The word Asavas means the preparation that helps to extract the active components. Arista means the properties of a drug that enables it to remainwithout decaying and losing its effect for a long time. Asavas and arishtas are liquid preparations. They are alcoholic solutions containing all the activeingredients of the drugs of which they care compounded. Thus they contain water soluble as well as alcohol soluble substances of the drugs. Theydiffer from the official sprits which are merely alcoholic solutions of essential oils.
Asava and arishtas differ from each other owing to their difference in method of preparation. Asavas are preparations which are subjected tofermentation for an allotted period with all its specific ingredients mixed with certain quantity of water, while arishtas are preparations which aresubjected to fermentation for a specific time after boiling the main decoction substance and the adding other ingredients.Asavas and arishtas are prepared from fruits, roots, extracts, roots, leaves and barks that is they are fully herbal preparations. The jaggary sugar orhoney with water are the other ingredients. Besides these, different types of plants and their components are added at the end of preparation so thatthey can help the medicine to be more effective and to reduce its alcoholic effects.

AbhayarishtaCarminative and appetizer. Indicated in piles, anemia, colitis, cardiac, lesions, spleen and other intestinaldisorders, Also removes constipation.
ArjunaristhaTonic and cardiac stimulant. used in diseases of heart and respiratory disorders.
Ashokarishta Alterative, stimulant and astringent. Used in leucorrhoea, haematuria, menorrhagia and other female complaints
BalarishtaAntirheumatic and diuretic. Indicated in hemiplegia,rheumatic pains.
ChandanasavaDiuretic,nd urinary antiseptic .Used in gonorrhoea,spermatorrhoea and other urinary diseases.
DashmoolarishtaBitter tonic,Alterative and stimulant, Useful in cough,menonervous diseases, consumption, anemia, jaundice, piles and as a parental tonic.
DrakshavaStimulant antipyretic, diuretic, it is invigorating and nourishing. Used in phthisis, insomnia, loss of appetite cough, general debility and premature sanity.
KalmeghasavaExpectorant, Laxative, stimulant. Used in chronic respiratory disorder, flatulence and other disease of alimentary system.
KumariasavaAlterative tonic and haematinic. Used in anemia, enlargement of the liver, endocrinal, deficiency, tympanites, cough,asthma and constipation.
Kutajarishta Astringent, stimulant, and antiperiodic. Used in dysentery, diarrhea, fever and sprue.
Punarnavarishta Diuretic, alterative and haematinic Indicated in beriberi, Edema, abdominal disorders and liver complains
Vidangasava Carminative, anthelmintic. Used in paralysis, Paraplegia, lock jaw and in destroying worms.
