Pastor’s Notes

Next weekend I will be celebrating my 40th anniversary as a priest. Joining me will be a good deal of my family from Rhode Island. They will be arriving around noon on Friday and staying until sometime Monday. We will be housing them in the rectories of Good Shepherd and Crucifixion parishes. So if you see women, men, and adult children moving in and out of our rectories know that there is no reason for concern. On Monday, April 25 Father Alexandre Jacques-Rony, pastor of Saint Laurant parish in Haiti, sent an email of thanks to Gail Grady. Some of the email read: “… I humbly offer my gratitude before you and all the donors of the Catholic Church of Glen Burnie … all the children, young adults, and adults of your parish. I want to thank them wholeheartedly. As I mentioned last week, Archbishop Lori will be making a pastoral visit to our community on the weekend of June 25 and 26. He will be celebrating a Mass at each of our three parishes, followed by a light reception in our halls and meet-and-greet of our parishioners. I hope to get him to come back one Sunday next school year to celebrate with our Spanish speaking community at 7:30 am (our largest Mass) and our High School Youth and Young Adults at 10:30 am. While the times and destinations have not been finalized I will propose that he celebrate the 5:30 p.m. Mass at Good Shepherd on Saturday, June 25 and the 8:30 a.m. Mass at Holy Trinity, and the 11 a.m. Mass at Crucifixion on Sunday, June 26. This will give him ample time to celebrate Mass and meet parishioners afterwards. Continuing with the Holy Father’s post-synodal Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia (The Joy of Love), we look at Chapter Three: “Looking to Jesus: The vocation of the Family” (58-88). Above all, this chapter stresses the themes of indissolubility, the sacramental nature of marriage, the transmission of life and the education of children. The chapter provides a broad view and touches on “imperfect situations” as well … the reflection also includes the “wounded families” about whom the Pope says that “it is always necessary to recall this general principle: ‘Pastors must know that, for the sake of the truth, they are obliged to exercise careful discernment of situations’ … the degree of responsibility is not equal in all cases and factors may exist which limit the ability to make a decision. Therefore, while clearly citing the Church’s teaching, pastors are to avoid judgments that do not take into account the complexity of various situations, and they are to be attentive, by necessity, to how people experience and endure distress because of their condition” (AL 79). On Monday, April 25, I shared with our Pastoral Council the Archdiocesan reports on the survey you completed

before Christmas. The Council’s study of the reports will take some time. We decided to study Good Shepherd’s report first as if it was our parish (not just those who are registered and worship there). We will do the same with our other two parishes. For the time being we will read the comprehensive report and then discuss it at our next meeting on May 24. Fr. Vin is thinking of pulling together some folks he knows to discuss these reports as well. Perhaps if I have to pull together the staff and Pastoral Council he could do likewise with a group of interested parishioners. So if you are interested, please contact him. Memorial Day, May 30, will be here before we know it and I remind you that on the major holidays we have one cluster Mass at 8:30 am at Holy Trinity. This is just a heads up for those who usually attend the 6:30 AM & PM Masses.

If you would like to be anointed before entering the hospital or for any other reason, ask the priest before or after Mass and he will be glad to offer you the sacrament. If you would like the community gathered to pray for you, I would be happy to anoint you after communion. My contact info: My email address is [email protected] and my cell number is 410-299-6731. Remember God loves you and so do I. Make it a good week! Fr. Lou

Father Lou’s 40th Anniversary Celebration

A lifetime of loving, caring, shepherding, and faith is being celebrated in honor of Father Lou Martin as we rejoice in his 40th anniversary as a priest. Please join us on Sunday, May 15 at 4 p.m. at St. Philip Neri Church for Mass with reception to follow. Anyone interested in assisting the committee with preparation may please contact Sean Smith at [email protected] or 410-935-4827. If you are anticipating a gift to Fr. Lou, please consider joining with your fellow parishioners in giving cash to him to help with his summer vacation plans.

Total Discipleship Communications Survey First of all, the committee would like to thank all those who participated in the survey. We’re still tabulating the results but we would like to give you some preliminary findings. The majority of our parishioners read the Sunday bulletin and find it a useful means of getting information about Church events. Our website, on the other hand, is seldom

EVENTS & GENERAL INFORMATION

Saint Vincent de Paul Today as we celebrate the feast of the Ascension we are reminded that Christ’s saving work on earth continues through his disciples… and now through us. Please see one of our members, or email us at [email protected] to learn how you can help.

Holy Spirit Novena - May 5 to May 13, 2016 Theme: Experiencing the Holy Spirit

What does it mean to experience the Holy Spirit? In what way does the Holy Spirit make His presence known in our lives? How can we experience power and healing in our world today? Come join us in reflecting on these questions at this year's Holy Spirit Novena. We will meet each night from May 5 - May 13 from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. at Church of the Crucifixion. This is a wonderful time for praise, prayer, adoration, and strengthening of faith. Together, let us to join Mary and the Apostles in the Upper Room as we await the Presence of the Holy Spirit. The last night is a healing service. Bring a friend! Attend as much as you can!

Knights of Columbus & CC-GB Blood Drive The Knights of Columbus Council 7025 and the Catholic Church of Glen Burnie have planned a Blood Drive at the Holy Trinity Hall on Sunday, May 22. The Red Cross will be at the Hall from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Breakfast/Brunch will be served for those who donate blood. One blood donation saves on average 3 lives. The need is constant. The gratification is instant! GIVE BLOOD!

First Friday Adoration at Holy Trinity Eucharistic Adoration is held on the 1st Friday of each month at Holy Trinity Church. Come pray for all Vocations found within our Church – Sacramental Married Life, Holy Single Life, Priesthood, or Religious Life. This is a wonderful opportunity to pray our path as well as for those we hold dear. Our Lord cannot be left alone! The Eucharist is the heart of the Church, our nourishment. It is central to this devotion that one or more Eucharistic adorers be present until the Blessed Sacrament has reposed at 6:30 p.m. Enjoy your time with Jesus, ever present in the Eucharist, while you show your appreciation and love for Him. Prayer sheets are available or bring your own. Your commitment to signing up and following through on your commitment is critically important. Please take a moment to register your time on the sign-up sheet in the Church narthex. Jesus will be present – will you join him?

Wednesday Adoration at Crucifixion Wednesday Adoration Topic

Wednesday Adoration is cancelled on May 11 and in its place will be the Holy Spirit Novena. Please plan to attend the novena. The regular Wednesday Adoration will resume on May 18 with the continuation of our meditations on the Mysteries of the Rosary. All sacraments and devotions in the Church find their purpose and ultimate end in the heart of God, in entering more deeply into a relationship with Him. On May 18, we will present reflections on the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary, considering how God is speaking to us through His Incarnation and childhood. Please join us at the Church of the Crucifixion from 7:00-8:00 pm.

Wednesday Adoration at Good Shepherd Adoration is held each Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Good Shepherd's Chapel of the Angels. The chapel is also open for daily prayer in the presence of the Lord Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Two of our newest saints provide us encouragement for this most beneficial devotion: “Jesus Himself is calling you to spend one special specific hour with Him each week.” (Pope St. John Paul II); “There is no doubt that a flood of graces will descend upon your family and the world if more souls would become docile pupils of adoration.” (Pope St. John XXIII). Call Mary at 410-207-5188 for information.

Mary, we pray today for all mothers who are afraid to be mothers. We pray for those who feel threatened and overwhelmed by their pregnancy. Intercede for them, that God may give them the grace to say yes and the courage to go on. May they have the grace to reject the false solution of abortion. May they say to you, “Be it done unto me according to your word”. May they experience the help of Christian people and know the peace that comes from doing God’s will. Amen.

Memorial Mass for Parents Who Have Lost a Child

We warmly invite you to a Memorial Mass for parents & family members who have lost a child at St. Michael Catholic Church, 1125 St. Michael Rd., Mt. Airy, MD on Wednesday, May 18 at 7:30 p.m. There will be an opportunity afterward for individual prayer & for sharing either by reaching out for grace and strength from others or to give the gift of your strength & faith through your own experiences to those in need that evening. Parents & families experience the loss of a child in many ways; a child in the womb, from illness, from violence, from suicide, from war, from accidents, from natural causes. We can lose our children in other equally painful ways such as a child suffering with addictions, a child who has abandoned their faith, an estranged child. Loss is experienced in many ways and on many levels. Our community wishes to hold our arms out to those suffering these losses and wrap them in the warmth of our prayers, understanding and compassion, and in the loving embrace of Our Lord through the Mass.
