I N T R O D U C T I O NFrom many years of research, anecdotal evidence, observationand literature review, Ihave postulated four basic types of people.Iwill not argue here whether what Ihave suggested is caused bygenetics, child rearing, culture, luck, or trauma; all that I am con-cerned with here are the basic types, what Icall The Magician, TheEmperor, The Hermit and The Universe.Keep in mind that simply because a person is a particular typedoesn't mean that under unusual or stressful sltuatlons they willnot demonstrate some of the behavior of another type. There is nothing new about types-Jung had his, Sheldon had his, and, of course, there isthe work of Eysenck, Maslow and others-and there are numerous popular books describing temperaments. However, my interest ,is not in simple pathology-astro-types,genetic types or archetypes pel' se=-but, rather, in the Extremetype: the future man which Ioften call The Psychopath-or some-times have referred to as The Newman, or Superman ......

A ,B I T O F B A C KG R O UN DRats, Rats, Rats, and More RatsA Rodent's Life-Renfie/d's AccountIn my'laboratory research utilizing lower animals, using sensorydeprivation and pain, I found a number of interesting patterns.(These ra,tswere from the same strain, keeping genetic differen, cesto a rrilnlmiim.)The variables I manipulated were: deprivation of stimuli, theemployment cf electroshock, and food.It was interesting to see that some animals became so hungry forstimuli that they would shock themselves even if food were notcontingent on their pressing the famed "Skinner-Bar."Under certain conditions the animals were aroused and exploredtheir environment-they seemed to be having fun.Under different circumstances these same animals were arousedbut nervous-they were on guar~, bored, nat having fun ......I noticed two other conditions as well. Some animals were tiredbut tense-they had a hard time relaxing and were agitated. An~,finally, there were some animals that were peacefully relaxed. In another major study on conflict, my colleagues and Ifound thatthe spatial factors (cubic area) where the conflict was conditioned, permanently a:ffected how the conditioned "neurosis" expresseditself. Primarily, the animals were either quiet and tense, or theywere tense and hyperactive. Being anthropomorphic, we privatelycalled what we created "depressive rats" and "manic rats." (Wedidn't use these terms in the published articles, but instead usedsymbols to represent the process of learning to be "crazy,")

8 The Psychopath's NotebookI also noticed that some animals were prone to these variousstates at different times of the daYI indicating an interactionbetween cycles and conflict. These studies were published in peer-reviewed [ournals; thereforeIwas not free to spf!culate on my private observations or on othertentative observations as these were serendipitous observationsadjunctive to the more specific purposes ofthese studies,., , .In private I speculated that these animals exhibited four extremestates of activity and, though there were four basic types, thevarious types actua.lly existed on two continua (energy level andterision) ...... much Ii~e an equal-armed cross. .

IThe published studies were significant enough to warrant a fullfellowship to study at either of two majo_r foreign (none USA)universities under the directorship of world-recognized expertson arousal, conflict and cognition.TheHuman Side of Things

Just in case you think that Iam inappro'priately generalizing fromrats to humans, Iwill tell you two stories. When Iwas doing an Internship_ at a State Hospital in California forthe Mentally Impaired, I found that. certain types of brain-dam-aged patients could tolerate and even enjQYan array of complexstimuli ,while others would find the same stimuli stressful. Whilenot !>cientific, or in any way conclusive, it did remind me of myearlier tat research.Jumping ahead a few years, as a psychotherapist I found someinteres_ting types of patients:What I bave come to call the High-Tension, Low-Energy Type (orThe Hermit) was sort of placid, often thin but could be overweight;they frequently exhibited the famous limp handshake; seme evenhad sweaty palms. (In passing, the other day I met a very intelli-gent ph-ysician who, when Ishook his hand, felt as if his hand werenot connected to the rest of his body.)These individuals reported that they were often tense and tiredwhen trying to sleep. In doing some testing using a number ofego-strength scales, 1 found that these people had lower ego-

Genesis 9strength than the High-Energy, High-Tension -petlents=-TheEmperor.Using a number of self-rating scales on self-esteem, I found TheHermit to have lower reported self-esteem than the Emperor ......In addition, the Hermlttended to repo'rt more eccentric or bizarrelife experiences. And while both groups lied ...... the Emperorshowed more extremes in their lying score-they either almostalways lied or almost never lied. The High-Tension, High-~nergy people (The Emp,eror) were mereovertl,}"aggre$sive-~nd in some cases could be made to fly offthe handle rather easily .... .. They abo liked their alcohol .. ... .On the other hand, The Hermit was verbally hostile, sarcastic,passive-a'g,$J'ressrve,and a saboteur. The third type Icalled the normal average person (Jhe Universe):rather low ef1,ergyand moderate tension. They were the averijlgeman on the street who, in some cases, were very intelligent andheld high-paying positions-but ln essence were average both intheir interests and their problems. Finally, the fourth typ.e (The Magician) has high energy and lowtension. As a psychotherapist Irarely saw this type .... .. in fact Icanonly remember one, and that was because he was extracting him-self from a rather hysteri(;al but highly attractive wife, and neededmy assistance to get her off his back. I have met types like, these inother contexts, some operatln'g as high-level business owners;others were adventurers; and still others as leaders.I would call these individuals both rare and healthy specimens-reflecting possibly some of the types to emerge throug'h evolutiooandlor genetie A"Ianipuliltion.lam defininghealth and lllness.ln this context as:Health relates to specific reactions to contextual situations withminimal effect to the deeper identity and general esteem struc-tures which are strong and vigorous .. .Illness refers to lower order reactions to contextual sltuatlons withmoderate to maximal effect to the deeper identity and este.emstructures which tend to be weak or fragile .

Besure to include their type from the list above.Butfirst, take Revenge on Yourself. You are the EnemylMake a list of the crimes you have committed against y~urself. Now beat the hell out of yourself-do a good job-this is the lasttime you will be allowed to be a louse to yourself.

Thought of the DayThe most important thing you can do on Psychopath's Sun'day isto dig up another belief and burn it alive. When you have no beliefs, you will have no more unpleasantthoughts. Of course, that means you won't have any pleasant oneseither-

    40 The Psychopath's NotebookLUST

Lust is blind, use it wisely.God Is Lustful-he wants everything. There are no limits to hislust. Look---he murdered his own Son and, called it a sacrifice-frankly he didn't trust him. "Trust not thee who lusts after power."Does God trust you? Sure he does ..... .Lust is possession-a weakness in self . ..... in essence, lust is notreal pleasure, but a failed attempt to rid oneself of pain. Lust is acreated by deprivation, guilt and self contempt ...... no one is bornguilty, but made so by those whose own anxieties have created afalse sense of order with prohibitions and restrlctlons. Are youfollowing in their footsteps-by polluting your brain?Lustful behavior is often degrad[,ng and dehumanizing, hencestress lust in those you want to suffer.More often than not, lustful actions lead to guilt and self-depreca-tion ...... It is wise to encourage lust in those you wish to have anedge over.Shame is the companion of lust. Individuals who lust after posses-sions, sex or love bring shame-and "shame is not of wisdom."Frequently they will trip themselves up in some important way asthe Wisdom of shame is to inflict pain. .Shame, guilt and pain is the ultimate game. Ever try to win with amasochist? Their only card Isthelr own demise. Remember, theonly power a chi'ld had in combating a sadistic parent was its ownpain and death. And this is what mankind has done with it~ ,God.

GLUTTONYGluttony is an ideal form of killing yourself- deadening the mindand making you weak ... This is the purpose-constipation of thebrain .. .... Food is but one example, but mos~ people are gluttonsin most eVli!rything they undertake-nothing is ever enough forthem .. . Urge your enemies on, provide them wit.h new and betteraddictions ... help them expend their resources on nonsense,'showing off their pain to the cro,wd... PRIDEGod is prideful-he loves compliments., worship and gets it.

Genesis 43Doy~u7Give them.compliments.Make them more dependent on you."When Pride Cometh, then cometh shame."Pride-sometimes known as self-esteem-is rega:rded psycholog-icallyas.a positive and essential characteristic of mental health ...On the other hand/think-ing you are better than others lsnot, norIs co"ceit. .As a deadly sin, pride contains something more subtle: the simplepride. inyourself as human. For withinth-is thought there is a greatdanger: disre.gard for god-as-creator, the one who is responsiblefor all and owns Jilan I t i nd, hismost noble creation ... Thus, prideInthis sense is something akin to self-worship disregariing god asthe sele and complete cause of everything. It ignores the premisethat man owes everything tagod. But man also owns his gods. What a shame.Regardless of what most people might say, Freud and othersrecognized a primary narcissism in all human beings. In otherwords, a self-love or self-wcrshlp that precedes the so-celledGarden of Eden myth. Man wanted to be like g'od and aidn't wantto be' dependent ... This is the essenceef the fall . ..... as god pre-v~mtsman from eating from the tree of life, "Ies't they become likeone of us," immortal ...... The tree of knowledge gave man thepower of knowing, but the tree of life would place man completelyout of god's controL. Only god is allowed complete pride as ere-ator,not man.Helping others to harm themselves with pride is simple: just helpthem, take pleasure in their pride. Com,pliment them, assure themthat tbey are acting too humbly for their own best interest, Helpthem to show off. Reinforce theif i",.nate belief that they arebeyond destructlen. Suggest that they take rlsks-e-chartces whichhave a real element ofd-anger.
