardiologist at Harborview Medical Center, University of Washington School of Medicine and Steven Whiting, a musicologist and Beethoven expert from the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance.

In other pieces the team studied, they also found arrhythmic patterns. Of course, it can never be proven that something Beethoven physically felt inside made its way into his music.

But, Howell said, “The synergy between our minds and our bodies shapes how we experience the world. This is especially apparent in the world of arts and music, which reflects so much of people’s innermost experiences.”

Valentine’s Day is one of many Western holidays which have been integrated into Japanese culture. Morozoff Ltd. first introduced the holiday to Japan in 1936, running an advertisement aimed at foreigners. ADULT FICTION:

Blue Labyrinth PRE Preston, Douglas J.

A long-buried family secret resurfaces when one of Aloysius Pendergast's most implacable enemies shows up on his doorstep as a murdered corpse. The mystery has all the hallmarks of the perfect murder, save for an enigmatic clue: a piece of turquoise lodged in the stomach of the

deceased. The gem leads Pendergast to an abandoned mine on the shore of California's desolate Salton Sea, which in turn propels him on a journey of discovery deep into his family's sinister past. But Pendergast learns there is more at work than a ghastly episode of family history: he is soon stalked by a subtle killer bent on

vengeance over an ancient transgression. In short order, Pendergast is caught in a wickedly clever plot, which will leave him stricken in mind and body...and may well end with his death.

Slow Dancing with a Stranger: Lost and Found in the Age of Alzheimer's 362.1968 COM Comer, Meryl

When Meryl Comer’s husband Harvey Gralnick was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease in 1996, she watched as the man who headed hematology and oncology research at the National Institutes of Health started to misplace important documents and forget clinical details that had once been cataloged encyclopedically in his mind. With harrowing honesty, she brings readers face to face with this devastating condition and its effects on its victims and those who care for them. Detailing the daily realities and overwhelming responsibilities of caregiving, Comer sheds intensive light on this national health crisis, using her personal experiences—the mistakes and the breakthroughs—to put a face to a misunderstood disease, while revealing the facts everyone needs to know.
