As I enter the classroom, the class is in the middle of reading a passage in their text book.

The topic for the lesson is Lets Go Shopping. It is an urban year 1 classroom which their level of

proficiency can be considered as good. The teacher is using a text book for teaching materials. The

focused language skill is reading. The duration of the lesson is one hour.

Firstly, the teacher guides the students reading the passage. While reading, the teacherhelps them with new vocabulary items. She stops reading and asks the students the meaning of belt,

fish and chips. Some students answer it wrong and a few answer it correctly. After that, she tells the

students the correct answers. Then she continues the reading. When they have finished reading the

passage, she asks them to read it again but this time without her guidance. While the students are

reading the passage, sometimes she ask them to stop and she corrects some of the pronunciations

error made by the students. The common error made by them is the pronunciation of Saturday.

Later, she tells them the correct pronunciation of Saturday.

Next, she asks them who wants to volunteer to read the passage loud and clear individually.

One of the boys raises his hand as a sign that he volunteers to read. He read it loud and clear and

after he has finished reading, some other students also volunteer to read. After the students havefinished reading, the teacher asks them in English if they have any questions. One boy raises his

hand and says, What is handbag? the teacher replies, a bag usually used by women. Then she

continues in English to explain how does it usually looks and describes the one that is mentioned in

the passage. Another student says lunchitu apa? The teacher translates makan tengah hari.

Since the students have no more questions, the teacher ask them where they like to go

shopping. They come out with many answer which all of them are make sense, means that they

understood the question. Then the teacher asks them to write the answers which appear at the end

of the passage. The questions are in English, and the students are instructed to write the answers in

English as well. In addition to questions that ask for information contained within the reading

passage, the students answer to more questions. For the first one, they have to make inference

based on their understanding of the passage. For example, Do u think they like shopping? another

one requires them to relate the passage to their experience. For example, Have u ever go shopping

with your family? If yes, where are you always go shopping?

After 20 minutes, the teacher, speaking in Malay language, asks the student to stop and

check their work. One by one, each student read a question and then reads his or her response. If

the answer is correct, the teacher call on another student to read the next question. If the answer is

not correct, the teacher call on other students to give the correct answer, or the teacher herself

gives the right answer. That the end of the lesson.
