AS LEVEL FINE ART Course Outline The aim of the AS Level Fine Art course is for you to learn and develop as an individual artist, discovering new knowledge about artists, art movements, art materials and techniques. You will explore drawing skills, life drawing, painting, print making, ceramics, sculpture and photography. You will be using digital imagery and a full range of art materials. The course will take on a global perspective and study artists and art movements and cultures from Pre-history through to Post-modernism. The Art Department arranges visits to exhibitions, galleries and art museums throughout the course, to places like: Paris, Amsterdam, London, Norwich and Cambridge etc. The AS Level course will require you to produce two good quality sketchbooks, supporting studies and two final pieces of work. Throughout the course you will be continuously assessed, you will be given regular updates on your progress.

• The aim of the AS Level Fine Art course is for you to learn and develop as an individual artist, discovering new knowledge about artists, art movements, art materials and techniques.

• Component 2: Externally Set Assignment (50%)• Externally set, broad-based theme released to teachers and students on 1 January.• Sustained focus period of 10 hours' controlled assessment in which students create final

Materials

• To complete the AS level Art course this year you will be required to purchase a materials pack, you may choose between an A3 Sketchbook pack and an A2 sketchbook pack:

• A3 Sketchbook Pack at £23.00 includes: A3 sketchbooks x3 and Canvas or MDF x2

• A2 Sketchbook Pack at £26.00 includes: A2 Sketchbook x2 Canvas or MDF x2

• This is a good deal and we recommend you take this opportunity to purchase all these items in one payment at the beginning of the course in September. • The Art Department will provide you with the basic art materials required throughout the course but it is strongly recommended that you bring in your own art materials and acquire some good resources to use on independent tasks at home.

SUMMER HOMEWORK

SUMMER HOLIDAY TASKS• During the summer holiday you will be required to produce some significant work (5 tasks) these will be the start of your

Personal Investigation. This work should be of a high standard, well-presented and use a wide range of art materials and techniques. Remember this work will form part of your assessment for your AS Level, so make sure that you do your very best!

• All tasks should be on A3 (good quality) paper.

• Task 1:

• Make an A3 page of research on one of following artists. When making your choice also consider its genre (Portrait, Landscape or Still-Life)

• Include: title, written research in your own words, two images (reproductions) no smaller than A5 of the artist’s work.

• Portrait:• Hanjo Schmidt, Andrew Salgado, Russell Mills, Agnes Cecile, Françoise Nielly, Jenny Saville

• Landscape:• Kurt Jackson, Anselm Kiefer, Peter Doig, Angie Lewin, Rosie Snell, Theresé Oulton

• Still Life:• Janet Fish, Audrey Flack, Lisa Milroy, Patrick Caulfield, Wayne Thiebaud, Euan Uglow

• Task 2:

• Make an accurate copy of one of the works from your chosen artist.

• This should fill an A3 page and be a faithful reproduction paying close attention to colour, tonality and brush strokes etc...

• Task 3:

• Take a series of 10 photographs related to the artist you have chosen, make these in direct response to the subject matter, composition and style of the artist's work. Develop some of your images using photo-manipulation software if you wish.

• Task 4:

• Make two A3 direct observational drawings related to your chosen artist in the genre that you have selected (Portrait, Landscape or Still-Life). Use one of the following art materials for each drawing: e.g.: Tonal Drawing in soft pencil (4B/6B), Watercolour Pencil, Watercolours, Acrylic, Cross Hatching in Black Biro, Charcoal, Chalk or Oil Pastel – please do not use Felt-Tipped Pens!

Task 5:Annotate all your work with individual/personal descriptions. Extend your vocabulary in both aesthetic and technical terms.

This work should be completed and brought in with you on your first Art Lesson in September.

The course is about you as an individual and for you to enjoy. We want you to be passionate, committed and focused on learning to develop into an imaginative, creative artist.
