Did you know that in 2016 our Aussie athletes set 4 world records with another pending? Did you know that in 2016 our athletes set 128 Australian Records? Did you know that those record achievers came from the 30-34 age group through to the 90-94 age group?

You already know that there were approximately 1400 Aussie athletes who competed in Perth at the WMA Championships You can now correctly deduce that the quality of the nominees for the AMA Awards, which will be presented at the dinner function during the AMA Darwin Championships, is very, very high. Eleven awards for eleven recipients! The list of nominees for these awards can be perused on the AMA website. The AMA Awards were first presented in 1999 so this is the 19th presentation. Our world body, WMA has an annual award for the best male and female athlete and these were first presented in 2004. Incredibly, Australian athletes have won more of these awards than any other country with eight of the twenty six presented. I am proud to say that the Australian WMA Best Athletes all competed in Perth and all maintained their high standards and won medals. Need a trip to Japan? Whilst at the WMA Daegu Indoors I received an invitation from Japan inviting Australian athletes to compete in the Japan Masters Athletics Championships. Dates are Friday 27th- Sunday 29th October 2017 with an opening ceremony and party on the evening of the 26th. The Championships to be held at Kimiidera Park Athletics Field, Wakayama. Check website for details or email: mailto:[email protected] What tremendous results for the Aussie team in Daegu at the Indoor Championships. The entire team can be very proud of their achievements and to finish on top of the medal tally is a remarkable achievement. Daegu City and the LOC put on a great WMA championship from a great opening through to the closing ceremony. Our championships in Darwin, the first time in the Northern Territory, will become a very special part of AMA history. Best wishes to athletes taking part and may each enjoy the competition and their time in and around Darwin.

Australian athletes have returned from the recent World Masters Indoor Athletics Championships held in Daegu, South Korea on top of the medal tally. · For the first time at world indoors and most likely at any away competition, Australia topped the medal tally (59 gold, 40 silver, 25 bronze) despite having a slightly smaller team than our nearest rivals – Great Britain and USA. · 84 Australians entered, 76 arrived and 73 competed. The women out-numbered the men 37-36! · Our oldest team member was Jim Sinclair (M90) and our youngest was

Shanell Staunton (W35) – both won gold medals · There were 38 team members competing at a WMA indoor event for the first time.

· Team members set three world records and 105 national records.

Highlights included:

Heather Carr won gold in world record time in the first event of the championships – the W65 3000m Race Walk in 16mins 57.96. Heather also won gold in the 10km road walk and teamed up with Joan Purcell and

Lynne Schickert for gold in the W65 road walk teams event.

Lavinia Petrie competing in her first indoor competition by-passed the out of stadia events to be able to run indoors! She set a new world mark of 12minutes 54.89 in the W70 3000m. Lavinia also won gold in the 800m, 1500m and the W70 4x200m relay along with Noreen Parrish, Fran Harris and Jean Hampson.

Jenny Flynn waited till the last day to set a new world record of 1:10.34 in the W65 400m. She also won gold in the 800m and was part of the gold medal W65 4x200m team with Lyn Peake, Wilma Perkins and

Paula Moorhouse.

First time athletes to an indoor competition, Janelle Delaney (W45) and Jay Stone (M35) won their respective 200-400m doubles, while Julie Brims (W50) won the 60-200m double. For Brims and Stone,

their times lowered the Australian records.

For me, it was my fifth time competing at the World Masters Indoor Athletics Championships and fourth time as the Australian Team Manager so it was a tremendous honour to carry the Australian flag at the Opening Ceremony. I always find it exciting to compete indoors as the atmosphere is very loud and the

action close. It is very different to being in a big outdoor stadium. The closeness of everything adds to the intensity.

Andrew Jamieson of Australia and Irene Obera of the USA are shown with WMA President Stan Perkins (centre)

The Mayor and City of Daegu hosted a VIP Reception to honor World Masters Athletics and all the athletes attending the 2017 Indoor championships in Daegu. Each affiliate was invited to have two representatives attend and there was a large group of business and government people in attendance.

The night featured great entertainment, excellent food and an opportunity for WMA to present the Athlete of the Year Awards to Andrew Jamieson of Australia and Irene Obera of the USA. The City was very proud to have the Awards as part of this function. Both Andrew and Irene are great ambassadors for our Masters Athletics sport and were very busy after the ceremony with many athletes from around the world seeking a photo or more and an opportunity to congratulate both athletes for their outstanding achievements. This was the first time Irene won the award whereas Andrew previously won this award in 2007.

Report Stan Perkins 5th April 2017

Congratulations Lavinia Petrie on your Edwin Flack 2015 award Two Victorian athletes with diverse careers in the sport have been named by Athletics Australia as the recipients of its prestigious Edwin Flack Award for 2015 and 2016 respectively. The Award acknowledges distinguished service to the sport by athletes only. Named in honour of this country’s first ever Olympian and gold medalist, just one award is made in respect of each year.

Whilst distance runner Lavinia Petrie (2015) and thrower Russell Short (2016) may compete in quite different disciplines, both of their careers are marked with extraordinary longevity. Not long after her arrival in Australia in 1966, Lavinia became a trailblazer for women’s distance running – among the first women in the world to run as far as ten miles and then the marathon. Lavinia was national cross country champion in 1993 and was women’s captain of the first Australian team to compete in a World Cross Country Championships – in Morocco in 1975. Never one for avoiding a challenge she again represented her country 18 years later in the 100km World Challenge. But that was of course far from it for this amazing athlete. She is now one of the most successful masters’ athletes in the World. In 2014 she was recognised by the IAAF as the World’s best Female Masters Athlete. In recent times she has re-written the masters’ world record book in the 70-74 age group, adding to the three records she holds in younger age groups. Lavinia is passionate about athletics and the people involved in the sport. Not only has she been an outstanding competitor for over fifty years, she has also been an active and much respected mentor, coach, official, manager and administrator for Ringwood AC, Athletics Victoria and Victorian Masters.
